I haven't watched any of the movie adaptions yet, but having read the book, I have to say Emma's father was very much written as a caricature by Jane Austen. Having said that though, I am curious to check this adaption out, if it is a faithful as you say. Kate Beckinsale seems a better choice to me than Gwyneth Paltrow.

After I saw Mark Strong in the Kings Service movie I knew he seemed familiar, it was this Emma that I first saw him. Have you seen Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day? Mark Strong with another look, still great.

I hated this version when I first saw it. It's still my least favourite, but it's grown on me over time and I rewatch it at about the same rate as the other four Emma adaptations that I know about. I am starting to get fond of it.

I agree. Emma is my favorite Jane Austen story followed by Pride and Prejudice. I also like the 2009 production with Ramola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller. It was a great adaptation and it was in episodes so they included more of the story! Love it!

The novels you cited have more social or political references woven into the story, class inequalities, slavery and social injustice, virtue versus vice, a life of the mind versus idleness and frivolity... The newest version with Bill Nighy is unique and good

Emma is my favourite of Jane Austin's books. I think it is because the character of Emma is quite modern, in the sense that we can recognise aspects of her character in ourselves or friends. Some of Jane's other heroines, whilst very virtuous, are less relatable. The book is fascinating because we realise how self aware Emma is of her flaws and at times very uncomfortable about them. Then at other times completely oblivious. This doesn't always come across in the adaptations. In some adaptations you are lead to believe she just thinks she's always right. My favourite part of the book is a section not shown in this particular adaption (but is in some of the others) where she is waiting for an invite to an evening engagement to arrive, so that she can turn it down. Her thought processes whilst she's waiting always make me smile.

​@@bastianleejones When you remember that people rarely lived past their 50s in the Georgian Era and women were lucky to reach 40, you *have* to throw away the modern notion that people under 18 are children. Poor children were working as soon as 7 or 8 and some even younger, Middle class girls were looking for the security of marriage from 14 up (and were considered rather elderly for marriage by 27) because an advantageous marriage was for many the only way to avoid poverty unless they had rich relations on whom they could depend. The alternatives for a woman in Georgian society would most likely cost them their good name and respectability For a rich young woman like Emma, she was in a unique position, as she was an heiress in her own right and it would actually be to her disadvantage to marry as all she owned would become her husbands property. She is unable to properly relate to the awkward financial/Social positions of those around her because she doesnt realise what a desperate struggle it is for everyone else around her to enjoy the security and ease she takes so much for granted without another thought. Eventually she realises that even she herself is only really secure if she marries a reliable man who has no need to chase her personal fortune, so if she marries at all. there is only really Mr Knightley

I believe Jane Austen herself said she didn't expect anyone to like the character Emma except herself. People at the time were used to the perfect heroine with no faults. 😄

I usually give any Movie 30 minutes to catch my attention, but only 15 for the main character. Emma quickly caught my attention‼️I didn't care for her at all, which confused me. We always love 💕 Ms. Austen's Heroines. What was I overlooking? "Marianne" in S&S wasn't the "Heroin" of course, but even though she had her moments of insensitivity, we never disliked her. Elinor ~ the rock & anchor wasn't ever a doormat. We understood why Elinor was who she was. But Emma ~ I didn't "forgive" Emma until the final 15 minutes and it was only from seeing her through Mr. Knightly 🎩eyes❣️ No doubt about it "Sunnygem21", I've got to read the 📖 Book😊

Not that big of a deal. My dad was 10 years older than my mom so tchnically he could have held her as a baby, and he was 10 or 11, though it did not happen that way. Mr.Knightly is just relaying a memory and possibly they are both enjoying the fact that they have been a part of eachother's lives all this time and are amazed and gladdened that it has turned out that their feelings have blossomed into a romantic situation. It is NOT like he has incestuous feelings at all and it doesn't come across that way. Minds out of the gutter please.

You must try to understand that this idea that an older man and a younger woman means _de facto_ the man is creepy and controlling is simply a modern feminist construct. Until this modern feminist nonsense it was common for a man to be older, not unusual at all. It was also not a reflection on him as some kind of misogynist. To understand this, you don't need to turn only to statistics, If you watch old movies and there is some mention of age somewhere you will see how utterly normal it was. An example is Service for Ladies staring Leslie Howard. When the woman is introduced we understand she is 20. Later in the film, the Leslie Howard character writes his details down on a hotel register. He writes 35. Let this be a lesson in how these modern feminists have re-written the past so it supports their narrative. They have also manipulated people's minds so instead of seeing the older man as desirable, he is seen as perv^rted. Therefore, instead of seeing this as a beautiful romance women get sickened. It is mind manipulation and it is happening everywhere. For example, The modern Netflix Rebecca is awful. Many WOKE controlled programmes are not altered for reasons of the creativity of the piece, but because they want political control. In Rebecca Maxim de Winter is supposed to be 41 and the girl about 19. They have cast actors that look the same age. It gets worse. The girl goes out with Maxim and instead of conversation they have s^x on a public beach. This is not only highly unlikely at the time the piece is set, it is completely wrong for the entire storyline. I don't know if you are familiar with either the book or the wonderful film staring Sir Lawrence Olivier and Joan Fontaine? He falls in love with her because she is innocent and wholesome - the very antithesis of Rebecca. The entire plotline depends on this and the feminist Netflix production totally destroys it. feminists have warped ideas about marriage. They think you need to try the person out se^ually or how could you marry them? The divorce statistics with s^xual problems being one of the highest reasons given for the divorce doesn't exactly back them up. Frankly, if you want to feel sick about something, be creeped out by how successful WOKE feminists have been in manipulating public opinion. Oh, and watch the Olivier/Fontaine Rebecca. It is a wonderful film.

A 10 year age difference isn't weird in a historical setting, or even a modern one. Without birth control, a man might have to support 6-10 children, which tends to promote later marriages. He has to be settled enough in his profession that he is earning well, or if inheriting, he'll be older because he doesn't inherit until his father or uncle passes. Holding her as a baby is just a reflection on the close ties of affection between the two families.

Me too, and I like Kate B. more than Gwenyth P , but when I was reading de book, what apear in my mind was Genyth Paltrow's Emna, in my opinion she captured more the ingenuity of a spoiled girl even in her voice . I love to watch both versions.

Update: Yeah, not my favorite. Talented performances, but everything felt so abbreviated! No scene was allowed to develop the depth it should have and it flitted through the story so quickly that it just felt very “spark notes-y.” Dialogue was very expositional. I just feel like this version displayed the facts about the story without any of the humor or heart. I thought the actors did a good job; I’ve just got beef with the writing.

I differ. The concept of love itself varies from person to person. I'm deep into the type of love where you have the deepest friendship, yet not good enough to show or sometimes even oblivious of your own feelings.
