Jane Austen's beloved comedy about finding your equal and earning your happy ending is reimagined in this delicious new film adaptation of Emma. Handsome, clever and rich, Emma Woodhouse (Thoroughbreds' Anya Taylor-Joy) is a restless "queen bee" without rivals in her sleepy little English town. In this glittering satire of social class, Emma must navigate her way through the challenges of growing up, misguided matches and romantic missteps to realize the love that has been there all along.

I didn’t care much for the pastel look of everything, as people wore vivid dark colors even then, and the houses at the time showed that style. But, the clothes were fantastic is silhouette and trend!
@tamaracarter1836
@tamaracarter1836 4 года назад
@@Udontkno7 Well the interiors of Wilton house (pictured at 5:22) cannot be described as pastel, look at the Baroque “Double Cube Room” (decorated in 1653) at 6:09, or the “Single Cube Room” (decorated at some point between 1630-1645) straight after - not forgetting the two rooms before that: “the Colonnade Room” and “Great Anteroom” (although you couldn’t really see much of them). However the orange cloisters did fit the time period/ films aesthetic (having been installed around 1810). The houses/ people of the time definitely retained older styles, look at what was used to depict Rosings Park in the 2005 adaption of Pride and Prejudice; the Renaissance Burghley House (built 1555-1587), along with some of the Baroque interiors such as the “Heaven Room” (decorated in 1690), even Lady Catherine de Bourgh herself wore clothes/ hair of an older age. So of course not everything will have been redecorated in the Regency style, but I think it was important for the film to show strong attributes of the period in order to convey it successfully to the audience - plus I really loved the colours!

I had the feeling when I rented this movie that as much as I like Anya Taylor-Joy I don't think she carried this film well enough to compensate for some of the more boring parts. She was not portrayed as likable enough to offset her annoying petulance. In other versions we know she is somewhat a snob but she is also innocent enough in her high mindedness to be forgiven. In this version, she fails to be likable and one wonders what Mr. Knightly could possibly see in her. I didn't see any chemistry between the two and Johnny Flynn seems an unlikely admirer. and vice verse. I blame the director as all the characters are good actors but this version was not a good one and the gratuitous nude scene ridiculous and cringe-worthy...wrong parade.

@jaimeguerrero7320
@jaimeguerrero7320 4 года назад
I have studied fashion plates and extant garments from the period this film, and thereby the novel, is set in (around 1815); while I am no expert, I can guarantee this is the most accurate depiction of the Regency costume I have seen in any Jane Austen adaptation. Emma's spencer (the pink jacket she wears during the wedding) is actually based off of a spencer in the Churtsey Museum collection (although the collar has been greatly simplified). The sheer top she wears over her dress in the opening scene is a canezou, examples of which can be seen in a number of paintings from the time. In the last scene in this clip, Emma wears a coral bodice over her dress, which is in fact copied from a painting. In one scene from the movie, she wears a ballgown that is an almost exact replica of one in the V&A Museum from 1810. I do not see where you got the 1830s from, as 1830s fashion is wildly different from the fashions shown in this film, especially the silhouette. While the costume designer did take some liberties; i.e., regarding the occasion for which various ensembles were worn and the number of bonnets Emma owns, I can say with almost absolute certainty that this movie is a shining example of how accurate costuming can enhance a film without sacrificing artistic liberties.

Jane Austen intended for Emma to be unlikable at the beginning. This adaptation does a great job at showing how Emma starts off as self-satisfied and manipulative (as much as she doesn't try to be) and grows to be more responsible and understanding. As for the mannerisms; the cast had to go through training and rehearsals in order to act in accordance with the manners and behavior expected at the time, so for the most part, how they behave is completely historically accurate.
@Sarana.
@Sarana. 4 года назад
I agree with the earlier comments; Jane Austen herself described Emma as a heroine no one but her would like. And like someone said before, people don’t change, just our interpretations and ideas of what people must’ve been like change as they are often romanticised through time. Saying that we watch period dramas to escape the way modern people act only “adds force to my argument” to quote Emma 2009.

The sexuaisation may seem unAustenian, but only, i think, because of our own vision of what sexualisation might have been in that era. Austen's writing was meant to thrill the audience of her times. @ashazeal
@ashazeal 4 года назад
actually if you had researched or thought a bit about the director's intentions the dressing scene was used to show the uncomfortable nature of the clothing of the time and also start your perception of the character from an intimate 'no facades' place. also putting a spin on the fact that womens body are most objectified and it would usually be the classic 'woman getting dressed and put together' instead it was a man. So yeah a little bit more than just 'eye candy'.

@@jodybrauner9790 Austen said that no one would like Emma, she didn't want her to be likable. This Emma is expressive and vulnerable too but I don't think comparing her to Garai's portrayal is a good argument because that version isn't accurate. The actress was so exaggeratedly expressive sometimes she seemed giddy and her posture was faulty. Emma has a happy disposition but she's refined and well-behaved so while annoying her arrogance towards others makes sense for someone like her. The series catered to a modern audience so they chose to make Emma more likable so that you blame her flaws on her being a 'child'. She isn't really humbled in the end if she's nice from the start. No wonder why some hate Knightley: how can they really get he's right when he argues with her when it seems like she's just a misunderstood victim.

For me, she is the worst choice for the character of "Emma". You could never compare her with the brilliant performance of Romola Garai, who played the part in 2009. Yes, "Emma" is posh and snobbish, but never arrogant or coldhearted, like Taylor Joy portrays her. I could hardly watch her act...!

The movie was made in a format with camera and film that give higher resolution image, so the original record has a sharper and more vivid look, whether you see it in the theater, on DVD, or digital.This movie is loosely based on the Jane Austen book, but purposely adds many themes from modern perspective. See some interviews with the director which explain this. One example, in the movie Emma goes to visit Harriet Smith where Harriet lives. In the book, that never happened. There is a theme of breaking class division. I do not recall ever reading in Austen's books, any scene of a couple kissing. But this movie has such scenes Certainly Jane Austen never wrote anything close to the scene in which Mr Knightly is getting dressed.And the scenes which have dancing, which in the movie last several minutes and the characters display a lot of wordless expression and body language -- how could any of that be Jane Austen's book.And of course, Jane Austen had no music to her books. They were just words on paper. This movie uses music extensively, to add humor, sarcasm, and direct the audience attention to the actors' body language. A lot of the movie scenes involve the expression on characters faces. Extremely visual.

_And the scenes which have dancing, which in the movie last several minutes and the characters display a lot of wordless expression and body language -- how could any of that be Jane Austen's book._ Answer: easily. Dances turn up in more than half of Jane Austen's published stories, and they usually are crucial to the plot of the character development. And yes, it is quite possible to describe body language, looks, impressions and so on on paper, and to do it well. Don't take it from me, you can read Mansfield Park, or Pride and Prejudice, or Emma, or Northanger Abbey ... it's not so pronounced in Sense and Sensibility, but it's there, too. Use of body language and facial expressions turns up all over the place in Jane Austen's stories. What the point of the added nudity was - I have no clue. To make it look modern, or risqué, or daring? Gettting-dressed scenes can be great to give us a look into the world a character inahbits - see the "dangerous liaisons" movie with Michelle Pfeiffer. In this one? _Oh look, a naked bottom._ Also, I just learned that both romantic leads have something in common: they are bottle blond and get dressed in the morning. Clearly, they are made for each other! No seriously: those two scenes looked suspiciously like somebody had decided that the movie nees to have something that sets it apart from a few dozen other Jane Austen adaptations, and it was that or slaughtering a pig on-screen. I agree that the movie is extremely visual, but that kind of comes with being a movie. I just wish the director had relied on the movie being so very visual and tuned down the music, because that comes along like a sledge hammer, trying to point out how funny, ironic or entertaining something is. All in all, this movie feels like the director didn't even expect the viewers to pay attention, so he made all the characters so in-your-face vapid, full of themself, silly that you won't miss it even if the movie runs in the background while you're playing Forge of Empires.

Jane Austen has a great many references to specific music in all her novels; fewer perhaps in Northanger Abbey.
