I migrated on this very ship as a 7 year old in May 1953 with my 6 siblings, I was so surprised to see my Mother saying her final goodbye to my tearful grandparents in the departure lounge in this film clip, which was heart breaking for me, as this was my last memory of my beloved Oma and Opa who I never saw again. Also seeing my young mother who has passed away now was very moving. I remember waving goodbye onboard the ship when we departed and watching all the sad people on the dock waving their last goodbyes My Husband of 56 years also came to Australia on the Sibajak in 1954. It was wonderful to see this film clip and much to my delight I still understood everything ,I can't wait to show Children and Grandkids. Happy Aussie.

As a then 10 year old and I off 13 under the age off 13 I have so many memories off that amazing journey and have a new respect for our parents who must have sacrificed so much to give us a wonderful life in Australia.I remember so many things and adventures from that time in my life. So thank you.

When I first started to watch this I didn't know that this was my trip. We left Rotterdam 2nd May 1953. Went via Curacao, Through the Panama canal, Panana, Tahiti, Wellington NZ finally arriving Sydney on the 10th June and disembarked 11th June 1953. I was only a child of eight, but this video has refreshed many things in my mind. The highlight though came when I saw my father in full view coming up the stairs with life-jackets in hand going for the emergency drill. That really made my day.!!!!

My mother came on the Sibajak in 1957 to Australia, the film gives me an insight of what mum experienced on the ship.

I was 4 when I migrated to Australia, arriving 5th Dec 1950,. This documentary kindled so many memories for me. I would love to know more about my original trip. Anyone ? I returned to Holland in 1965 on the Oranje and back on the Flavia. I remember reading a book called 'avonturen op de Willim Ruys" very slowly as I never went to school in Holland. Anyone have a copy ?
