Sometimes a very talented artist can paint such a compelling picture that it can draw some relatable experiences that are difficult to visit. This song did this for me. Join me on this very interesting journey...
Snoop Dog said it best when asked about this song... "Who hasn't had a fantasy about murdering their spouse at one time or another... Em was was just crazy enough to make a song about it!"
The track STAN was actually made way after this track KIM..... so Stan was emulating "Slim Shady" in the Stan video as he was such an obsessed fan that he put his own girlfriend in the trunk the same way believing that Eminem's lyrics were literal. It was to highlight the perspective of a deranged fan that takes all of Eminem's music literally and doesn't understand the context of the art.
Stan is even referring the song "But I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain't like you . 'Cause if she suffocates she'll suffer more, and then she'll die too."
There's a line in "When I'm Gone" that he speaks from Hailie's perspective: "help mommy, her wrists are bleeding." That was true, and it was part of the fallout from songs like this and '97 Bonnie and Clyde, he was singing them at shows and she just couldn't take it.
Kim tried to commit suicide after Em performed this song at a show she was at. They had somewhat reconciled and she had asked him to stop doing that song live. Em was still mad, performed it directely to her.
I used to listen to this all the time when I was feeling angry as a teenager. It’s a full on throw up of raw emotion. Some people hurt others, or themselves or keep everything inside. This is a him using his art to get his pain out
Please edit this post with a link so he's more likely to take note. Bonnie and Clyde is an awesome song; and has another link to Stan. "If I have a daughter, guess what I'ma call her? I'ma name her Bonnie"
the part in the last verse u didn’t get with the son walking in and getting killed is probably the craziest darkest part of the song: he’s explaining to Kim how he’s going to cover up his crime, he killed the man she cheated with and his son so he said he’s going to make it look like Kim killed them and herself
He did get into a lot of trouble for this song, infact he invited kim to watch him live at one of his shows, then performed this song in front of her while doing the actions to a blowup doll that he called Kim right up there live on stage in front of her, she then went home and slit her wrists
Wow, can't believe we finally got here! This is great - you should continue to expose yourself to all aspects of Em's art! Check out the sequel to Kim next: '97 Bonnie & Clyde - an excellent storytelling song, and much more comedic
Your stories are always chilling man, honestly your reactions are golden and seeing you be so mentally stable and optimistic after everything you went through and try to get the best out of life makes me really happy and optimistic too
I've been there at his place, with my wife and in my head had own Kim scenario, happily for both of us nothing happened... Didn't heard this song in ages, but now while was listening it... I know how he felt. People do not appreciate him as much he deserves, I know how big and popular Em is but there isnt other artist who open themselves as much as he did, especially in early stage of his career.
Glad you saw it as him venting! Because that’s exactly what this song was to him. He even apparently played it at a concert with Kim in the audience, such intense emotion
Also Damn i never knew you had that kind of upbringing... I've watched quite a few of your videos now and you just seem so... Pure. Very genuine and kind. Usually you can get a feel at least a LITTLE if someone has experienced shit in their life so I never would've guessed you went through the things you went through as a kid. Biggest reason I'm commenting this is I just want to applaud you AND say thank you. It's incredibly rare to see someone who went through what you went through and come through it still able to be a person that personifies kindness, gentleness, seemingly unweighed by baggage, and give so many smiles. I'm going through a bit of a rough patch right now and your videos have made me smile a lot (:
Thank you so much for your kind words and I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through it right now. I would just encourage you to know that what you might be going through is something that is going to build you up and make you a stronger person. I hope that is the case and that you will come out of this on the other side a wiser and stronger person because of it. Blessings to you my friend.
@@larryshair you're very welcome (: I appreciate your kind words as well. You're a safe person but I don't wanna share too much cuz RU-vid comments sections are wild loll but yes I know things will get better and definitely trying to be thankful for the positive things I do have in life. I grew up similar to you specifically in that I was very blinded to the amazingness that rap can be, so your videos really resonate with me. Thank you very much music reactor dad who lives in my phone 🫡🙏🏼
Man Kim used to be the taboo song my friends lured me in with. My parents got me the censored version of the album and I only knew of Kim from my buddy's uncensored cd. Think had I to be around 13-14 and this song felt so wrong to listen to, which has always cemented it into my brain.
@@AloneInThePark went back and edited the comment 😂 the censored version. In replace of the song Kim was a song called The Kids. Took inspiration from South Park based on the voices he used in that song. It’s actually pretty funny.
@@TropicalHat420 didn’t realized I wrote uncensored in my message. 😂 went back and changed it. But it was a classic on its own and not a lot of people know about it. I was a freshman in high school when this album came out so when I bought the cd on my own I didn’t realize it was the censored version until I started listening to it. But I kept it and when I got more money from my job I got the uncensored version and that’s when I heard Kim. Crazy times it was. Glad I grew up in the 90s and 2000s when it was all happening.
Although released before Kim, ‘97 Bonnie and Clyde acts as a great sequel in an entirely different tone. Then as a resolution Bad Husband is amazing. This is the only song of Em's I don't listen to because my abusive ex played it on repeat when he was drunk- and by repeat i mean hours and hours of it on a loop. I'm in a way better place now and that was 2 decades ago- yet I still had to turn the volume off before commenting. It's crazy how music can affect us even unexpectedly. Love Eminem! Just can't handle this particular song. Still dropping a comment for the algorithm though.
“Stan” it’s an amazing song not just beacause of the outstanding lyrics but also because of the painful vision that EM got of himself, as someone who had been in an extremely dark part of himself and shared all this thoughts and acts through the lyrics, what had a bad effect in lots of fans who saw that dark place as something cool or possible for the first time. EM recognize that Stan acts are sort of side effects of the bad inspirations and influences shared through songs like “Kim”
@@larryshair it wa a great reaction! Well done. I appreciate Eminem's honesty and willingness to discuss topics many don't. Even when he's being ridiculous.
Just imagine this was the first Eminem song you listened too.. I feel like we wouldn't have had all these wonderful reactions, you woulda noped outta there if this was one of the first rap songs you really tried to listen to :')
The first time I listened to this song I was doing my math homework.. I can remember this because I couldn't believe what I heard. He meant that shit.. but thank God he chose to commit that in a song rather than real life 🥵
I absolutely love your Eminem reactions. I’m so glad you understood it was like an artistic expression of real emotions people In similar situations resort too. He has a lot of dark material I’ve been nervous about you discovering. He has a lot of dark serial killer type material. But it’s honestly incredible work.
You have to listen to the interview with Kim. She talks about how he is as a husband and father. She also talks about him performing this song with her in the audience
THANKS FOR SHARING THE NEXT SONG TO KIM IS BONNIE AND CLYDE 97 AND AFTER THAT LIKE 20 YEARS LATER HE DID THE SONG BAD HUSBAND!!!CRAZY CREATIVE!!!OH YEH EMINEM IS A HUGE FAN OF HORROR MOVIES!!!!
Maybe the third time I´m hearing that song. Big big Eminem fan but this song is haunting for me. All the pain, deception and anger is so raw. You feel it all with him. Always a skip when listening to mmlp. Great storytelling tho. You should do Bad husband next. :)
This song is performance art. (A scary thought, but maybe if he hadn't got rap as an outlet, he'd actually done what he acted out here...) When I got this album as a kid (I know, right? :D But I didn't understand a lot back then - was just starting to learn english), and listened to it from beginning to end countless times, this song became a skip for me after the first couple of times. I've started to listen to it a few times in the last... maybe 5 years, and it actually became a good one to come back to, for me. I appreciate the art of it, the movie-like quality, Em's acting (even if it's veeeery heavily inspired by his true mindstate of that time, so it was probably not that hard of an acting job :D), and the MUSIC. I love the "beat" actually.
Just watched your whole video, and what you’ve shared with us, wow. I’m just gonna say how brave you are, and thankfull to you for sharing this listening/reaction experience with us. One of the best reactor in my book!
‘97 Bonnie and Clyde picks up where this song ends. Ironically, it actually came out before Kim even though it takes place after it chronologically. It is a much better song than Kim imo. The subject matter is still completely off the wall and insanely dark, but it’s incredibly well written and is the second half of this song.
The chorus “I don’t wanna go on living in this world without you.” To me, means “I can’t live this life without you in it, especially you leaving me for someone else, therefore, if I can’t have you, then no one will.”
I appreciate you sharing your experiences. I feel the same way about this song. Not one that's on my regular playlists and I'm glad that this is a historical version of Em and not the current version.
SUGGESTION: Rock Bottom - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r06jqFkHr9g.html This song is off The Slim Shady LP (1st commercial release) and is actually one of the oldest songs on the album it was written a few years before the rest and he decided to include it on the 1st album with Dr.Dre although it was from a time in his life when he had nothing, got fired from his job, wrote and recorded a demo of this before attempting suicide around Xmas time which is close to Hallies birthday. Very old, sad and brilliant lyrics here from a very early eminem.
Stan was not based on a true story, but it was inspired by Em's real life experiences with obsessed fans, and wrote it as a message to them not to take his lyrics seriously.
"Boss move"??? She went home and slit her wrists after he did that. She literally tried to off herself. I love em but what he did is definitely not something to be admired.
I’ve been waiting to see you do this song. Been in this dark place myself finally listened to it don’t ever wanna be in this place again. Sorry it took so long.
Believe it or not this was a love song to Kim. He said he didn't want to do a sappy love song for her. (Read The Angry Blonde biography for reference).
Yeahhh this track should come with a warning. A lot of people are still not ready for this track after all these years...good that you did it though. It's part of the whole Eminem story.
i had the same experience you described when you were a kid. almost totally identical. wild what adults just do without thinking of the effects later down the road.
From what I heard Eminem wrote this song after him and kim split up and he wanted it to be a love song to her but he didn’t want it to be the normal love song you’d expect. After this song Eminem and Kim got back together. He performed this song at a concert using a blow up doll to represent Kim. Kim went to this concert and went home and ended up slitting her wrist which is why Eminem probably hates this song now. I think this is also referenced in when I gone by Eminem because there’s a line that says help mom her wrist are bleeding
Check out these songs out next in this order, they continue the story: 97’ Bonnie & Clyde Mockingbird Castle & Arose (preferably in one video) Bad Husband
Wooo!! It doesn’t get much more slim shady than kim! As others have said. You gotta go 97 bonnie and Clyde next. It’s the perfect addition to Kim Loved the video as always! Keep em coming!! ❤️❤️
Also. Stan is after this. Stan as a fan copied the song Kim. A line in the song " Hey Slim, that's my girlfriend screamin' in the trunk But I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain't like you 'Cause if she suffocates she'll suffer more, and then she'll die too"
I cant believe this was the first song off this album you listened to..lol, at least the rest wont be too much. This song actually makes me tear up...obviously the story is a representation of his emotions, and a lot of this album seems over the top, but shouldnt be over analyzed and just take it in. Glad your finally starting on what I and many believe to be his best album.
The craziest part of this song is they got back together after this song. She cheated on him, there was a whole fight he got in trouble for when he beat the dude up. She had a baby that isn’t biologically his, but he adopted the baby. Bonnie and Clyde is the next song after this, then Bad Husband is his apology to Kim for everything.
I've wanted you to start doing more Slim Shady songs but was afraid they'd scare you off. But if you made it through this song and still want to be a Stan I might just start commenting more.
This song doesn't really sink in for everyone, but for someone who's been through a similar betrayal, it really hits home as we can understand the kind of headspace something like this puts us in. Really shows what it can do to someone's mental state, and for that fact alone.. this song is a form of art in my opinion. Not many songs these days will go this far to get a message across. I love it, I love him, and I love your reaction! I'm glad you see it the way he really intended, the pain, the mental state, the important message. Can't wait for the next one!
There are two reasons why he did not get in trouble for this... Firstly a song doesn't hold up in court because it's artistic expression and two he was still with Kim when it came out, he actually told her it's a love song and if you understand slim shady it is, he killed her because he loved her so much
The son comes from the one censored line earlier on, he says "there's a 8 year old boy dead with a slit throat in our living room".. that line wass even censored on the parental advisory version of the CD... And then the ending of this song where you hear the duct tape and car door is actually the starting of the song Just the two of us (aka 97 Bonnie & Clyde) and that follows him going back and getting Hailie from the house, oddly enough that song came out first on the slim shady LP and "Kim" didn't come out til his second album (the Marshall Mathers LP) so it was a neat thing to bring a storyline back in prequel form like that.. even though it's intense as all heck and caused obvious real life issues with the real kim
yo its my 3rd comment today on one your vids. I like the deep stuff more like when im gone and so on. BUT this is rap. better you rap about this things than actually doing it. This guy is so fucked up and on the other side he is so smart and down to earth. gotta love him. best ever. Dont know where i would be without rap music
Same, alcoholic father and lots of abuse. But I loved Em and this song was one of my absolute favorits of his as a teen. I liked to listen to agressive stuff like this song, Slipknot's "Iowa" etc. It was cathartic and therapeutic
In ‘97 Bonnie & Clyde he says “Mama’s got a new husband and a step-son, and you don’t want a brother do ya? Nah”, So, the ending to this song is Eminem killing Kim, her new husband, her step-son and making it look like Kim killed them and then sliced her own throat. Kim and her new husband have a fight, one of them tries to grab a knife and during the struggle, he accidentally gets his Adam’s apple sliced. While this is going on, his son has woke up, he walks in, she panics and he gets his throat cut. Now they’re both dead and Kim slashes her own throat, so now it’s double homicide and suicide, with no note.
97 Bonnie & Clyde has to be next since it's a continuation of this song. Eminem actually wrote 97 Bonnie & Clyde first, but figured it needed a beginning before dropping the album. (Prequel)
This song was actually made during one of his and Kim's breakups. He actually played it for her after they got back together and before it was released. He said to her, "it shows how much he love you.", lmao. And from what I understand, Kim actually really liked it. Oh, and P.S. welcome to Slim Shady, hahaha. Pure and unadulterated... U probably should have eased n2 the Shady persona a little at a time. But you seem to have dove n head first 😂😂!!
Lmao. Glad you did this and you kept an open mind. 💙 I've always said, if Em didn't have music, I think we may have seen him on the cover of a newspaper for something we wouldn't want to hear about 😳🤣. This is such a good song. I wish he'd write a horror movie. And you'll understand that wish whenever you get to 'stay wide awake'. You still have a little ways to go before getting to that one though 🤣. Another great video! Thank you!
@@larryshair you have a great little community here. Everyone makes it easy to engage 😊 Plus, more comments push the algorithms (more range for your videos 🤣). Doing my part to help a little 💙
