So in this Part One video I take apart and discover the monstrosity inside the 77648AN I got some months ago in Ohio. When I got the fan, the blade was stiff and would not move at all. I forced it about an inch or so and then set it on the shelf (causing an issue as you’ll see in the video). So I just now finally got around to taking it apart and found this nasty surprise. I’m guessing somebody shot lithium grease in the oil hole as well as the gearbox. What a mess. But….it’s an Emerson and of course now all is well

Well, what you really need here is a 70-year-old retired electrician. The powdered substance was originally used to hold oil around the bushings. I never saw any that was brand new, but I think it came as a string, that was wrapped around the bushings. If the shaft turning in the bushings started to get warm, from friction, it heated up the oily wax, that coated this string, causing it to melt and drip oil onto the shaft/bushing assemblies. It is still done in small appliance sleeve bearing motors, although the now, centerless bushing is pressed into a small sheet metal cup full of felt, that holds this waxy oil. Still up into the early 1970'a there were many motor oils for cars that were 'waxy'. I believe Valvoline was one.

Hmmmm…. well, I’ve never seen any such thing on any of the Emerson fans I’ve done. I really think this is just spray lithium grease someone used. These things are pretty particular when it comes to lube…,20 weight non detergent oil and pretty much regular axle grease in the gearbox (Lucas red and tacky is pretty common for use in the gearbox these days)

2:04 I find a sure fire way to get a rotor out is get my face real close to the fan, or the shaft. 100% of the time every time it comes right out in a hurry.

that yellow stuff looks like old white lithium grease

I concur. Specifically it is the lithium carrier. The oil has left the chat and is shacked up with the windings.
