I befriended him either in late '72. Spent a lot of time with him in his Studio - the original one. Played his drums, his piano, and he actually wanted to write a song with me - but I was too shy or not ready to do that. I kept in touch with him over the years - traded Christmas cards. And last saw him in early June, 1995. He touched a lot of people and influenced them too. I always wanted to do a band with him playing those old songs but I lived in New York and he lived in LA.

I wandered into the cafetorium at NVCC (Northern Virginia Community College) in '69 or '70 to get a cup of coffee and this guy was setting up in the overlook type balcony and started singing. There was a flyer on the table - 'Emitt Rhodes tomorrow' with a picture of him. I looked up, and there he was. Refreshing songs with Beatleish kind of of thoughts and sounds. Bought a couple of his albums, and played them for awhile. But never saw another one. Often wondered what happened to him until I stumbled on to this page. Thanks for this.

I'm always sad when a favorite artist dies but the death of Emitt Rhodes is especially difficult. I think it has to do with the sad story of his struggles with his record label and his difficulties with depression and diabetes. He carried a sadness in him for many years and it is heartbreaking to see such a gifted talent enduring so much pain. I do hope he is in a better and happier place now but it is very difficult for us fans who love and appreciate his music.

Yep. As hard as the loss of Jim Croce or Buddy Holly, for sure.

I agree. I'm having a real hard time with it. The strange part is I suddenly called him on Fri. July 17th, about 2 days before he passed and left a message. I should have called back. 😢

Hmm, wow. My friends and I, students at Lakewood High School and members of the garage band The Flipside, had the pleasure of seeing The Merry-Go-Round at Melodyland in Anaheim, across the street from Disneyland, on a Saturday evening, April 8, 1967 (tickets for reserved seating were $2.50), with the NItty Gritty Dirt Band (headliner), The Music Machine, The Yellow Balloon, and The Knack. I was 16. The Merry-Go-Round was great. I loved their songs "Live" and "You're a Very Lovely Woman," IMO, worth enough to buy a cup of joe, two of the best pop songs released in the 1960s, which I heard for the first time on the Big 11-10, KRLA Pasadena, my favorite AM radio station in the Los Angeles area. Magical musical memories still turning in the windmills of my mind. Musically speaking, "You're a Very Lovely Woman" still turns me on, 53 years after its release. Emitt Rhodes, Bill Rinehart, rest in peace.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your amazing memory. I often wish I had been born in the 50's so I could have seen the bands you mentioned, especially The Merry-Go-Round and The Music Machine. The Yellow Balloon was cool too, I really like their song "Good Feeling Time". I know Melodyland was just east of Disneyland but I never got the chance to visit. Emitt Rhodes was a truly gifted person and he will continue to bring much joy to many of us for years to come.

Fresh As A Daisy is the perfect single of its day. Should have been a worldwide hit. That bad management and deaf radio management strikes again. Ever a Find Yourself Running hints at a more serious genuine talent.

I just discovered Emitt Rhodes earlier this year (2021), instantly fell in love with his early music (The Beatles, and especially Paul are far and away my favorite artists). I also love some of the songs on his last album. He had a wonderful voice when he was in his younger years, but it may have gotten better and richer in his latest years! "Dog on a Chain" - OMG. And then after searching for more, I quickly discovered that he passed away in 2020. My heart aches because of it. If he were still alive, I would take a pilgrimage to his home for just a chance to meet him. His musical legacy can't help but positively influence my own songwriting going forward. I miss you Emitt and you will forever be remembered by me.

can't believe so few comments. I discovered that 1970 album of his maybe 8 years later when I was about 16. Seemed like every song was written for me. I thought it also sounded like rare lost beatle work. either way, it was magical, and still is. i think it's cool that he's not well known, relatively speaking. also, that he's more known than I thought before. great pics...thanks much for the information and feelings. peace.

Unfortunately, I had never heard of Emitt Rhodes until after he died and saw some RU-vid posts about his death and music. I did not start seriously listening to music until about 1974 so I just missed out on his early work. Everything that I've listened to on RU-vid by him has been great. Mystery that he is so overlooked. I posted something about him on Facebook, but hardly anyone commented. RIP Emitt Rhodes.

Like everyone, I thank you for this unique video. I became a fan when I heard You're a Very lovely Woman on a Chicago radio station in 1967 when I was starting at Northwestern.I got his debut solo LP as soon as I heard She's Such a Beauty on the radio. Emitt was a remarkably talented singer-songwriter. I will never understand how he got overlooked in the 70's but I'm glad for the albums he made. Someone needs to post more of Farewell To Paradise.

I discovered him as a pre-teen in the late 60s when he made his first solo record. It was one of my favorites and one reason I liked it was because no one had ever heard of him. He was a real talent even back then in an era that was filled with it and that was before I heard all the Merry Go Round songs which I now see make his eventual obscurity even more of a waste. I am glad to discover he made fans of so many people--then and now--and I have the feeling his music will live again, as deserved.

Emitt Rhodes was my cousin of my. If he didn't sign a bad contract, he would had a lot of songs released. I was there that day his publisher shows up that he trusted came when he was trying a new song, and sign the the bad contract. He tried to sing after the contract was void, which 10 year, but it didn't fan out.

I heard "Live" when it came out on the radio on the East coast and "Very Lovely Woman" as well,but it was 1n 2004 I was given a copy of "Live" and enjoyed it! But year or so ago,I found a mint vinyl "Live" LP. Wow,great record. Now I can dig a little deeper into Emitt's music,thanks to the Internet.
@bellinghammond
@bellinghammond 2 года назад
"Hooray, the Lord is good to His children" What's sad about older Emitt was he couldn't take the lyrical advice of his younger self and "Live"..."Live Till You Die". If i had a time machine I would go back and ask him "If Paul McCartney had received only a minimal amount of fame, how would you feel about HIM packing it in, out of professional disappointment?". I'd encourage him to realize that people blessed with a Gift bear a certain responsibility to USE that Gift (especially, if one considers oneself an "Artist") no matter what happens. Sometimes fame builds slowly (Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed), sometimes it never comes...beyond that, the 'angels' are ALWAYS listening, and for them we must always sing. Pictures bring back thoughts and things from the past Memories they last even though time it will pass For memories are real when there is nothing more Whenever you're bored and there's nothing to live for. Come ride, come ride, come ride up and down The merry-go, merry-go-round. An old man he sits and he rocks in his chair Waiting to die, the boy starts to cry but the man he cannot 'Cause he's lived far too long and there is nothing left Visions of youth and he serves no more use than a book on the shelf. Life is sweet when you've lost all your fear Death it is near, your cares they will disappear So you sit and remember the gay laughing sound The ups and the downs of your ride on the merry-go-round. Come ride, come ride, come ride up and down The merry-go, merry-go-round.
