Luna Rossa Sails look so much nicer in grey rather than black. I know it's anal, but there's not much more to comment on these boats and the racing. And that's the 3rd time in a row that Jimmy Spithill has got a penalty for the boat he is helming.....
(... certo che a me Paul Cayard mi manca 😊)
Even for the first 5 legs, bit of an over stand at the 4th mark made it unnecessarily close. When ETNZ just sailed to VMG (as Outerridge says on comms) instead of covering on the last leg, they had huge pace, you can see the boat twitching and the lead meters growing.
Got to think that Team NZ were just practicing their close racing techniques. The boat is faster as the final leg shows. 80 meters becomes 480 just like that.
And they massively over laid the last downwind mark sailing what looked like another 100m. Either a massive mistake or was intentional to get closer racing. That accounted for most of the meters LRP caught up.
🤣🤣🤣 delusional comment. So in your opinion LR lose 200 mt in 10 seconds in the last leg because of ETNZ boat speed? They started the engine?? That’s so funny! And I suppose that with American Magic you let them win 🤣🤣🤣, but how generous! What braggarts you are. We’ll see.
Question, Does the former All Black , Sir John Kirwan have a son ,Luca Kirwan ,who is a cyclor for The Italian Americas cup team Luna Rossi Prada Pirelli Yeam
@@sarago63Not when you've been runners up to ETNZ for the last 3 AC regatta's.....& that could've been 4 AC campaigns. That 1 in 2014 still hurts. Up 4 nil in best of 9 races & in the 5th race, time elapses for race duration. Dean Barker & ETNZ were 30secs from the finish, with LR more than a minute behind(still can't forget that Spithills smug grin once the committee made the announcement). Been loving seeing his face😢😢 ever since 2017 racing the Catamaran's.
Luna Rossa is a great team, so are the kiwis. Prada will have to be more disciplined too many penalties. Great round great racing. It is going to be interesting to see which teams improve the boats and tactics in the next round. It is a lot closer than it appears, great fun.
So basically in the second penalty italy try to engage from below and force a tak, but get too close to TNZ. In the third pen TNZ engage italy from below (out of diamond this time) and proceed to luff till enter the diamond, Luna Rossa has to keep clear and when she finally tak is already late and get the pen, correct? How many seconds have the upwind boat to tak once TNZ establish the engage from below? With traditional sailing boat everything is slower and you can have ...what? 3 seconds before the other have to react? what about here? It looks very fast to my naive eyes
Now THAT'S what you would call a drag race 👏🏽👏🏽 🎉. Congrats Team NZ. Regardless of the penalties, we can all expect these boats & teams to perform & race to conditions, rules & regulations. Up The Wahs. 😜👍🏼
Todays racing was tense as F#*k its not just the opppsition but the sea state and inconsistent wind, one fluffed or slightly average manouvre and the lead can change, you cant relax.
Im Kiwi and glad we won but LR got ripped off on that 2nd penalty its clear that we did not give LR enough room when we made that tack as it was clear that LR could not do anything else that rule should change and that 3rd penalty was 50/50 i feel we were givien that race respect to LR and lets go team NZ..
Well that wasn't boring! Interesting concept of having a diamond but I guess essential at these speeds. LR looks really good and put the Kiwi's on their toes thought they have got to get on top of the match racing and avoid the penalties all of which were unnecessary.
it is clear that today there are only 3 boats capable of competing. Aside from the errors and penalties that are part of the game, only one boat recovered 500 meters to NZ. Congratulations Kiwis, see you soon! IT ♥LRPP
@@SoaaJr When I feel sad seeing that many of my fellow citizens lack sporting culture, I console myself by seeing that in other countries, even after receiving congratulations, the situation is even worse.
I'm loving this banter. I thought it was only reserved for an Allblacks loss - of course everyone has an opinion when their team "looses". With sailing there are many vagaries that can make a difference, the wind, sea, tide etc. That know one has control over. As the commentators alluded to (who generally are quite balanced) mentioned the "sea state" a lot. And lets not forget, NZ forfeited sailing in their own back yard by taking it off shore to a neutral area, that is risky to me. No one knows anything until the end of the Americas cup. Nor sure what you all think, but I love the mono hulls over the cats
Just an uneducated question: how does one determine who has "the right of way"? Ahead vs Behind? Upwind vs Downwind? Because it seems to me Luna Rossa was always the one getting penalties regardless of the situation.
Basically the boat on starboard (with wind coming over right hand side) has right of way. Also the windward boat needs to keep clear of the leeward boat.
That’s because there is no simple answer to your question. It depends on multiple factors in any situation, and that is what makes it difficult and interesting. The Rules are nevertheless carefully written and have evolved in such a way that there is virtually always only one right answer to every situation. I don’t think there were any penalties today which a reasonable coach would take issue with.
Actually on rewatching, I think the second Is controversial. I would love to see a clip from the umpires explaining it, and giving their honest opinion with further analysis and the luxury of no time pressure as to whether they still considered it valid.
some decent explanation from the commentary team would help a lot of us landlubbers to understand the technical start penalty and other details that make the race understandable. Isn't that what the commentators are supposed to do???
I really do not understand the penalty on leg 5. TNZ tacked way too close, PRPP had to bear away to avoid a collision. I thought the penalty should have gone to the kiwis for tacking too close.
New Zealand had the right of way ,so Luna Rossa was to close. All the penalties were following to close. So there is a protective bubble around each boat and for safety reasons (a collision) the other boat cannot encroach. Thumbs up for Prada for taking it to the edge. Unfortunately, they crossed the line hence the penalties.
I miss the scurrying, deploying and gathering-in of the spinnaker, the heeling - to get the best hull-below-water. I miss men vs men. Now it's just fast plastic and faster computing.
@@petergrundy8081 the kiwi a are just inflated balloons 🤣. We’ll see … it looks like you won the AC. In every case congratulations bacause uiu are strong to be an arabic emirates team. 👏👏👏👏 bravi! 🤣
I do not get the rules. Emirates cut the way of Luna Rossa and Luna Rossa get the penalty. When Luna ROssa did exactly the same, they got the penalty again.
You need to read up on the rules and watch more match racing. Then, they will become apparent. Luna Rossa pushed to the limit of the laws and, unfortunately, cross them. Hence Penalties. Apart from that best race of the Regatta.
23:54 you can here the pain of that penalty. Starts with f ends with uck. Great race tho. I can't wait for these two to battle it out for the auld mug. ( Such a pity we didnt get this day 1 when lrpp had that systems shutdown)
22:22 you know it's a dodgy call when Glenn Ashby,AC winner with NZ, says the Kiws are vulnerable and doesn't understand why the Italians were penalized...
Luna Rosa ia good team..and also faster boàt. If New Zealand make lots of mistakes at the final Luna Rosa win the Americans Cup. I hope BURLING and Learn a lots and prepare well for the final. ,🙏🙏🙏🙏♥️💙💛💚👍👍👍👍✋✋✋✋
I miss the days of real sailing yachts with crews handling the sheets, deploying and stowing spinnakers on the downwind legs. Not computer and hydraulically driven aquatic formula 1 cars where more often than not whoever leads at the start wins. Let's have actual regatta's where it's more than just a one-on-one.
LR are so fast in those conditions. It seems that they could have sailed around ETNZ. ETNZ have a lot to do before the finals. LR, USA and Ineos will be match hardened come the finals.
@@matthewleet9882 I'm hoping so too. There's every chance they are holding sleeves and playing cat n mouse, for sure If this showing is pure honesty then gains definitely need to be made
I rewatched it now second time. First time I had the same impression. But after second time, it seemed to me that they were pretty solid. In the east breeze it seems that it is much more complicated to bet on your wheels and just chip away. But covering and making an extra tacks is very costly. Lets see how those inverted foils will be performing with a light air and waves later on, especially when one need to do an extra double tack, exiting an unsuccessful lee-bow. Impressive to watch overall!
Wow, if this is anything to go by, Italy are going to be the challengers for the America's Cup once again. They were penalized 3 times in this grand final race though, or they probably should have won. New Zealand had a reasonably healthy lead after Italy were penalized before the start line, but Italy kept chipping away at it well. I'd actually book Italy as favorites. to take both cups.
The audio track is still way to mixed and jumbled. Remove the "commentators" completely (they don't have anything useful to add, except for announcing penalties, lets be honest), and we'll have a much better show.
Very small mistakes apart from the last one where LR should have tacked away earlier. It really comes down to the umpires giving penalties for pretty tiny diamond infringements. However LR got 1 penalty, got behind NZL more than 400m, then came back with a vengeance, overtook NZL, took another penalty, overtook NZL again and took again the final penalty that put an end to the regatta. Who was faster today?
Who was faster today? The boat crossing the finish line first.Obviously. Spithill is the Max Vesrpatten of sailing. Good, but not the best. Takes too many unmanageable risks, the kind that if it works you are a hero, if it does not you are a fool. I think he has fallen into the fools column one too many times. I have followed AC racing for decades and that boy makes some highly questionable decisions at the most inopportune times. At this level you either are a complete skipper ( and in my humble there is only one complete skipper: Peter Burling ) or you will be tasting dirty air when the chips are down. If you look at Burling's face and body language you see a skipper who knows what is ahead and has already planned for that event. Every other skipper is sitting at the edge of his knowledge base, trying to make the best "guess". The difference between Team New Zealand and the others is simple. The other teams are racing against TNZ .TNZ races against itself. To deny what you have seen with your own eyes and blame the penalties for LR's shortcomings in their race planning and execution while negating TNZ's record setting performance in disingenuous at best. Surely, without the penalties this would have been a very closer race and LR could have very well won it but, this is something we will never know since the race is OVER and already on the books . TNZ won.Spithill performed the greatest comeback in sailing history according to many. Regardless of what is said and done and all the allegations of cheating on the part of Team Oracle, the political pressures of not losing the "Americas Cup" at home - unthinkable - and all conspiracy theories surrounding that event... it is OVER. The moment is gone. Since that day way back in 2013, Mr, Spithill still has not (imho) shed the weight of that "comeback" and is racing a ghost while being schooled by Burling & Co over and over again. May the winds be in his favor...finally.
Was luna Rosa faster or were the kiwis using this preliminary race as a hard practice and letting them past , that is the question. Luna Risa passed them twice but the kiwis still won right so that means the kiwis passed them 3 times to win Once at the start and 2 more times during the race . Hmmm who was faster eh??
Rules say that a boat cannot turn in front of another boat "inside his wather" (of navigation). NZ turning in front of LR, penalty for LR. Judges today showed well why NZ was capable to hold the Cup so much time.
Was tnz on port tack, so that gives them right of way , luna Rosa was suppose to give way under the rules and did it to late and I think tnz turned towards them outside the safety distance as well. If so penalty was Lunas fault for not turning away quicker.
@@brettmciver432 As soon as you start tacking you loose the "right of way". Luna rossa had to bear away because ETNZ finished the tack too close. What else could LR do? On the other hand, the second penalty was fair. LR was too late in keeping clear
@andreaschneider6001 Tnz had finished the tack way before so again luna Rissa just ballsed up the right of way rule and left it to late . Both were correct.

Trumpian comment. If you had the faster boat, how about managing it better so you are not violating the rules? Ever count how many penalties LR's team has had over the time Spithill has been at the helm? The guy sometimes seems to be completely unaware. Wanna win races? Get a real skipper.
