Welcome to ‘Prog Song Sunday’, where we listen to a Progressive Rock song together and then discuss our thoughts about that particular piece of music. In each episode, you get two different perspectives- the seasoned Prog fan who has 20 years of experience listening to the genre (Nathan), and the fresh new listener who is only now discovering the world of Progressive Rock (Jana).

In my opinion (just an opinion), due to its complexity, it can be very difficult when you first listen to Tarkus, to understand why it is such a masterpiece.

Keith Emerson used to humorously introduce Tarkus in concert as a "A tune you can sing along to". 😊 Greg Lake played the guitars.

And a dozen Italian prog bands were born. 😉 1971 was still the early days for progressive rock, but it's an understatement to call Tarkus a major prog landmark. After the debut did reasonably well (thanks mostly to Greg's "Lucky Man"), Emerson decided it was time to unveil his big epic. Greg initially told him to shove it, but eventually came around. It's a good thing, since Tarkus has since become a hugely important piece of early prog history. It's recognized for its technical and compositional ambition, and can be considered the first suite-form prog epic. The opening 5/4 ostinato riff has been copied innumerable times, and the tacky organ/piano texture that Kieth Emerson came up with (heard at 14:50) is an instantly recognizable trademark of the group and this album. Obviously a lot of Tarkus is a platform for Emerson's incredible talent, but it really is a solid group effort. Lake shows his impressive range as a singer and instrumentalist, and Palmer continues to display his considerable prowess as a jazz drummer playing rock. Btw, I'm assuming this is a recent reissue. The mix has a different sound that's bigger than the original, which sounds great! But kudos to Jana for absorbing all of that. She's definitely less of a prog newbie now! 😃

It's about time you got around to Tarkus! 😉 "There was a lot to that one." You can say that again! Certainly a groundbreaking and important part of the history of prog. It has inspired many musicians, and has even been covered by orchestras. I was afraid it would be too long for Jana, but I'm glad to see that she enjoyed it. Thanks for the reaction and take care! 🤟

The guitarist is Greg Lake btw he was actually underrated as a guitar player and amazing bass player but seemed to play more acoustic check out his song The Sage or Still You Turn Me On Live

They were only 20 years old, 22, and 24 respectively. Pretty amazing talent at that young age. They were born right after WW2. So a lot of war on their minds. Greg played bass, electric lead, and acoustic also. So it’s 3 guys.

Greg at about 20 minute mark of your video mark used lyrics from a King Crimson piece he sang when with them! This technology was very new 52 years ago when they introduced it. In Playboy Magazine’s 70’s decade of music poll Keith Emerson was ranked #1 keyboards, Carl Palmer was #1 drummer, and GregLake was #2 bassist just behind Paul McCartney

Lake played all guitars, Emerson would play bass line on the keyboard. Check out live version on welcome back my friends. They never used guest musicians except the orchestra on works a,d that tour.

my favorite piece from ELP!..there are a few very cool, groove-ish sections in that make it flow really well for me. The last section I probably enjoy most. The Rhodes it sounds like Keith plays, I have heard many other bands use that came after. Pepe Deluxe namely in the last decade.

Greg Lake was playing both guitar and bass and when needed Keith and Greg were support each other with sounds needed to make the music rockier.... Just comment on your concern in about 30 minutes of the video. Not to say that Greg had double quitars in his collection.

Longest prog piece? Does improvisation count? Mid 70's a friend did an hours long Synth piece live at a hall in Denver, covered by the press and the ARP trade magazine. Took the Guiness record (but they had discontinued the category.) I still have the best 180 minutes edited onto 2 cassettes. Never was able to get it marketed though (silly people). Absolutely love Tarkus.

Imagine...you're 16 years old, you go to see ELP they are all in their mid 20s, the Band hasnt been in existence for more than 12 months or so..They then come on stage and perform Barbarian, Tarkus, Rondo, Pictures at an Exhibition , Nutrocker and Jeremy Bender.AND put on a great great show, some prog bands came on ...played...went off..Pink Floyd f'rinstance., could be guilty of that, Camel, Gentle Giant maybe...Greg Lake learned guitar (acoustic,bass,lead) at the same time and with the same teacher as Robert Fripp

Greg Lake played the 4 string bass, 8 string bass, electric guitar, 6 and 12 string folk guitar while also singing vocals. I saw him play a double neck bass/electric guitar also

That's the fine lead guitar work of Greg Lake on Battlefield. He was an amazing bass and acoustic player, too, so his lead guitar work on Lucky Man, Battlefield, Karn Evil 9 and others goes somewhat underappreciated. Also, ELP is a heavy prog band, as was Pink Floyd. Yes and Genesis are prog lite. Moody Blues started it all with Nights in White Satin and Legend of a Mind, so although they may be prog lite they deserve higher status than Yes and Genesis for creating the genre, with influence from The Beatles, who were more psychedelic. Many prog fans enjoy Rush (I don't) so they deserve some kudos.

Nathan, maybe you can replay short sections of the longer songs so she can review all the complex stuff she's just heard. Yes, this band is a showcase band, with Keith at the center...so yes, it's a lot of keyboards. He has a lot of musical structures to his soloing, not just repeating riffs..

For me, similar to Yes' Close To The Edge and The Gates of Delirium, the musicianship in Tarkus is absolutely superb and the vocals make the tracks for me. But, the instrumentation on all three tracks is too chaotic for me to listen to these pieces often. I much prefer settling in with last week's Prog Song Sunday, i.e., side 2 of Going For The One (Wondrous Stories/Awaken).

"When they need a guitar, who plays it." They don't need a guitar! Greg Lake steps in and plays one every once in a while, but Keith Emerson is practically a one-man orchestra, so guitar is just a bit of condiment on top of the feast.

Greg Lake is the guitarist and plays base, all to a very high standard. I wish Emerson didn't dominate the group so much, amazing as he is. For this reason, I prefer Rick Wakeman's work with Yes.

It’s ‘Dimensionaut’ by Sound of Contact- a great Prog album from 2013. I have it up because I’m doing a review this week of a new album from a brand new project ‘eMolecule’ that features two of the members from Sound of Contact: Kelly Nordstrom and Simon Collins (yes, son of Phil). 👍

Tarkus is the greatest Progressive Rock song ever. Keith Emerson is the fastest keyboardist, Greg Lake on guitar is superb, along with his fine vocals, and of course Carl Palmer plays drums and various percussion with speed and accuracy! ELP were just 3 musicians with extraordinary talent.

This unfortunately seems to be a bad "remastering" ... muting much of the keyboards' reach and some of the soaring guitar work. Remastering doesn't always make things better. The drums as it transitions to BATTLEFIELD are particularly diminished...the sound has been completely altered. Real shame ... I dont believe any of ELP had a hand in this modification of this prog masterpiece. But it's only one opinion I guess...

I like parts of Tarkus very much but when it gets very chaotic I tune out. The musicianship is tremendous and Greg's vocals are fantastic but overall Tarkus is overblown.
