After 2 deflating defeats to Unai Emery's Aston Villa last season, Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal team looked to exercise a few demons on their Saturday trip to Villa Park, an evening kick-off in gameweek 2 of the 2024/25 Premier League season. With goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey, Arsenal ran out 0-2 winners against Aston Villa, and in this in-depth tactical analysis I will show how the game played out.
Unai Emery set his team up in an initially extremely effective 4-2-4 mid-block which stifled Arsenal's build-up. Yet, the turning point came when David Raya made his tremendous save to deny Ollie Watkins, provoking Arteta to adapt Arsenal's build-up to bait, overload, and exploit the spaces in Villa's press.
Suddenly, the Gunners took control, with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Kai Havertz becoming more prominent. As ever, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, and Benjamin White were imperious, although Morgan Rodgers proved to be a thorn in Arsenal's side throughout.
This video also covers the performance of Jurrien Timber, and what the competition with Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko means for the future.
Lastly, I also talk about Arsenal's changed press, and what Mikel Arteta did to keep Aston Villa's threat limited to just transitions.
Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Martinelli also featured for AFC, with Pau Toress, Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne, Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans, Matty Cash, Leon Bailey, and John McGinn making up the Villa 11.
Arsenal followed up their opening day victory against Gary O'Niel's Wolverhampton Wanderers to make it 2 wins from 2 in the Premier League this season, whilst Emery's men couldn't back up their opening day triumph against Juan Lopetegui's West Ham United.
