Different kind of business. Artists don’t typically treat the arts like a job, there is no clock in or clock out. You do the work whenever you can and for however long you can or until it’s done. It’s also why the arts is so easily exploitable.

@@ruekurei88 yep. My passion is writing and I’ve found I do my absolute best writing between 6pm-3am with a slight buzz. It’s actually a big part of why I never pursued writing professionally; I’m a perfectionist and I was worried I’d become an alcoholic. I can write from 9-5 of course. But the concepts, stories, characters etc. are all significantly better when I do it my way.

This is how Em protected his sobriety, he set boundaries and made choices in order to keep the train on the tracks. Not enough artists and creatives have enough people around them that really care, most people in their orbit are there to exploit and maximize profits not caring at all what this does to a creative person’s soul. Em got the help he needed and kept people around him that actually cared for him and helped him keep himself accountable so that he was then able to give us art. Most artists aren’t business people and that’s how they get chewed up in the meat grinder, easily exploited. We’ve lost too many brilliant people, I’m proud of and grateful for Em still being here.

E.g Writer usually wrote whenever they have a sparks of inspiration, don't care if it's in the middle of the night or noon. These people gonna work as long as their creative juice is flowing then stop whenever they feel like it. In contrast Em 9 to 5 approach to work made him sounds like american psycho. Dude make it as if he can just turn his creative juice on and off on demand. Like imagine you're musician who just get into the flow would you want to cut it off? Well in reality dude's probably keep working on the rhyme in his head as he go home or lyin in his bed.

That attitude got him out of a trailer park, got him to the top and made sure he is still there. I love how he also knows it's a job and he finishes work to go home to his family. Such a talented, humble and amazing person. His stage persona is not who he really is and despite all he's been through he's still back in the studio every day. 😎

It’s called discipline. Time management and efficiency is key. As you get older, you realize that time is precious so you want to make sure that you spend it wisely on things that you value most rather than BS stuff that stresses you out. He probably learned how to set boundaries and structure for himself when he went through his sobriety journey and therapy. ❤

Everyone is talking about how it’s no surprise he treats it as a job but people don’t understand that running a business usually fucks up your schedule bc you work on any opportunity no matter what time of the day on one hand. On the other hand it’s a creative craft that depends on inspiration, vibe, mood and setting. Most creatives can’t be creative on command. They have to get into the vibe to really perform at peak level. And especially to be satisfied with the outcome. Music is art first and business second. It’s not something you can just force out. Otherwise you’ll hear it. There’s not many artists that can plan on producing art. It usually just happens.

I lived behind Ems studio and can confirm this. Em drove a white eacalade at the time. They also had a basketball hoop and would play daily. I wish i wouldve had the mind to record back then, but cellphone cams were shit. i remember seeing so many celebs pull up like dre, d12, 50, proof. All super cool guys would always wave or say whats up.

He’s mentioned keeping notebooks around, I wonder how much time he spends writing outside of 9-5. Inspiration hits on its own time, so you can’t ignore the flow state when it hits. A lot of comments about Em treating it like a business is therefore good for his business, success, etc. Sure, but also showing up at 9, taking a proper lunch break, and putting in the hard work all that time but leaving promptly at 5 means he's taking care of himself and the ones he loves properly. He made time for himself and family and friends. Of course, that may not have been totally the case when he was having his drug problems, but in general, this is a good way to be if you are fortunate enough to be able to control the factors in life to make it so.
