Eminem shouting “Fuck!” At the end of his second verse is probably my favourite part of the song. I can feel the emotion he puts into it, the culmination of all the feelings of the person whose POV he’s rapping in all tied up in that one shouted word.

Fun fact: despite being on Eminem’s most hated album, it’s his 6th most streamed song in his entire catalogue Edit: as of 21 April 2022 it’s now at his 10th, when I said it was his 6th, I was looking at an Instagram post that came out last year, that being said being at his 10th is impressive given how much the album is hated

Funnily enough this is easily one of my favorite songs by him, it's just genuinely chill music but people always want whatever isn't released and what isn't realistic in anyone's style. It's a fad to hate on him. I have a 15 year old daughter who shits on him all the time just because it seems to be the thing to do. I'm not a huge fan, but I think he writes good songs, is a talented guitar player and singer and a strong lyricist. Pop music is a young person's market and most young people have terrible taste.

I love Em's ability to pen emotions and express his feelings even if it is twisted in many ways. To me, this album had a few gems, and this one specific piece is quite raw and brutal. Many of his songs throughout his career seem like letters written to different people in his life and an explanation on his part. Like 'mockingbird' is a deliberate note to his daughters, 'Cleaning out my closet' and 'Headlights' are written towards his mom, and lastly, 'Kim', and 'Bad Husband' from this album as well, are to his ex-wife. However, 'River' seems even more special, as I feel like it is an explanatory note for an unborn child. I really like the way the last few lines of the 3rd verse, especially, "Bet I really woulda loved your smile' in this song elude a rather heartbreaking ending. The love triangle in this story was literally in a wreck and a baby could have complicated the situation, even more. So, abortion seemed like the only fruitful route to opt, but obviously, Em feels wrong to do so, blaming his own actions in the 2nd verse, on the 'forbidden fruit' line, feeling bitter about the termination but realizing that the child would have been born in a lie, as nobody planned for the baby but when it became an actual probability they planned for an abortion. A baby should be brought to the world out of love, not through a spiteful plan. Sorry, for such a long comment, got overwhelmed when I saw your video analysis. By the way, I like your work as well. Much love from India.

I can see why it isn’t his most popular album but honestly this song reveals so much about his life and what was going on that it’s hard to still not applaud his efforts. This song is just a creative story, not his real life. He happily raised his child , starting when broke, then adopted and raised his sister-in-law's child, and his ex-wife's child with another man. There would be no reason to abort his own child, when he is capable, loaded and willing to take in and raise kids who aren't even his. If he got a woman pregnant, in any situation, no way he wouldn't support it or raise it on his own, which he has said. Not all songs are autobiographical. Some are jst creative and some are taken from friend's lives, movie plots, etc.

Knox, this has got to be one of my favorite breakdowns of yours ever. The way you kept paraphrasing and reconnecting the story and theme throughout the whole video and how his layered metaphors connect so deeply to the meta theme /story, for example I only ever thought that "wreck, tangled" was for the shape wordplay, I didn't even think of the unborn child being the 4th corner of their out-of-shape relationship, keep doing you Knox!! As Ed comes to the part where he says, "Oh, little one!" and after that Em says, "I'm sorry", it feels like he's greatly deprived by the fact that he really had to abort the "little one" because of his sins(as Ed's hook states) so he's apologizing for the unborn child that he directly/indirectly considers the victim of his deeds.

19:20 I've always heard Denver.. I'm not American but feel like through the years "The Denver river" has passed through conversation/media. Best part is how Ed say “little one” which foreshadowed the abortion from the start and sent me wheeling the first time I heard this.

River is one of my favorite songs from Revival. I understand why Revival was hated but there was some really good songs that came from that album that wasn't political like Castle, Arose, and Bad Husband(This includes Framed) are really good the first time I heard it I was shocked to find out it came from Revival

I haven’t made my way through the entirety of Revival yet, but from what I have heard, I can kinda see why it isn’t considered one of Eminem’s top albums as a whole. The lyricism/poetry/storytelling that makes Eminem who he is is there…it’s just that there are quite a few out-of-left-field collabs and a handful of songs with beats/production that aren’t particularly pleasing to my ear. But for me, the songs that really hit, hit hard. I mean, “Castle” and “Arose” literally could have been an entire album in and of themselves, and it would have been a f-ing masterpiece. “Walk on Water” is amazing. I also love “River.” Ed’s hook is gorgeous, Em has crazy condensed rhyme schemes and great wordplay (as always), I appreciate the religious/sinful/Biblical references, and it’s straight-up good storytelling. I think the music video really adds a lot to the song - it is it’s own work of art in and of itself (and it makes me sad that we haven’t been able to see Em star in more movies).

You need to listen from start to finish and in order. Then you get the big picture of it all. Take an hour. Throw the headphones on, lay back, close your eyes and just listen. Some beats and production are a little whacky, yes. But you have a better appreciation when it's listened to straight through.
