I got a TRBX174 a couple of weeks ago and had wondered about pickup upgrades but hearing the stock ones against the EMGs, I prefer the stock sound! Thanks for doing the demo!

Man, those EMGs are straight to the point and fantastic clarity. Stock pups sound good too, but the difference in the lows makes it seem like a worthwhile upgrade.

The stock pickups sounded surprisingly good but EMGs all the way for me, a much richer sound.

If you play alone, practice. Originals is good, you can choose sound you like. Once recording in the mix, EMG will show the value.

Nice change, I love it, they used to have an australian bass Maton that had cream loaded pickups in the 80s

I appreciate your work and I can hear the difference with headphones, I find the originals to my liking. The EMG”s gave and almost compressed, somewhat flat sounding response. A long time ago I put a set of Shaller (sic I believe) PBX in a Squire P bass and while being “hotter” they also gave a similar compressed response.

I actually like the stock pickups better. They have more punch and growl. Nice demo. Thanks!

Thanks! They're both nice. The low end on the active ones are a little bit easier to tame.

Tone wise, I agree. I didn't see the annotation on the back of the originals. I wonder if they are Korean G&B who are the OEM for YGD? I suspect so, because they are impressive considering the price of the TRBX.

The Yamaha 174 is a great bass for the money. Thanks for the video comparison, lots of work involved. I like the stock pickups better, warmer tone to me. The stock J bridge pickup hums a bit, so I recommend a J Humbucker replacement from Seymour Duncan or something similar.

Yamaha TRBX174 is my first bass. A guitarist, I researched & thought long and hard before pressing the buy button. Decided to KISS, modern and standard scale for my first bass, so after thinking of a TRBX304 that and general unavailability due impact of COVID on production and distribution for the past couple of years entered the equation. Other than Ibanez & Cort, Yamaha really has no peer value equivalents. I like the Cort Action Plus PJ equally, but it was a close run thing which again along with general lack of availability and a couple of other factors favouring the Yamaha, I went with the TRBX. In hindsight I'm glad I did. The saving permitted me to buy a better amp than initially planned for need and stay within budget. I'm delighted with every aspect of the TRBX174.

@@theblytonian3906 I just installed the DiMarzio Ultra Jazz noiseless J pickup in the neck position. It is much louder and fatter than the Duncan, and it is quiet. I highly recommend the Ultra Jazz pickup.

@@417ah7 do you mean a jazz pickup in the bridge or neck position for a TRBX 174 ?

Emg sounds great for the studio work, very linear response. BUT i prefer (good) passive pickups with more dynamics.
@chunhungmok3474

Extra voltage power supply would improve dynamic so mucb
@dalrok

The EMGs don't lack any dynamic range compared to passive PUs, there's a reason why a lot of metal players use them. You don't have to use 18V, the additional headroom is only needed if You play extremely hard. Most passive PUs have a more 'bumpy' frequency and dynamics response that has greater dynamics. I play EMGs for over 40years now in several basses (P, JJ, PJ, MM etc. X or non-X) and have compared them to other high-quality passive PUs like SD (classic & QP), DiMarzio, Haeussel, MEC, Lindy Fralin etc. I also like and use them regularly esp. the SD Js, Haeussel & DiMarzio Ps, MEC soapbars etc. They all sound different, but the ones with the most even dynamics-response curve are the EMGs. That's the reason they're so great for studio sessions and a lot of sound engineers prefer them over passives. You simply play direct into the interface and You're done. Btw.: compression also happens in passive PUs, e.g. JB PUs with the double magnets, that produce the somewhat compressed mids tone. It also happens in high Output PUs, the higher the output the higher the compression.

Hello Andrew! I have an Yamaha TRBX 174 RM-14 bass guitar. Could you please make a complete video on how to change the strings and neck relief? Because my strings are with high action and I don't know how to adjust string tension😭
@andrewglossa
@andrewglossa 3 года назад
Hi! I'll see about making a video.
@vince8081
@vince8081 2 года назад
You have to make an adjustement with the truss rod and maybe low the bridge saddles, 5 minutes operation.
@asuntos.publicos
@asuntos.publicos Год назад
@@vince8081 search in the internet for truss rod relief. You need a proper Allen key and turn gently, slow quarter or a complete turn CLOCK COUNTER WISE or the same direction as of you were to tight a screw. Wait a few hours and see. If not satisfied, repeat the process. Remember to give time for the neck's wood to feel the change. It should low the action between the strings and the fretboard. If it doesn't work, go to an expert or a guitar repair shop.

Nice demo! Sounds like the set isn't properly matched, as the bridge position (J) has got a considerably lower output than the "neck" (P). I had the same issue with my ca. 1999/2000's set - whereas the ones I bought in the mid 80s were absolutely *perfect* . I *never* should've sold them! Dunno what they've done to screw up what used to be a fine PU set, but they certainly did it - for whatever reason. Lesson learned: If it's got to be EMGs, make sure you get a used set from the 80s!
@andrewglossa
@andrewglossa 2 года назад
Thanks! I've lowered the neck pickup a little since and it's helped the balance.
@senhorspock
@senhorspock Год назад
Agree: EMGs have changed over the years... And, IMHO, not for the best... So, nowadays, if you want the same "match" of the first PJ's, you have to install a regular EMG "P" + an EMGX on the bridge. Then you'l have the same output of the old EMGs...
