I agree, and any time people say if the genders were reversed and it was a man with a teenage girl, I’m thrown because i feel like that was/is far more the norm
@@kiimimo_9833no no, George was significantly older. She was in high school and he a grown man. Meemaw talks about it in some episode. Maybe the age gab wasn't quite that big but definetely more than a year
I actually thought the same.. even if the roles were reversed, I wouldn’t see it as gross. Also, I don’t think it would’ve been uncommon anyway during that time in the 80’s 😅 lol
The age gap isn’t the problem, the problem is one of them is underaged. Like if the dude was 18 and the chick was 38 so making the age gap wider, it wouldn’t be an issue.
@@chi7818 yeah, I understand that just fine. Do you not understand the concept of acting? Or are actors somehow morally responsible for the actions of the characters they portray?
@@masterjedi8072 see this is the thing, if a tv series had a 17 year old girl get knocked up by a 20+ year old guy, that show would get so much backlash and hate and no amount of “it’s just acting” or “we are trying to show uncomfortable situation” would excuse it. That’s what people are trying to say, but instead they are trying to move the focus to the age difference when in all honesty no one gives a shit when an older women hooks up with a younger guy. Look at Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore for example. As for it being acting, of course people know which is why we aren’t calling the actress a pedo but questioning the decision of why they added it.
@@chi7818 it's pretty accurate. I went to a small school (about 300 total students) and there were two girls that got pregnant by guys that were in their early 20s. There was also a senior girl that was knocked up by an 8th grade boy. None of them faced charges. So it's not a matter of morality in the show, but a recognition of reality. In fact, the show is downplaying it by making his age a deception. I'm not saying these are good things, just that they're real.
@@masterjedi8072 see I get the argument that it’s showing the darker side and sadly things like that happen but your not getting the point that they are only doing this because it’s an underaged boy and an older women. They won’t do this for literally any other situation but it’s okay in this specific case because no one gives a shit about guys and a 17 year old guy shouldn’t be complaining about getting laid. For example, they will never show a grown man in his 20’s knocking up a high school girl and nothing happening to him like you’ve seen, but it’s okay showing the 20+ year old women getting knocked up by a man underaged boy. Both of these happen but one is okay to show and one isn’t.
People must not understand they didn’t glorify the relationship they showed Georgie being a selfish lying idiot teenager (very realistically) lying about his age to get laid, which women do all the time as well. So they are showing how they handled a young man doing something stupid and stepping up to handle the responsibility of his mistakes and becoming a father at a young age
@@ebelesaurus2 I think if a women lied to a man about her age and it happened the same outcome should be upheld even tho I know it wouldn’t, but we have to be honest almost everyone thinks women mature faster than men mentally and physically so if that’s true why do we protect younger women from older men so much more than vise versa?? I personally don’t believe women mature mentally faster than men which is why I think that are more easily manipulated by men than the other way around most young boys that are 17 can handle the emotional things that come with sleeping with and older women why younger women/girls cannot and it’s much more psychologically traumatic for a younger girl to hookup with an older man when all he wants is sex. Society and women want it both ways… they want us to believe that they mature faster but when something like that happens they want all The protection and non of the personal responsibility
@@ebelesaurus2 shure, a 17 year old teen mom lies about her age gets pregnant and how since she is religious want to mary the man who she lied to. Its not a comedy its a tragedy.
Still rape if you follow the laws someone that is 17 can't give concent to have sex whit a 29 year old, if it was a 29 year old male and a 17 year old girl it would have been outrage and the actors would not try to defend the problem.
I mean, that’s essentially what you’re doing when you berate employees for not having more registers or lanes open. I remember working retail, busting my butt on busy days, and having to tell customers, “I didn’t make a conscious decision to have less coworkers”. Lol

For those who don't know. He lied about his age, she didn't just purposefully go after a 17-year-old. She thought he was closer to her age. Edit to clarify: He ordered alcohol because they were at a bar. Also, others have clarified that the age of consent in Texas was 17 years old. The age of consent is different dependent on the state or country they take place in.
That doesn't matter she as the adult should have asked for an id or something. If a girl lies about her age with an older man it would still be on the older man.
@@ElJoseMasReal EXACTLY, thank you for answering for me. They were at a bar if I remember correctly. But he definitely ordered alcohol. So a person seeing them order and receive alcohol at a bar could typically assume they were at least 21+. And I think he lied and said he was close to her age, I think she asked as well. But again it's been quite a while since I saw the clip. I've never watched the show but I saw literally just the clips of this scenario, because people were freaking out over the age gap a bit ago as well.
@brbgboxing5738 honestly in the 80s it was more common for girls of 17 to get pregnant than this and fo we need to remind you its a tv show even if roles were reversed its still a tv show AND YOU REALLY THINK people in the 80s asked for id 😂
a lot of people and happy marriages wouldn't exist without things happening that were absolutely morally wrong. morality clashing with good outcomes. however that doesn't change much, even if the person didn't see themselves this way or consciously know this, 100% they only go after a 16-17 year old because they're attracted to the fact that they're young and inexperienced.
Don’t forget that Georgie lied about his age when he met her. Therefore, she thought she was sleeping with someone much older. Then she gets pregnant and learned the truth.
If the roles were reversed this would be passed off as a poor excuse and it’d be stated that the adult man should be responsible enough to verify her age. So… let’s keep the same energy here
The same goes for a teenager woman lying about her age because usually, girls prefer older boys instead of the same age. Edit: and honestly, 14yo boys are much easier to identify, as they are usually skinny, and with no body proportions defined. Girls, on the other hand, due to makeup and other stuff, can easily look older.
This isn’t even illegal even if she did know his age; the age of consent in Texas is 17. Also, he lied about his age, so it’s 100% his fault. She has no way of knowing he was that age. Also why aren’t people questioning the writers about this? The actress had nothing to do with this
Context is important.... In the show, she did not know that he was 17 because he lied about his age. She got mad at him once she found out that he lied.
Age of consent is 16 in most countries- I was 18when I got together with my then 24 year old bf- I dont think a few month would have made too much difference😂. Huge age gap relationships are more prone to unequal power but they can be healthy nonetheless. I am now 23 and have no regrets😂
@@beansandrunningI agree. I was 17 (and already graduated from high school) and my BF was 24. I moved in with him on my 18th birthday and we got married at 19 with baby one at 20. And we have been married for over 25 years. It’s really not creepy to me if a late teen dates a young 20 something. Everyone is always so keen to make young adult men who it to be creeps and teens as being little children to protect. 😂. I knew exactly what I was doing by age 17.
Thats right. She stopped speaking to him when she found out and only reached out again because she discovered she was pregnant and needed his help. Also while i dont love or encourage this age difference age of consent in Texas is 17 and has been for a while so they cant really do anything about it legally
The show doesn’t pretend that her relationship with an underage boy is normal or good, but she fully believed that he was of age and he went to great lengths to convince her. In the show, it’s portrayed as something that’s wrong, but also something that they move past from. And ultimately in no small part due tot he fact they’re raising a child together, they do fall in love and decide to stay together. It’s a complicated story that doesn’t really put the start of the relationship in a positive light, but shows that things can change between people over time.
Here, he repeatedly lied despite her coming clean. The point being she would have walked away if she knew the truth and he knew that. Meemaw also knew he was lying and didn't warn her.
She also feels a significant amount of guilt when she does find out and only reaches out again when she discovers she is pregnant. If she hadn’t gotten pregnant she probably wouldn’t have contacted him again
Why do people give a fuck about an age gap when it comes to acting it’s acting the Internet issue full of people who care about the wrong shit is more important. Shit to worry about in this world.
Other than that, initially in the story, she did not know that she was going out with a 17 year old boy because Jordan's character (Georgie) lied about his age and she only found out when she was pregnant by him.
To be fair, this wasn't Emily's battle to fight. This was the producer's battle to fight. Also, I love Young Sheldon and I was never freaked put about it. I think it was done very well.
IDK why people are obsessed with an age gap. All of these people think their own relationships are perfect but in reality, most of them are far from perfect
Me and my partner have got a 16 year age difference between us. I was 18 he was 34. For the first year everyone gave both of us hell, calling him really disgusting names that I don't think I need to say and me a gold digger. We ignored them because I was legally an adult and he was broke asf, we didn't get together to use each other like everyone assumes cus we both had nothing. Even now I still get some people claiming he "groomed" me which I just roll my eyes at since I went after him not the other way around. Thankfully a few years later the comments stopped and we now got a baby boy who is turning 1 in July and we support and love each other

For the people saying if the roles were reversed there would be outrage. The roles have already been reversed in multiple shows before Young Sheldon without much backlash. Pretty Little Liars an incredibly bad show. Had a Teenage School going character called Aria who has a whole romance with her much older Teacher throughout the show and eventually marries him.
If Pretty Little Liars were real events, every single one of their parents and several teachers would be in jail. The girls would be kicked out of school for the amount of truancies. What do you mean it already has been. Pretty Little Liars(A Shit Show) had a whole subplot of one of the teenage girls having romance with her teacher. A show called Switched At Birth had a similar subplot where the Deaf girl has a romance with her teacher.
My parents are 11 years apart in same direction, but my dad was mid-20s when they met. And you’re on a faster timeline in that situation anyway. They should’ve waited til he was 21. Also, IF marriage is before sex, 17 girl with 29 man should be socially allowed. Similarly, ideally, the girl would graduate high school and work a 40 hour per week job to appreciate adulthood before she marries him.
People aren’t really accounting for the wider context. It’s not like they had Emily’s character ‘grooming’ Georgie, he bullshitted her into believing he was 23. It is far less common for women to smudge their age to be older to impress dudes, whilst it happens pretty often the other way around (half the dudes I know have tried to fake being 25 at 16 trying to get some uni girls at a bar). This was a situation where the dude was still the perpetrator of an ‘immoral act’, the girl was just clueless. It’s very different to the scenario which people have in their heads when they’re talking about this.
It’s still fugged no matter how you slice it. If you’re unsure, ask to see ID, you shouldn’t be embarrassed to ask such a thing if YOU ARENT SURE. Ignorance won’t hold up in a court of law, cut and dry. I’ve seen it happen to many people.
Women and men both lie about their ages all the time. And how many 16 year olds did you know that could make it into bars to chat up women? Maybe I lived a different life, but that seems less than plausible to me.
I think you’re very wrong about the idea women don’t lie about their age 😂 the number of women in gen Z who’ve admitted to being on dating apps in high school pretending to be in college has to be at least 50% in my experience. I would say MOST teenagers girls have dated an adult 😐
Girls use makeup and clothing to make themselves look older and they'll share tips on how to do that with each other. For boys the only chance they have is if they can grow a beard early.

Yes the relationship would not work on the principal of the “half plus seven theory”. 29/2+7=21.5. So basically it falls outside of socially acceptable limits being she has to date 21+ and the age difference is significant to the point where they would just be at much different places in life. The more you look into this theory the more it makes sense.
Interesting theory. Hubby is 9 years younger and I have wondered how it worked out for us as well as it has. The way I see it we meet in the middle, with him being more mature for his age and me being young at heart. I swear, I thought he was 25 when we met. 😅
absolute crock, love only works to a formula if everyone in the world is exactly the same, there are countless healthy long lasting relationships between couples with significant age gaps often above and beyond 11 years George and Amal Clooney 17 years Blake Lively and Ryan reynolds 11 years Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves 13 years Jason Statham & Rosie-Huntington-Whiteley: 20 Years Heidi Klum & Tom Kaulitz: 16 Years Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones: 25 Years Emilie Livingston & Jeff Goldblum: 30 Years I could go on. even in my own life the longest lasting relationships have been with women significantly older than me so to say that relationships wont last because the maths don't add up is bunkum at its very best. as for the story its not real people no one need to defend anything, if people had to defend whatever there character did every time someone got offended the world would be awash with actors apologies.
@andrewwright6540 17-year-olds may be minors, but they are not children. Since when is it required that sexual congress be restricted to partners of the same "stage of life" (whatever that means)? 16 is the age of consent in 34 states. So yes, it is quite normal for late teens to have romantic relationships with partners over the age of 20. What isn't normal is this weird infantilization of people who have reached sexual maturity and are months away from being eligible to vote or being subject to compulsory military service, capital punishment, and other very adult risks and responsibilities.

Honestly you Americans need to get over this obsession with everyone having to be dating someone a week older than them. In England the legal age of consent is 16 and none of these weirdo problems happen over here. You guys judge a 18 year old for having relationships and it’s biologically backwards, it’s almost like you want to accuse anyone that isn’t above the age of 21 of well being a that very bad word. I live in the state of Michigan and the legal age of consent is 16 here to but yet if you are 18 you can be charged as a sex offender for dating someone who is 16.
In my country the age of consent is also 16. Although I see the problem, I don't think it's that bad for a 17 years old to date someone older. People also have a problem with 18 years old dating 20+ and it's a mindf*ck. They expect only 20 can date only 20, 30 should be with 30 and 40+ with 40+. This only happens in USA.
@@Koshrocreations No? People just want people to date people within their age range. Teenagers should date teenagers while adults should date adults. Is it not that hard to understand?
My father was 27 my mother was 17. My mother got consent by her parents to be with my father. They had been together for almost 35 years until my mother passed from a heart attack at 53. We dont know these people in real life, it not our actual issues.
This is not all that uncommon. I had a relationship with a 34 year old woman when I was 17. I knew she was older she knew I was younger but age never came up. Things didn't work out though we remained friends for quite some time, only reason we found out about the age difference was because I knew her oldest son from school. A female friend of mine started dating 30 year old men by the time she was 13/14. She looked like a grown woman and was very mature. She'd get fake IDs and go drinking at bars or clubs in the hopes of meeting someone. And she did this with several of her friends who were all under 18. All of this was back in the 90s when there wasn't as much focus on this kind of thing. The internet wasn't what it is and no one age checked anyone else unless there was a reason
Thank you for giving us your experience. Some ppl blow this sort of thing out of proportion. Not every case is a active “predator/groomer” taking advantage of someone’s naïveté
As a young teen, my mom and all her friends did very similar things back in the 70's. The terms "grooming" and "predator" that dictate to the masses how we are to think and feel about this hadn't been invented yet, so naturally it wasn't a problem.
From my personal experience, I felt pretty invisible to women until my mid 30s, when I got a lot of gray hair. Both older and younger women will check me out, especially if I dress well. Since some women are pretty discreet when they look, I suspect someone is underage when they are not so discreet. In fact, they can be just as bad as a guys with the stares and head turns.
@@melissasylva6000 why would I be so well read on those laws like you are? Only someone who wants to get into a kid's pants would know so much about consent laws bud. Should we check your hard drives?
People forget that for many, they sadly need to see an example of what's wrong to recognize and root out that behavior. There are ideals and there is reality. This is a reality for many people. The dynamic of the relationship isn't glorified, nor is it presented as something people should do. Depicting and being a voice to a problem seen in real life on set or on stage does not make you that thing. With the amount of actors that pretend to be good people and do awful things behind closed doors, it's shocking the amount of people who are mad at an actor for playing their role, and not the script writer who made it and put it infront of her.
I don't understand why people are so upset about the age gap between Emily and Montana. Their both are adults, and if they didn't feel comfortable with doing the tv series they wouldn't take the roles
its about the series dummy not abt irl actors. in the show he is 17 and hse is 29 .IN THE SHOW. so pedophilia and pregnancy shown as NORMAL AND FUNNY . ion rlly care abt it but i get why some ppl are
@@lilbottle9709you obviously never watched the show and if you did you didn’t get the point… he lied about his age, she didn’t knowingly jump the bones of a 17 year old. Once he told her about his age she ended the relationship, until She found out she was pregnant and he stepped up as a young man should to take responsibility for his actions, glad I could clear that up for a moron like you
@@lilbottle9709 The entire family was shamed and outcasted for it and other shows have done the reverse before without any backlash. You're just mad that the older person was a girl this time and people aren't rioting.
