Emery's Plan, Arteta's KEY Changes: Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal Tactical Analysis

After 2 deflating defeats to Unai Emery's Aston Villa last season, Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal team looked to exercise a few demons on their Saturday trip to Villa Park, an evening kick-off in gameweek 2 of the 2024/25 Premier League season. With goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey, Arsenal ran out 0-2 winners against Aston Villa, and in this in-depth tactical analysis I will show how the game played out.
Unai Emery set his team up in an initially extremely effective 4-2-4 mid-block which stifled Arsenal's build-up. Yet, the turning point came when David Raya made his tremendous save to deny Ollie Watkins, provoking Arteta to adapt Arsenal's build-up to bait, overload, and exploit the spaces in Villa's press.
Suddenly, the Gunners took control, with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Kai Havertz becoming more prominent. As ever, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, and Benjamin White were imperious, although Morgan Rodgers proved to be a thorn in Arsenal's side throughout.
This video also covers the performance of Jurrien Timber, and what the competition with Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko means for the future.
Lastly, I also talk about Arsenal's changed press, and what Mikel Arteta did to keep Aston Villa's threat limited to just transitions.
Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Martinelli also featured for AFC, with Pau Toress, Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne, Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans, Matty Cash, Leon Bailey, and John McGinn making up the Villa 11.
Arsenal followed up their opening day victory against Gary O'Niel's Wolverhampton Wanderers to make it 2 wins from 2 in the Premier League this season, whilst Emery's men couldn't back up their opening day triumph against Juan Lopetegui's West Ham United.
This channel covers the entire Premier League, including Manchester United, Eric ten Hag, Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, Chelsea, Enzo Maresca, Liverpool, Arne Slot, Newcastle United, Eddie Howe, Brighton and Hove Albion, Fabian Hürzeler, Tottenham Hotspur or Spurs, Ange Postecoglou, Everton, Ipswich, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Brentford, Southampton, Leicester City, the Champions League, and much more!

Top vid harv,one of my favourite tactical games. I noticed our initial build up structure was in a 4-2-4 with Ø dropping into the pivot next to TP5 pushing rice high,but the interesting part is as we progressed up the pitch our structure went into the more traditional 3-2-5,with timber stepping in. I also thought timber’s subtle movement was very key,him releasing the ball just at the last second really allowed us to exploit space. My only negatives is still the LHS I really don’t like rice that high,I feel like he’s doing water carrier shifts for partey OOP,he needs to be the 6 merino can’t come fast enough. I was really impressed with calafiori’s cameo looked unfazed,so comfortable on the ball and amazing in timing his duels,really can’t wait to see how the LHS looks with him & merino. Saliba btw best CB on the planet. Nonetheless great win onto Brighton,COYG!

@harveygration 22 дня назад
Yeah, for the type of OOP structure we were up against it was probably all a bit too rigid tactically for me - even though that is nit picking. Ode's swings, Timber's staggerings, and Partey's more aggressive positioning really helped add a bit more deviance from what Villa settled in to expect - a change I was so happy we made, very good. As for Rice, I just do not like the idea of him playing this iteration of the LCM role: box crashy, stretchy, and a progressive outlet- ew. He suits the OOP stuff to a tee, but he does too back in the 6... As an 8, he needs to be able to pick up the ball from deep and help carry the team up the pitch with him, or be allowed to open up towards the RHS. It makes me feel not right at all seeing him offset higher than Ode all the time, kept out the build mostly, and being accessed in tight spaces. The Merino fit is clear - so is Rice as an 8 but not this variation. Totally agree with you. The dynamics around Gabi on the left are also considerably better but are we still asking him to be a lockpicker when we know he is not? For me we seem a bit 'in between' as a side at the moment, if that makes sense. As for Jurrien, only encouraging signs post injury return. Confidence and influence will grow, and that was part of the reason his role was different to the staggered, in front of the block, and touch-heavy Zinchenko vs Wolves and Leverkusen. Thanks again TBG!

This is the most level headed breakdown of the game i have seen. I thought we played pretty well given the opposition and results we had against them last seasons. I thought timber was better than the ratings he was given, Partey was great on the ball especially in the first half. There was progress from the first game against Wolves and for me, that good enough. We move!

I’m surprised when fans criticise Martinelli. We play as a team and Martinelli’s specific role was to push the RB and RCB and he did that brilliantly and at the expense of himself. Trossard, although brilliant himself, cannot press like Martinelli. In which allowed Arsenal to overload the right with Saka, Odegaard and White. Why Arteta is a genius? Because he controls the game by forcing the opponents to react exactly to his tactics. Not because the opponents were weak and unable to play. It’s because they were good and reacted. That’s why Arsenal struggled against non-reacting teams.

Good video with good detail but overall haven't seen much difference over what we ve seen before, its the inverting fullback, it's two 8s moving around, we ve seen odegaard move to the sides so many times before. Of course due to personnel and opposition there will be variations in the play. Timber is not same as zini so partey had to get the ball more, but obviously timber offers more movement, opposition press required adjustments etc. Just goes to show that if arteta didn't play havertz in midfield last year in both villa games, the end result may have been different. Finally, havent seen nwaneri play in pl yet, so hopefully soon

Thanks. Good analysis to explain Arteta's post match comments. I'd like to ask why did it take Arsenal 55 minutes to figure out of the tactics? Any specific reason why couldn't Arsenal staff figure out patterns of pressing in the first half itself? Is this something the players have to learn instinctively?

In a fixed double pivot, yes - but not a lone 6 job. He could do it, but the impact he (will) have on our final third play needs to be platformed too. He is also an option as a pure MF, that I really like - a homemade LCM.

It’s interesting, I thought we weren’t moving the ball quick enough in the first half but your analysis explains why that was….we were trying to find solutions to beat their press. I wonder if we’ll look back at our tough fixture list at the start of the season as a blessing in disguise……maybe we meet tricky teams away before they get into their rhythm. Time will tell 😊

@harveygration 21 день назад
It's why I was fairly content with the tough schedule - it really focuses us on mental and physical preparation before the season - and both departments look in very good order, thus far. Like I said, I think the 3-3 base is a really good mid-block manipulator as a matter of fact, especially if we add something extra to it in the market. Just took a bit of time to understand the context of the game.. But I liked how we never looked fazed.

I like Calafiori's potential ceiling as a lockdown defender - and I also like Timber's ability as a pure MF (with time given his injury though). Timber could very easily be a homemade LCM option.

Great vid Harv! Couple of points -Thought JT looked good, handled bailey exceptionally well - Agree with you on martinelli. Martinelli needs to be fed IN THE BOX. He's not Saka who's self sufficient, he needs service (Could do with a confidence boost as well) - Lastly I think merino will ease the burden on rice as that 1v1 dueler.( Similar to xhaka, think of his performance Vs Newcastle away with jorginho in midfield)
@harveygration

Thanks again mate - truly - and I agree! We've lacked that Rice coverage (even if Merino isnt a pure 6) to help him in the engine/duelling room of our MF and take the burden from him. Criticism of Nelli is fine but not if you are asking him to do a job he has never showed he can perform (lock picking from wide/in isolation).

It was a tough game for Arsenal, as Villa marked really well the box shape from Arsenal's build up and it took a little long to find solutions to counter attack it. It's talked a lot about Rice's conservative passes when he play as a number 6 (5 for me as I'm brazilian) but I still don't think that using him on the top of the box in this more rigid system suits him well, because he needs IMO to carry more the ball from deeper areas to really flourish his game. He looks too mechanic and unnatural for me so high on pitch, so I hope Merino can help a little to activate the LHS more. Great analysis from you, one more time, Harvey
@harveygration
@harveygration 21 день назад
I do not like it too - our current LCM role is more an outlet for our progression than driving force of it - and Rice should be allowed to drop and carry the team up the pitch with him when he plays 8 - not be kept out in the tight spaces higher up and be limited to box crashing. The OOP stuff suits him of course, but I just feel even here you get more value out of him defending in the 6. Plus, his progression via passing is underrated as it is. As for Villa, the 4-2-4 is a really effective way of matching up with the 3-box-3, as it showed; and the 3-3 structure is a much better manipulator of mid-blocks, especially when you have players of such high tactical understanding.

How do you think he’ll end up using merino? Will he be a sub for Partey or will he take his place? I imagine rice will end up sitting deep in a pivot and merino will be a bit further forward
@harveygration
@harveygration 21 день назад
Rice mins in the 6 when Merino plays (will be pretty similar to our current LCM role). Partey will have mins still, but we have another dueller and engine in the middle to alleviate some problems in transition now, which is brill.

Were they trying to copy Bayern Munich tactic against us in the cl last season?
@hesoyammy9438
@hesoyammy9438 21 день назад
No. Bayern slanted their defence to force the ball onto Gabriel. They knew he is pretty bad at carrying the ball, so they were heppy to give him space. Villa did look to exploit Gabriel, but they'd jump when they felt Arsenal were not set to play out as efficiently.

Please do a breakdown on Raheem Sterling, is his form a result of a toxic environment or physical decline? We all know Sterling is a baller, though

Do you think with the arrival of Merino rice will be pushed back to the 6 and do you think Rice is good enough in the build up?
@harveygration
@harveygration 21 день назад
When Merino plays, yes. That is Rice's long-term position still for me, and that is something I have never wavered on.
@cedundar

Most of the games we tend to mix up our build up with long balls into havertz. I cant remember us doing that to Villa, what is your look on this? Is it because Arteta choose to focus on control?
@harveygration
@harveygration 22 дня назад
Villa pressed us on a trigger based system as opposed to full blown aggression, probs your best bet. Raya lots of time on the ball
@cedundar
@cedundar 22 дня назад
Don’t you think it would give us more variety if we still play long in those situations. Like creating an option B2, for plan B. (If you can still follow me, like to exchange thoughts)
@harveygration
@harveygration 21 день назад
I think second ball wins off Havertz would be difficult with Onana so deep tracking Dec. Villa also kept a +1 on us in the backline at all times. For me, it would have been fruitless

What about Rice? from my perspective he was absent. Have I go this wrong? I would prefer Rice as 6, he doesn't have the creativity of Partey, why couldn't Partey be an eight and Rice a 6? Rice is a great worker but doesn't seem to have the cretivity. What are your and others thoughts on this?
@harveygration
@harveygration 21 день назад
I don’t like Rice in his current role. For an explanation see why on other comments. He can do it. And his relationship with Trossard is actually very good, but long term, he is our 6.

Isn’t Partey no 6 whose main objective is to break the counter attack more than play making ? Others can be good with ball in Arsenal as number 6 as well when you have Odegard and Saka are ready to take the balls. This is not the first time where Partey has come short when defending. People need to admit that with Partey at number 6 we won’t win the league . With any other clinical teams like city , Liverpool etc. they would have shipped lot of goals with Partey playing like the way he played defence. Arsenal quickly need to find a solution as Rice looks burned out and is not sharp like last year and looks slow. With city game coming at this crucial time , I hope Arsenal sort themselves early .

Harvey, when showing shots of the game PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep to more specific explanations, sometimes the pictures have lines showing passes, positions or movements, and players’ names, other times they don’t. Why? It’s annoying and hard to follow. And also there are times you mention players’ names while going into detail but it’s unclear where that particular player is in relation to others because inexplicably NO NAME tag appears above the player you are talking about, plus while I’m figuring who is who, the video moves on… It happened many times during this video, and has done so in all the others as well. Perhaps you unwisely assume everyone can keep up whilst you flit from one moment to the next. I appreciate you have a time limit but DO NOT try to squeeze too much into too short a time. It’s truly frustrating and I hope and pray you deal with this obvious problem. You can point out Arsenal’s areas of weakness but seem to overlook your own. I have been subscribed to this channel for a while, and like all your videos and because I do I have felt duty bound to say something.
