My buddy who's a police officer watched a MC rider pass a fire truck on the right, while the fire truck was running lights and sirens. He hit him with 10 or 11 violations. Including ones for driving suspended, no license in possession, no valid registration and no insurance. Otherwise they consisted of failure to yield, failure to drive right for an emergency vehicle, failure to remain stopped for an emergency vehicle, following a fire apparatus within 500 ft, running a red-light and a couple others I cant remember.
it would be awesome of they put cameras recording the plates of the cars when an emergency is on and then send the recording to the police and start sending tickets to the drivers who didn't clear the way to the emergency vehicle
I have always had great respect for emergency responders. Years ago, a looked in my rearview mirror and noticed a fire engine racing to a fire, so i pulled over, its the law, as it sped by me, the firetruck hit a pot hole and a piece of their equipment flew off their truck, almost hitting my windshield. I stopped off at my local fire station to turn it in. The firefighters said it wasnt theirs, but they knew what station it came from, apparently each piece of equipment has a serial number on it that identifies what station it belongs to. They thanked me and i smiled and went on my way.
Russ, your comment about how slow i mustve been driving for a firetruck to catch up to me, i was driving the posted speed limit, when i saw the firetruck. When i saw him, i immediately pulled over. Thats the law!
I've developed this habit where whenever I hear a siren I stop whatever it is I was doing, in the safest of ways, I turn the volume down and roll the window to make sure I actually heard a siren. That's why I hate songs that sample sirens in them 😂
That soundproofing thing is 100% spot on. I have a 2019 Honda and if my windows are up I literally can't hear a firetruck or ambulance until they're on my ass. It's insane.

Two solutions: Keep going and let the car get crushed and make it a law that if a vehicle collides with an emergency vehicle during an emergency the owner of the vehicle has to pay out of pocket, no insurance coverage. Second solution, give every firetruck a high end dash cam, any vehicle caught failing to yield with have their license plate run by the police and a $7000 fine issued for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Can't pay the fine? Too bad. Sell the car to pay for it because clearly you aren't responsible enough to drive

This is so very true! I drove an ambulance for many years! One of the biggest thing is people who don't pull over or stop! Stop, pullover for any Emergency vehicle because they may be heading to your love one who has been in a serious accident!
Here in the UK about 99.9% of drivers manage perfectly well to see/hear emergency vehicles when they have their blues and twos on and move over...sometimes our emergency vehicles don't even need an accompanying siren. The issue isn't with the manufacturers making cars 'soundproof.' It is certain individual drivers that are idiots.

When you see or hear sirens, pull over. Look both ways before crossing the street. Don't go 30 miles over the speed posted on the signs on the side of the road. He's got one point though. The newer cars are damn near soundproof, at least to things like a siren until it gets close up, and if you're not watching your mirrors (like you should) you won't know it's there until they're right up on you. But that's why you're taught to keep an eye on your mirrors.
In Italy emergency vehicles have the rights to smash into your car to get you out of the way if you don't and if they have to your driving license is pretty much done forever.....why you Americans don't do the same? You have tougher vehicles, tho.....
unlike what they say,; its not the fault of car manufacturers or radios, its simple driver discipline. these people know what they're doing, they dont care.
Just a suggestion....it is pretty obvious it’s a fire truck without so many lights flashing. Other road users have no idea if the truck is turning or which direction it wants to go. Only have lights on the top of truck flashing and keep turn signal lights in their normal position lower down.
In many places Emergency Responders DO NOT have the right of way. We are ASKING for the right of way, which means it doesn't have to be yielded. Please be safe and smart out there ! Siren + Light = Move to the Right !
im glad you said something. because ive seen an ambulance with its lights on (no siren) go into a fast food drive through after i yielded for him to cross traffic. it kinda tarnished me from ever yielding if their siren isnt on. and in the clips on this video, they narrate that the emergency lights are on, but dont say anything about siren.
The other issue is that people just can't be bothered anymore. Everyone is always in a rush. The only problem is that if it is their loved one or their house they will be screaming bloody murder if the emergency vehicles don't show up or are super late.
I don't know what made me think of it, but this happened Friday Oct 23rd. My bus was dropping kids off at a stop, a cop had someone pulled over on the other side of the road, and 2 cars went by my bus when the stop sign was out, and my bus driver honked his horn, and when I looked back, the polic officer was out in the middle of the road signaling both of them to pull over. Instant Karma at it's finest. Oh and the cop was there a while before my bus even started to slow down at the stop
My town has bright white lights on the traffic light poles and when they are on it means an emergency vehicle with it’s lights on are coming through. Every time I see that flashing, my head is on a swivel looking to see if I need to get out of the way
So... im European, from germany to be exact. To all the americans: If im right it is illegal to pass a Bus with the "Stop" sign out. WHY TF, doenst this law apply to emergency vehicles? it should just be a fine of something like 500-1000 $ and people would never do that. how come shool buses have more rights on the road then the emergency vehicles. For example: If im driving on the Autobahn and we come to a stop because of a traffic jam probably cause by an accident, we have to form a emergency lane in the middle of the road for Police/ambulance etc to pass threw, if u dont ull get fined atleast 200-320€. Same goes with blockin them on normal roads, If an ambulance aproaches an intersection that is full of cars, hell choose a lane and stay behind probably the shortest row of cars, those cars then have the right to move over, even go over the red light and give way to the emergency vehicle. if u dont do that and block them for an extended time ull get fined atleast 500€ (this ofc only applies if the other cars in the intersection stop and let u drive safely threw the red light.)
I was at a pedestrian crossing yesterday when I heard sirens approaching, so I waited on the crossing for the fire engine to pass safely. They need to get to that emergency far more than I need to cross the road quickly. It's about being considerate, that's all, it's free to be considerate, costs nothing other than a few seconds of your time.
Looks like the city needs to put a stop light in at the end of driveway of the Fire house so the firefighter can trigger a red light when they need one to back into their station. We have those at all of our stations in Phoenix that require our trucks to back in off of a busy street.
I have seen comments elsewhere-mostly in regards to police, but the rules hardly differ between police, ambulances, and fire trucks-that emergency vehicles are required to take care to not cause collisions themselves even while responding to a situation, therefore "If I have the green, they can wait." Now obviously, that's specifically referencing stoplights, but if they have that perspective in that situation then they have it in related ones. This expression of entitlement is incredibly dangerous. In my state, the punishment for not yielding to an emergency vehicle running lights and sirens is a reckless driving charge (class 1 misdemeanor) and comes with a mere $250 mandatory minimum fine. That mandatory minimum is far, far too low.
People need to understand that emergency vehicles are very, very heavy. If you slam on your brakes in front of an emergency vehicle, ie fire truck or ambulance, the vehicle is not going to be able to stop on a dime. You May end up getting crashed. Move to the curb and wait until the emergency vehicle gas passed. It’s a few seconds of your time.
the problem isnt just that cars are now more sound proof, the cars driving past the fire truck can see exactly whats going on. its become a "its not my problem so i dont care" situation. they are probably coming home from work and theyll be damned if anybody slows down their progress to watch their soap operas. i had a similar realization when i stopped to help a car that was stuck in the trees off the road on an icy morning. it was facing the wrong way so he had slipped on a turn likely speeding. i had my hazzards and parked next to the car, so we were both easily visible as you came up on the turn. i saw like 10 cars drive by and not a single one even slowed down to at least investigate. these people were likely going into work as was i, so it wasnt their problem and they didnt care.
Increase the fines to minimum of $3000 per such a violation. Lets see how these idiots react then. I have personally seen this happen and it's is aggravating.
For over 20 Years I was an Emergency Vehicle Driver and for the most part other Drivers were Good, but there were always a few who simply thought themselves to be Special.
I just got this video recommended after 5 years. When they were talking about texting and showed Blackberries (phone) I really got confused thinking the video was somewhat recent.
And also stop when it's sensible and safe to do so. I have seen so many terrible drives slam on their brakes when they see an emergency vehicle 10 cars back which isn't even close to them yet, causing even more delay and nearly a pile up.
I like how the brodcaster was talking about distractions when all the examples were of cars coming from the same direction the fire truck was coming from just being belligerent

Something so simple can help cure the problem, in our country we have traffic news which breaks up the music being played, it would be easy to have awareness news that comes on the radio to tell of emergency responders near your location, this will make drivers aware of things better...could even be set off by the emergency vehicles when the blues & twos are showing...
1st. Act like a panicked deer and look all around your like a crackhead, don't use your mirrors at all they are pointless. Slam on the breaks as soon as you see flashing lights. Edit* especially if your on the highway or if the emergency vehicle isn't even going into your lane. 2nd Turn into the lane the emergency vehicle is going in. The closer the better as emergency vehicles love being blocked from responding to an emergency. 3rd immediately follow the emergency vehicle very close as it creates an open lane. If there are multiple lanes make sure to leave your lane and go into the emergency vehicle lane. 3rd. Follow the emergency vehicle very closely as it creates an open lane for you and specifically YOU to follow-up in.
If you read the sticker on any electronic device that complies with Part 15 of the FCC whatever... IMO, emergency vehicles should be able to override our car stereos to play the sirens in our car so we can be alerted asap and pull over. If somebody wants to reply with what Part 15 says, please do.
Lights and sirens don't give us "right of way"...yes you should get over or out of the way. But as a firefighter i rarely bank on drivers actually getting out of the way. If I slam into someone, while driving a firetruck while running lights and sirens....its still my fault.
If each state raise the ticket prices to 20,000 per offense ( not moving over and completely stopping for emergency vehicles) this would stop immediately
Something that always annoys me is the description of punishments for offences. $100 is not enough, but the description of 8 points on your drivers license is WRONG. It is 8 points OFF your drivers license. And if people can't see a big bright red truck with flashing lights, then they should lose their license and their eyesight needs to be tested before they get it back.
in this video i see emergency vehicles using the right hand lane to pass with lights and sirens on which is incorrect and is not driving with due regard in accordance to EVOS, EVOC, etc. Even if the left hand lane has vehicles you should then be using the opposing lane so that people do move to the right. i also see failure to use turn signals. just because you have emergency lights on doesn’t mean you don’t use your turn signals. some of this is non compliance of the public, but some is operator error. as a fellow EMT we need to be striving to do better and be self aware of issues on our part as well. the firefighter in the roadway didn’t even have a traffic vest on. yet another issue.
The sound proofing excuse is just that, an excuse. we drive a buick and its dead silent on the inside yet you can still hear emergency vehicles long before you see them.
Although this seems to be a problem at :45 the 2 fire truck that are passing all the cars on the right is the complete opposite that this video is suggesting. Also in EVOC training you are instructed to pass on the LEFT, even splitting the center line, as traffic will then pull to the right on both sides of the road clearing your way...
i think there should be a system where when there is an emergency vehicle in the area when your travelling by car a warning will be sent out on your phone blocking it from any notifications warning that they need to move there is a firetruck coming shortly until the firetruck or ambulance has fully passed and left via gps tracking then the phone can go back to normal and on newer cars with infotainment systems the warning also comes up
Over here we have bus lanes that private vehicles are not supposed to use but can be used by emergency vehicles. I have been in a situation where a fire engine (truck to you in the US) was coming fast up the bus lane and could easily have overtaken me on the "wrong" side, however the driver ahead pulled into the bus lane which meant the fire engine had to pull out and I then had to pull in. If the other driver had stayed in lane the emergency vehicle could have gone straight through.
Many years ago, the city of Omaha, Nebraska dealt with this issue by increasing the fine for "failure to yield" and doing an advertising campaign for a week about the new fines, during that week, police vehicles escorted emergency vehicles and issued "warning" tickets to drivers, then, the following week or so, issued actual tickets to drivers. At the end of a few weeks, everyone became compliant. I don't remember the ticket cost but it was a significant percentage of the average cost of a new car at the time, say 10% or so.
Decent sound isolation built in the car + 40-50db+ loud music + "don't have time to watch the mirror - got this important text I need to respond to ... or ... got to hit the like button on this post" = Who gave them a drivers license ?
It would be a good to show people how to properly place and USE their frikin' rear view and SIDE mirrors. If you can see more than a small sliver of the corner tail of your car when looking in the rear view with a slight tilt of your head, you're not placing it properly. You are supposed to see the lane next to you (blind spot) not half your trunk and side of your car. And take a look, you'll see the lights coming while you get the hell out of the way.
Time to add to fire trucks devices that cause the cell phones to drop the calls, the radios to go static and any shut down every other distraction in a passenger car that requires a signal if people drive within 100 feet... Even better have that device sound the siren too... Then people will avoid the fire truck with a cushion.
In 2020? Seriously? There's 30-40% less road traffic all over the world right now, it was up to 70-80% less in March. Firetrucks could go drag racing and no one would even notice.
I was referring to the attitudes / selfish behaviours of people, which in my opinion has worsened greatly in the last 5 years. Emergency services are prone to attack never mind the disinterest in moving out the way on the road. "Emergency services drag racing" I would love to see that.
My cellphone stays in my pocket when I'm driving, and if I need to make a call, I find a place to pull off and stop first. This is just one reason why.
The problem is that people don’t care anymore. Sirens are used so often for non emergency situations just so people can go to the emergency dept for stuff that should be seen at a doctors office or a doc in a box.
