Some more updates for everyone regarding USS The Sullivans.
I'll be adding to the description a little of her history every update.
She's part of the Fighting Fletchers, and was attached to DesRon 52 in World War II - along with USS Owen, USS Miller, USS Stephen Potter and USS Tingey. You may see the dice on the aft stack...and it reads five and two. Many people think it's for "Lucky Seven", but it does represent Destroyer Squadron 52.
Shane is trying to get to as many comments as humanly possible, so please leave questions and comments!
Thank you again for all your support!

Very, VERY, glad to see the efforts to refloat and right The Sullivans. This vessel has a special place in my heart. For 5-days back in March 1945, this vessel escorted and protected fellow Fletcher destroyer, USS Halsey Powell (DD-686). The Halsey Powell was struck by a Kamikaze on 20 March 1945 in the vicinity of Japan. She was badly damaged with a large hole below the waterline and her rudder jammed full left, leaving her only able to steam in circles. Twelve of the crew were dead or missing. The USS The Sullivans was ordered to accompany and assist DD-686 in any way she could. With the Halsey Powell unable to maneuver it was not long before the two Fletchers were all alone as the American Naval Fleet disappeared over the horizon. The crew of the Halsey Powell freed the jammed rudder, but it remained inoperative. This allowed the ship to steam in one general direction using engines to steer. The two destroyers slowly made their way away from Japan toward Ulithi. The journey was slow. For the next two days the duo came under Japanese air attacks. Were it not for The Sullivans, the Halsey Powell would certainly now be on the floor of the Pacific. Thankfully, by the 3rd day the two ships were beyond the reach of Japanese airplanes. The weather remained good and on day-5 they entered the lagoon at Ulithi. The Sullivans brought the USS Halsey Powell back safe. You see, the Halsey Powell was the ship that my father served aboard during WWII.

I am happy to hear that the memorial compartment never flooded and the artifacts are safe and secure. That is a blessing given all that has happened. I am also glad to hear that you are thinking of this with a silver lining as well, having mentioned that this is also an opportunity to restore things to a more original state when and where appropriate and possible. I think keeping the eye on the brighter future with all the possibilities is a much needed thing when going through any serious incident.

Lack of hard work, planning, and the ability to recognize and respond to a known threat is what caused the current condition. Posting little hearts and empty videos online is not "hard work". No one from the organization is even permitted onboard because they have nothing to contribute and would be a hazard to themselves and the salvage work. If you feel compelled to thank someone, thank the salvage company workers who are performing a difficult, dangerous and dirty job that never should have been required.

@stephencox4224
@stephencox4224 Год назад
Just like loading or unloading an Oil tanker you cannot simply pump out one section but have to do it piecemeal across all sections or risk serious if not fatal damage to the structure otherwise the stress incurred during salvage can irreparably damage the hull structure so things are not as simple as simply pumping the water out you have to do it in a controlled manner. Few realise that incorrect loading or unloading of tankers can literally break a ship in half that is the risk and the USS Sullivans is far from new and fresh with no doubt metal fatigue to varying degrees around the ships structures and hull.
@BuffaloNavalPark
@BuffaloNavalPark Год назад
Stephen, thanks for confirming what we try to get out there in public. A lot of people said "Just pump!". Well, that's not the case...we had one shot to raise her, and thankfully because of the test pumping and data analysis we were able to do that successfully!
@stephencox4224
@stephencox4224 Год назад
@@BuffaloNavalPark I hope as well you are able to research through original naval yard documents from when the keel was first laid down so that you can analyse the structure with modern day engineering modelling software to be forewarned about any potential risk areas you may encounter during not just operations like the floatation of the USS Sullivans but it's general long term maintenance to preserve this wonderful historic artefact for the people to put into perspective so form of understanding of just what the crews of these ships lived in and if not what they went through what life onboard these wonderful ships would entail on a daily basis. I know through contacts of mine that for instance the use of Zinc Chromate protective paint is now frowned upon by some bureaucrats within different sections of Government but is an essential requirement for the long term survival of both Ships and Aircraft in a marine environment, That is why unless overtaken by fire various USMC and Japanese naval Aircraft wrecks are still remarkably well preserved over three quarters of a century after their demise in the Jungles of the South West Pacific Theatre. I am lucky enough to have seen many photos of such historic crash sites because my Brother in Law grew up in Papua New Guinea and he visited many of these wrecks up to 50 odd years ago, Many now no doubt lost to time and the ever growing tropical flora. Good luck and best wishes to all involved in your highly valued endeavours

@@stephencox4224 Thanks again for your thoughtful comments, Stephen. Our naval surveyor is coming after Thanksgiving and he is going to do a thorough "once over" USS The Sullivans, and will put his recommendations to us. We have a winter emergency plan currently in place for this coming winter, and hope to get to dry dock this coming year at some time. REALLY dumb question, wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to make a permanent coffer dam around it and just pump the whole site dry, sit the ship on blocks? (like they did on that Oak Island show to drain the swamp). Visitors then get to appreciate the true size.

@BuffaloNavalPark
@BuffaloNavalPark 2 года назад
Thanks for your smart question! Coffer damming has been reviewed by the staff for a while now. The concern we have is that The Sullivans in her current state - and I mean over the last year or so - would not be able to hold her weight. The buoyancy actually helps her. We felt when discussing this issue, that putting her on blocks she would begin to collapse. That doesn't mean when she's dry docked that it won't be the best option, but for now that's why we haven't explored it more! Thanks for the question and appreciate you viewing!

While not ideal, the current situation with The Sullivans is quite interesting. Many ships are in much worse shape overall and in serious threat of sinking. This is showing what might end up needing to be done, but never actually done to other ships in the future. caveat: Interesting is never to be conflated with good. addendum: Screw ill wishers. Bad things happen, that is life. It is in fact a great thing that the ship is not being written off. This fact is far more important than that she sank. That Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park is willing to do this, is the true measure of what the ship means to them. What they did when something bad happened, not that something bad happened in the first place.

Thank you for the update. When I first saw this on national news tears welled up. This ship has deep emotional ties to many old salts from that era. The tragic loss of the Sullivan boys caused changes to how family members served in the USN in its aftermath so that such a tragedy didn’t happen again. This ship represents the sacrifices made by all shipmates in their ultimate sacrifices, the families who mourn their loss and the highest traditions of the United States Navy. May the USS The Sullivans raising be uneventful and her temporary repairs be sound. When was she due for a haul out and will she be dry docked once she is secured? Given the number of breaches to her hull that have been found thus far I can only surmise that their are more yet to come in the near future. Fair winds and following seas

Having served ten years at sea on a number of Navy ships, I can only imagine the rotten sea water pipes in the engine room at this ships age. I served on a much newer Carrier that would start leaking from certain pipes if you leaned them too hard. Gave us good practice at pipe patching and damage control. Very happy you are saving her!

Having grown up in Jacksonville FL, my dad was stationed at now NAS Mayport, I spent alot of time on base. I got to see Saratoga and Forrestal up close and personal. Lots of O.H. Perry FFG's, and several Spruance DDG's. I had never really paid attention to WW2 era ships, as I had never seen one outside of a movie. I was in Buffalo in 2017 when U.S.S. Little Rock (The new LCS) was being commissioned at the park. I had the pleasure of seeing U.S.S. The Sullivans up close and personal. I fell in love. I even started thinking of ways to put her, U.S.S. Kidd, and U.S.S. Laffey back in service. I know that's a dream and not even slightly feasible, but it's a cool dream. Anyway, my point is, Thank You for saving her. She represents not just a memorial to brave men and the sacrifices they and their families have made, but also as an inspiration for the dreams of kids young and old.

What a mess. We send hundreds of billions of $$ overseas. Congress should set aside $5 billion in a trust for the maintenance of these ships. It’s time to build world class museums where these ships are brought back to state of 100% watertight and safe.

This tin can sailor is glad you guys are making progress on saving The Sullivans. I know how thin hulls are on destroyers. It would be nice if you could get it in a dry dock and have the whole hull gone through. The ship I was on is sitting at the bottom of the ocean off the Puerto Rico coast. :(

@@gandalflotr2898 We've discussed this in the past, Graybeard, but the major concern in her current state is that she would collapse under he own weight on the blocks. For her, the buoyancy helps her. Once we are able to get her dry docked and the hull strakes strengthened we may consider it...but as of now, we worry she wouldn't be able to support herself. Thanks for watching and your comment!

Question 1. Since the public and mostly the board never cared enough to donate/raise the money to maintain this historic ship (13 + holes did not happen over night and rain water did not fill the interior spaces) where are the millions of dollars coming from to repair this ship? Question 2. It's obvious that the board and it's officers sunk this ship due to neglect, ignorance and thoughtlessness. Most boards are comprised of good old boys and people unwilling to do the work that needs to be done. They excel at sucking up and being the star when something like this happens...as we are seeing. Why is no one calling for their removal?

We appreciate your passion. Answer 1: We recognized a serious issue last year, spent a few months vetting companies and plans, and went with a two part epoxy plan to coat her whole hull which would give her 10 - 15 years of protection. That would then allow us to raise the $4 - $5 million to dry dock her! This plan costs $1 million that we did raise. Answer 2: Um...I won't go there! Thanks for watching, and check tonight's update video!
@randomuser778
@randomuser778 2 года назад
As "updates" go, this one was short on information. You've had more than enough advice from keyboard admirals about the ship, but if you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism about this VIDEO, I will offer this: You talked a lot without saying much. You may be a great curator, but you're a lousy communicator. What caused it? Have divers been under to survey the hull? Was she resting on the bottom, how deep is the water? Were there any warning signs in the days prior to the event that may have tipped someone off, or did she go from dead even to hard over out the blue in minutes? Any lessons leaned? What has been damaged? What will it take to fix? Those are just the first few that sprang to mind. Good luck with the ship. She's a wonderful bit of history.

Thanks for your thoughts, Random! Sometimes it's definitely true...I grab the camera and go as things are happening and don't have a script most of the time. There will be another Update video tonight, but it may be lacking in what you're looking for too! There will be videos coming that will go into greater detail, I promise you. Also, check out our "20:00 Watch live streams" you may find some detailed information there. You ask great questions, and again once she is on a right even keel, we will answer them - as an archivist, that's what I do. Thank you!

What is the source of the flooding? Did the hull crack? Seals around the screw shaft? Are there plugs below the waterline that failed? Has any leak been found and addressed?
@BuffaloNavalPark
@BuffaloNavalPark 2 года назад
Larry - 13 holes have been plugged over the past 10 days, about 200 ft. of her starboard side is buried in the Buffalo River bed, so they haven't been able to check those spaces yet. As the divers find holes they are patching them. That's the current information I have. Thanks for watching!

What caused caused the ship to sink so rapidly? How did all of those holes appear so suddenly ? Thanks, I appreciate all of your efforts ! 🇺🇸🦅
@absalomdraconis
@absalomdraconis 2 года назад
Supposing that additional holes appeared at all, then most of them likely happened when leaking into a different compartment caused some critical amount of sinking- with the resulting increase of water pressure on those weak spots, they would have turned into actual holes, resulting in even more sinking continuing the process.

Thanks for commenting and appreciate your support from the land of "The Church"! You're asking about a Coffer Dam. That would require the dam built around all three ships...pumping the water out, but most important is having a blocking plan and cradling. We worry that if the ships were sitting on block (cradles), especially for The Sullivans, she might begin to collapse under her own weight. We see the ravages of water, but the buoyancy helps with the preservation! Thanks for watching!

If I am not mistaken those torpedo tubes mounted on deck are the MK 32 SVTT (Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes), which entered service in 1960, five years before The Sullivans was decommed. It must have been refit with them, unless I'm mistaken.. They are still in use today, albeit updated mods. I was a sonar tech not a TM, but had to help load and unload many torpedoes in and out of the MK32 SVTTs since we were in the same division.

14-year navy vet; is there a reason condition "Z" zed was hard to set when flooding was noticed? You know this may happen again until it gets into dry dock. Also is there a way to get her onboard dewatering systems functional again? Perhaps WT doors need new rubber gaskets? I know you are trying very hard under difficult circumstances and working with 60-year-old tech.
