So enjoyable for all the explanations. I love your videos. I will subscribe. Thank you I live in Louisiana and have many birdhouse gourds I purchased. Thank you 🥰🥰👩🌾👩🌾
@@lcostantino7931 - I couldn't remember this video, since it's been years, now, since I watched it. I believe I lost patience with it because of the ambience of the presentation...she has a slight New York accent, so maybe she's from Tarry Town in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow...but I digress. I thought she had good tips for the beginner birdhouse maker and gourd grower, which I'm guilty of the charge. I've grown gourds, and should now pick them up from the yard and put them in a dry place to cure. Later, I'll drill the holes, collect the seeds and make bird houses.
Great show, Emily. Fantastic personality and good tips! These gourds pop up all over my yard, so I am gonna go make about forty of these! :) Happy Holidays
I want to lobby for the tiny, neighborhood birds. I've just spent 7 months with a wild bird who roosted in my broken forced air heater. The entrance to the heater box was very small. It was just a 2 bent louvers on the side of the heater box. That is a very small opening. That tiny bird found the entrance and announced it's presence, " tweet ! ". I didn't know it at the time, but we were nest mates. That entrance existed for months before that bird found it. I estimate that the bird felt safe in that box. It was a unique setup, almost like a science experiment where all variables are controlled. Certainly, predator birds we too big to enter the box. The bird felt safe, and so , with nothing else to do, it listened to me, including bathroom visits. It listened to me from when I woke up in the morning until after I went to sleep. The bird would listen to me as I laid in bed, and if I scratched or turned over, the bird would tweet. If I yawned, it would tweet. I tried yawning silently, and it could hear that, too. It didn't take long before the bird discovered music, and that really changed things. Long story. The upshot of this is that tiny birds are smart, and they pay attention, hunt at night, and have reflexes so quick as to make me think that these birds are able to catch insects on the fly. The bird understood and was interested in human emotion. It identified human emotion on both TV shows and You Tube videos. In short, these no account tiny birds may be the intellectuals of the neighborhood. So, set up a bird house with a small hole for the tiny birds. You might not ever see them, since they hide during the day. And when you're sitting in your garden or porch, play a recording of any solo instrument, like wooden flute, or harp, or piano, or guitar, or even pure percussion solos, and see if any birds are listening.
Great video. You are very calming to listen to. What type of paint? Enamel? Latex? Outdoor I would think...also what makes them all so shiny? Polyurethane? Thanks for any responce back. I grew my own gourds last year & had a great harvest in s.w. Arizona. Thanks again
I never have treated them with anything. I do let them dry in a cool dry place away from sunlight (my cellar) throughout the winter. They are sanded by hand or with a sander attachment (fine grade sandpaper) they will last quite a long while after painted and may be varnished. Thanks for watching!
6 to 8 niches is to long for the nest 1 to 1 1\2 is ideal the birds can't get it wrapped around their necks baby bird woke end up choking itself to death on a longer string or yarn
wood glue for the perches but I must add many people cautioned after I posted this video, not to add perches. You can scroll down to read the comments. The paint can be anything that will weather outside. Thanks for watching!
Watching you I see a bit of unsafe methods. As for perches - I watched a large bird just grab a baby bird right out of the hole - without standing on a perch.
Please do not feed birds bread. EVER! Also please do not put out string. It can twist around birds legs, beaks, and feathers. You can buy nest fluff from different sites.
Susan Burdett Judging from all the other commenters, You seem to be the only one who can't "see" the video. Have you yet figured out what the problems was?
Marny5580 I wasn't trying to be a smart mouth, just wondering if you solved your problem. I had no trouble seeing it and was just curious as to why you were unable to. I suppose not everything has to be commented on. Sorry if you took this one the wrong way.
