AuthorsLive is excited to welcome the award-winning, best-selling author of "Station Eleven" and "The Glass Hotel," Emily St. John Mandel. She will be reading from and discussing her latest novel "Sea of Tranquility," a novel of art, time, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon three hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.
About Emily St. John Mandel:
Emily St. John Mandel's novels include "The Glass Hotel," which was selected by President Barack Obama as one of his favorite books of 2020, was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and has been translated into 21 languages, and Station Eleven, which was a finalist for a National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and won the 2015 Arthur C. Clarke Award among other honors, has been translated into 33 languages, and will soon be a limited series on HBO Max. She lives in New York City with her husband and daughter.
About "Sea of Tranquility":
In this captivating tale of imagination and ambition, a seemingly disparate array of people come into contact with a time traveler who must resist the pull to change the past and the future. The cast includes a British exile on the West Coast of Canada in the early 1900s; the author of a bestselling novel about a fictional pandemic who embarks on a galaxy-spanning book tour during the outbreak of an actual pandemic; a resident of a moon colony almost 300 years in the future; and a lonely girl who films an old-growth forest and experiences a disruption in the recording. Blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, Emily St. John Mandel’s dazzling story follows these engrossing characters across space and time as their lives ultimately intersect.

I haven’t been much of a reader since having kids, and even before then I was always a slow reader. I picked this up completely randomly while at the beach this week and devoured it in less than a day! There were so many elements of this story and the writing that I absolutely loved I just couldn’t put it down, so happy I decided to pick it up in the first place!

Yes, I picked this book up on a total whim, I haven't read anything by her or really heard of her, I knew there was a show called Station Eleven that was really popular and I saw she'd written the book because it said it on the cover but other than that I just picked it up and decided to get it. And wow, I just finished it and I was amazed. The character development was AMAZING in this book, I was so excited to see certain characters again and learn more about them and more about what was happening as a whole. I'm about halfway through this video but I'm loving learning more about her and where her head was at writing this and I absolutely agree that characters are super important and the characters in this were absolutely amazing!
