To my mind the greatest progressive rock band with three of the most talented musicians of all time
@michaelnorman9962

My first ever rock concert was ELP in 1977, 10th grade. It was frickin' fantastic! So much power from just three superb musicians. I was a percussionist in high school and we sat in the nosebleed section and we were looking straight down on Carl Palmer and see his every move. It was mesmerizing, to say the least.

This band was the kind of band that every music group should strive to be like. They made their music look and sound fun. To tell a story in such an abstract and exciting kind of way. We get great music from musicians who experiment and are creative and have a lot of fun doing it.

Hey, all you people that love rock and roll, this is actually Classical music. Those old composers back in the day such as Strauss and Mozart were wild and crazy. They probably did drugs too.

That drummer was definitely inspired by the great Buddy Rich. His drum solo had many techniques of Buddies big band jazz style playing. That was truly an amazing drum solo. And he put his own twist on it. Soooo cool.

This is my farewell to a unique, unbelievably talented musician, who taught me something I never expected from a rock genius... I have always been a classical music enthusiast...But, as you grow older, you realize you haven't heard even half, or one third, of what there is out there to hear..in your lifetime....Some folks would say I got acquainted to Claude Debussy backwards, because the first time I heard Claire de Lune, it was ELP's rendition of this marvelous piece...And, in a way, I'm glad I did..backwards, that is..Cause you usually start by hearing the original version first...But not this time...And I'm glad for that.... Thank you, Keith Emerson, by opening my ears to a composer I never really paid the attention I fortunately now see he most definitely deserved, and whom I otherwise would've missed out on..big time.... R.I.P. genius.

I was there as I lived in Munich back then, you can spot me when the audience in shown in total view at the beginning - the guy in the half-right middle frame, black hair, glasses, blue shirt hands clapping in the air over his head. Always a huge ELP fan, I have rediscovered the work of Greg Lake again listening to his versions of Lucky Man and Epitah. I usually send his clip of "I believe in father Christmas" to family and friends around Christmas. What a legend these three where. Creators of music and lyrics, arrangement geniuses und true performers. Miss them.

I had no idea he died! :( Damn! I've so tuned out to the news that stuff like this now happens under the radar. This was the first concert that my wife and I took my son to at age 9 months at the Concord Pavilion. We sat on the grass along with many other families in the very back where the sound wasn't too loud. He followed the lights and show with rapt attention for 30 minutes and then collapsed into deep sleep. A good memory!

@Elizabeth_Leao
@Elizabeth_Leao 2 дня назад
@@yamijorge Carl Palmer também era um "showman". Vê-lo na bateria e na percussão também era um espetáculo à parte, especialmente quando ele tirava a camisa ao mesmo tempo em que sustentava o solo com os pedais.

Hate to break it to you Walter, but I'm pretty sure giving props to dead Yank soldiers was not on Keith's mind when he jazzed up his second Copland piece. Credit for rolling this joint up in the Stars and Stripes for the US Navy's recruitment ads of the early 90's goes to some nameless flack hunkered down in some dank cubicle of the Pentagon's vast PR department. President Poppy and the brass really dug those ads, so I assume the flack got a nice, shiny promotion. Prior to that. an in-house knock-off of Keith's arrangement was the theme song of "CBS Sports Spectacular" during the late 70's. Actually, Copland's original inspiration for the piece was a 1942 speech (entitled "Century of the Common Man") given by a fellow whom the reptilian ancestors of today's TeaBaggers loathed worse than Black Satan hisself -- FDR's Vice President and former Agriculture Secretary, Henry A. Wallace, "Uncle Henry" was one of the finest, ablest, and most effective public servants in all of American history. Google him, read his Wiki, watch Ken Burns' "The Dust Bowl" series, or Ollie Stone's "The Untold History of the United States, Part 1", get educated.

@rhythm head I have to agree. Greg's bass style is crisp and clean. His part may not be front and center because as part of the rhythm section, he helps build the framework with Robert. Nonetheless, he shows stellar musicianship. Being precisely on beat through runs with varying tempo and holds that are not in his control shows the melding of Greg's zone with Robert and Keith. Doubling up his notes at the speeds that they can go, well it impresses me. 'Fabulous performance!

Even if many women didn't like prog for the most part, I'm sure plenty of them liked ELP. If you look at their early videos, Keith and Greg had their shirts open and Carl took his off during their performance. They weren't doing that for men, I don't think.

Emerson is playing the Alesis QS8 which was pretty new at the time. Apparently he commissioned the Alesis company to record the synth-brass samples of his mighty-sounding and mega-expensive Yamaha GX1 into the QS8 and then used the keyboard as marketing for both Alesis and ELP. I have the QS8 and regularly use that GX1 sound myself to play this tune. If it was good enough for Keith it's good enough for me.
