Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

As Carl Palmer said in an interview, "I was with the two best musicians."

Such breathtaking instrumental superiority from a time when you went to a concert to listen and see dedicated musicians show the best of their compositions, their brilliant skills…and we as an audience were all focused on what we were witnessing participating in a higher form of symbiosis… , THATS how I remember those days… our time.. our history.. our place on the planet 🙏🏻❤️🥰 BTW: I had a big wall poster with Keith in leather gear looking tough on a Norton Motorcycle with a Apehanger Handlebar and a ridiculous “chopper seat”… the Norton Motorcycle Factory last attempt to look cool and hit the Rebel trend,…it all sadly failed which was a devastating punch to the UK MC history,.. if Mr. Emerson ever rode a Norton himself I can’t find any proof of 😜

What is really unbelievable is how promptly they conquered America, selling out arenas - with their not easily accessible music, whereas so many brilliant bands playing more straightforward rock spent years playing clubs and serving their apprenticeship before gradually becoming big there. Somehow that major feat came effortlessly to ELP - and they were huge between 1972 and 75. I think some charisma of these three young, handsome, tremendously gifted and skilled men must have helped them even more than their sometimes complex music, not really targeted at masses. And then, countless girls screaming for them, whereas Yes or Genesis mainly had masculine audience with their prog music, not apt for dancing and thus hardly attractive to females. ELP somehow had overcome all that with ease until they burnt out by mid-70s.

The messages of both Trilogy & Brain Salad Surgery impacted my future life greatly back in my college dorm days. I'd just bought a quadraphonic system and four big Bose 501's. I'd lay on the bed with the black light on and neon posters staring at me as I'd listen to "Abaddon's Bolero" build and build while chills kept going down my spine, fucking grateful not to be sent to Vietnam instead. And thanks to Greg Lake's enviable vocal cords I decided to remain on this planet, even though it's religious dogma preached that I should not...which is, after all, the "Endless Enigma", is it not? "Now that it's done, I've begun to see the reason why I'm HERE......!"

Such a great song by ELP. The build is awesome and then something interesting is usually added with each go around, especially towards the end.

I'm sure ELP was inspired by the Bolero of Maurice Ravel when conceiving this electronic masterpiece.

What's the proper pronunciation of Abaddon? I've always pronounced it like: uh-BAD-dun, but I've also heard: AH-buh-don. Just curious. 🤷

Abaddon: The angel of the bottomless pit. Sounds like a very happy and triumphant bolero for such a dark figure. 😄
