Great mattress review(s). Subscribed. I’m in the market for a new mattress. I appreciate all the variances and how hard it is to make personal recommendations so I don’t expect one. I’m 50 years old, 76kg, 176cm/5’9”, have a prolapsed disk, mainly side, some back sleeping. I like the look of this Emma original (2nd gen) but would definitely consider adding a topper for more comfort/less pushback as you suggest in the video and I would be interested to know if you could recommend a topper for this mattress specifically or just your preferred topper in general. Cheers. BTW, some positive feedback on your review style: one thing I really appreciate is that you don’t vocalise asking your viewers to subscribe, (which can get old really quickly!), you just have text after the review has been completed. Maybe a minor point but one that makes a big difference IMO.

Great review as always. After weeks of researching and watching almost all of your videos I'm still not sure. 90% side sleeper about 14.5 stone. Partner also a side sleeper but a lot lighter. I do have one shoulder with a few past muscle injuries that aches every now and then. Leaning towards Casper but some reviews state it's not got enough give for side sleepers. Any loose recommendations? Will try simba in my local John Lewis as well.
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
how old are the casper reviews? the latest version is softer and fine for side sleepers i would have said. Of course it will still feel firmer to your partner than it will to you. Leesa, simba, casper and Emma hybrid are all similar firmness with perhaps simba and leesa having less pushback. Beware trying a showroom mattress because it will be well worn in and feel softer than yours will when you get it. You cant outright say any mattress doesn't have enough give for side sleepers because it totally depends on your weight. If you are really heavy a firmer mattress may well be fine. However the four i mentioned will all feel similar at the shoulder.

Thabks for your reviews, they're very helpful... but I still haven't got a clue - There are so many mattresses to consider! I'm around 118 kg and sleep on my front. I get a bit of lower back pain - I don't know if it's caused by my current mattress but it's 5 years old and given that I used to be even heavier, its probably knackered. My budget is up to £700, which mattress do you reckon would be best for me?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
back ache and sleep on front, bing! front sleeping is awful it is the biggest cause of back and neck issues. In terms of mattresses you are on the edge of maximum weight for many of them. that really only leaves Otty and Emma original of the ones i have tested and firm enough. I would suggest otty would be a reasonable first try. Be prepared to go through a few options till you get it right. This is why i only review the 100 night trial ones.

Superb reviews Alan and you really helped educate more than anything for my selection of mattress. A really difficult decision. I've ended up with the Which? best buy of 2017 - The SilentNight Studio Medium. On their 2018 test, it's still a best buy although only just beaten by this Emma for some 2% of "ease of use". I missed out on this confusingly named Emma because it came in too late. To be honest I would have perceived this Emma original to be softer than their hybrid (according to previous Which? results) yet you confirm this is not the case. It was an initial brief showroom test that originally gave me fancy toward memory foam like a Tempur mattress which seemed to sink and hug beautifully but far too expensive to even consider compared to all these new boxed babies. So i set out to try to find a comparable boxed one with similar qualities. Not sure i have though as the sink and hug i feel at the moment doesn't seem to compare directly to a Tempur as such. I'm pleased to learn these things soften up though as what i have i would say is actually on the firmer side. Ironically i found the smell of mine to actually be an attractive feature. It seemed really fresh and made the whole bedroom smell totally new like a showroom. The smell actually seemed to help send me to sleep. Unfortunately it's now decreasing somewhat as it becomes aired. Incredibly, Which? rated the most expensive Tempur mattress the worst on test. I still wonder what you'd consider to be the closest any of these come to that 'Tempur' sink feel. Even their firmest seems to sink and 'hug' way beyond anything else I've tried (but have never slept on)..
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
Thanks for the feedback. Its more confusing because not only did Emma change the names around but the Emma Hybrid actually was called the Emma Original so reviews will use that name and you will have no idea which one they are talking about without knowing the date of review. Another problem with simply going by Which reviews is that these mattresses evolve and keep their name, take Eve for example, its been 5 different configurations some of which only involved changing the type of foam so you would have no idea it happened. The mattress market is all over the place and is the very reason is set out to make detailed reviews and cut out the marketing speech. The confusion over which Emma is firmer is made worse because some Emma support staff seem confused on this themselves and say the original is softer than the hybrid seemingly just because it has zoning. I wouldn’t compare any of them to a tempur because most of them cant match the densities tempur use. A good way to check this is comparing mattress weights but even this is very inaccurate on may websites. The sink and hug feel is down to the amount and softness of comfort layers. Again something you get much more of on many tempurs. Personally I nearly always use a topper because I like more comfort layer before hitting the support layers. Smell is not good, its chemicals, I sometimes like the smell of fresh paint but its pure chmicals you are breathing in, not good. VOCs. My best advice is try a topper on a firm mattress and you will get that sinking in feel. But you will have to research toppers now ha! There are better online mattresses out there (on paper) that I haven’t reviewed yet because costs are limiting what I can do. They all soften up, lower density will soften up sooner. What you don’t want is a big difference between how it softens up under the pressure areas compared to the rest of the mattress. You can try walking on the mattress for 30 minites a day for the first 30 days (no joke) to help give even softening up.
@macutmore
@macutmore 5 лет назад
Brilliant advice. I got such a good deal on mine albiet forsaking full manufacturers return ability somewhat although neither here nor there compared to what i was sleeping on previous (a far too soft old Christie Tyler spring based job), so a fantastic improvement overall. (That said it has taken two months to get used to with two episodes of stiff necks that went with differing pillow heights). Strangely didn't notice temperature issues during the intense summer yet now notice heat build up on underlay somewhat more as autumn approaches. Will try a memory foam topper perhaps. Loving a good nights sleep, Would certainly love to be in your position of having so many seemingly lying around to choose from! Lol. Which by the way is your personal favourite? I perceive it to be the Otty perhaps?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
not otty, otty has a place though with its combination of bounce and deep support. My go to would be Casper or Emma Hybrid without a topper or with a topper any of the firmer ones like otty and eve work fine.
@macutmore
@macutmore 5 лет назад
Interesting perception after trying out virtually all of the few well know Bed showrooms, (almost none of which commonly stock such boxed mattresses, indeed the very mention of which was usually reacted to like out and out disdain), is that these could or actually already be disrupting their 'high street industry'. What with the exuberant prices of Beds themselves and the fact that not everyone would want a complete Bed makes them increasingly attractive. This thought was categorically denied by one salesperson who was in total denial that 'internet shopping and supply' was in any way detriment to their great sales figures or the very existence of their already longstanding experienced bedding supply career within a departmental store that likely already has other profit issues. Thanks again Alan for your excellent detailed hugely educational reviews.

Hi Alan, Great reviews, they are really helpful. Having said that, I am still unsure what to get. I am a side sleeper, about 14st. My gf is lighter but also a side sleeper. I prefer a slightly firmer mattress, however don't want to go too firm (like the eve for example) as there would be too much pressure at the shoulder etc. I was thinking about the Casper, however you have recently mentioned this has got softer. I am also aware that all these mattresses get softer over time, so might need to get a firmer one initially!? Any advice?! Also, have you tested any of the Mammoth mattresses? Would something like one of those (which are suppose to be of a higher quality) last longer?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
of the ones i have tried Otty and Emma Original are the ones between the Casper (softer) and Eve (firmer), but my eve was the old version. They have now flipped top layers and added zoning so it may actually be softer now. Funilly enough someone was just pointing me to the tweak mattresses one of which is the duo where you can have different firmness on each half. Personally at 13 stone the new Casper is pretty nice to sleep on for me, but maybe just a tad on the soft side. Sorry not tried the mammoth mattress. They do sveral so not sure which one you are after and some are quite pricey, but yes pricey for a reason.
@jameswyatt5036
@jameswyatt5036 5 лет назад
thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! Yeah, I saw that the Eve have added zoning and might be a little softer, which would be great. The Emma original does sound appealing and by the sounds of it, its more durable. As a side a sleeper, the Casper might be best, but don't want it to get softer, meaning it wouldn't last very long! Probably the Mammoth fastrack 22, as its the cheapest of the company. On the whole, price normally means quality!

durability is the big question with these mattresses thats true, only this original seems to make a play of it with some testing to back it up. Hard to tell just what that mattress is from the specs. Lookign at the weights it justs says 30kg no matter what size you select.

After an unnecessarily long explanation at the open 'Hybrid, Original, Original, Hybrid' etc etc, this eventually turned out to be a good video, full of useful information. Of particular interest was your comment about getting a slightly firmer mattress than is comfortable, stating that the mattress will eventually soften and fall within your comfort zone. I tested some Silent Night Studio mattresses which are currently offered in 3 levels of firmness and I was slightly in favour of the medium level over the firm option. Your comment may shift my perspective on this.

this is one of the things that catches most people out. They expect the mattress on day one will be the same as 60 days on and judge it on day one. Hi Mate, Really struggling here… been listening to a number of your mattress reviews over and over again while at work…trying to figure out which to order first time round without needing to waste time returning it. My wife is a front and side sleeper, but I’m a back and side sleeper with lower back issue. I’m stuck between Leesa and Emma, with Nectar unlikely because it seems like it’s too soft for a front sleeper? Emma at the moment I can get at £400 and Leesa at £450 Double mattress. I know you normally recommend Leesa for most sleeping positions, but would Emma work better for low back problem, as well as accommodating a front sleeper? Also, considering the small price difference. Also, I heard that Emma, from other reviews, that if the mattress is too soft or firm they send you out a topper for free, this something you’ve heard before.
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 4 года назад
a lot of companies do the topper thing, but bear in mind the quality and thickness of the topper you will get. It can make a small difference but its not going to be a quality topper. You dont mention your weights. You have an issue here given your sleeping styles. Leesa original is more of a middle ground and may be a better trade-off but only you can know for sure by trying. Emma may be slightly on the firm side for side sleeping and back depending on your back issue. If you are on the heavier side then emma may be the better option. what have you been happy with in the past?

Alan Ross Reviews Hi we have a fantastic silent night pocket spring chantilly mattress, but it’s too small as only a double. And will a foam mattress ever be as as good as as an really well built but pricey Silent night ? Excellent review by the way
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
there is no such thing as saying is a mattress too firm or soft because it will different depending on your weight and preference. Generally the lighter you are the softer you want a mattress. So i could say emma hybrid may be too soft for 16 stone back sleepers but if you are 11 stone it could be just right. You have to match the feel to both your body and your preference. Personally at 13 stone emma hybrid is quite comfy, only slightly too soft for me. Silent night still use foam over the springs. An all foam mattress will probably soften up quicker than a silent night spring mattress. The emma hybrid wont feel like a full size pocket spring mattress btw, they are mini springs. What weight are you and what firmness are you after?

Thank you for the reply. We are a young couple with no back issues etc im around 12stone and my wife is 11stone. We both sleep on our sides , we are really happy with our silent night , and would order another one but not sure a super king size will fit up our staircase also it was ridiculously expensive. Also our standard double is incredibly heavy and doesnt bend , i cant imagine how awkward and heavy a super king would be. A bed in a box that is light seems a revolution in mattress design , but are their to many drawbacks i wonder.
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
ah! its more of a revolution for pile em high sell them cheap than any advancement is bed tech. Yes its a convenient way to have a mattress delivered. The flip side is some will argue you are compromising the foam by flat packing it like that. These mattresses offer value for money and easy returns for trials etc but they are not high end mattresses as the marketing may suggest. Not the ones i have reviewed so far anyway. Longevity may be an issue with some of these mattresses, some more than others, online research will help point the way. It is no coincidence that companies are reluctant to let me have a mattress for review and the fact that i explain all the technical aspects. Only Leesa, Bruno and Emma have let me have a mattress with no input on what i say, you can draw your own conclusion on that ;) As side sleepers you need a softer feel, i would say Leesa and Emma Hybrid may be on the right lines.

In case you get feedback from Europe saying this mattress is soft, the German version of the Emma Original is very different, top two layers add up to 8cm and lots more zoning so it’s much softer (apparently even softer than Leesa) but same name... just to add confusion 🤔

Hi Alan, I’ve watch so many videos of yours and still so confused. I know you are not a doctor but your advice will be much appreciated please. I have back problems: scoliosis and lordosis. I sleep on my sides and on my back. I weight 48kg. I don’t mind between memory form or hybrid. Which mattress would you suggest for me please? Thank you 😊
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 4 года назад
if you can handle the heat issues memory foam is normally a pain friendly pressure point friendly way to go. keep in mind memory foam requires body heat and if your room is cold and you have thick blankets and thus heat doesnt get to the foam it will tend to feel on the firm side. there is no easy answer due to many factors involved but generally memory foam is the way to go. Perhaps a look at the nectar and maybe still think about a memory foam topper. you want a softer feel memory foam so not just any memory foam mattress due to your light weight and side sleeping.

Will a hybrid work for me or just memory foam?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 4 года назад
@@annandareis if you mean hybrid as in pocket springs i would avoid that because of the push back. If you was on the heavy side it would be different

Thanks again Alan! One more question: I’ve seen some mattresses with 8 cm memory foam on top of the pocket sprung instead of placed beneath them. Is that any better in term of push back?

@@annandareis sure but pocket springs are about deep down support, at your weight you are just not going to benefit imho.

@@lynn4773 yes as a light side sleeper I would say softer is better but of course its very individual and you may find them too soft or even not soft enough. However for sure the advice would be start with the softer options, if too soft then try Leesa.

I really doubt that Emma will be more comfortable for a heavier person. Nothing could be further from the truth. 3cm comfort layer is just not enough and the heavier person will sink in it and technically end up supported only by the base layer, which is rather firm (36kg/m3).
@alanrossreviews

well you couldnt be more wrong :) the heavier you are the softer that firm layer will feel. Firm is a relative term.

no. all foam is made up of cells and cells are made up of pores. it does not mean it soaks up moisture like a sponge. A sponge has other properties that make it such an efficient way of soaking up water.

I just bought an emma. I’m 8.5 stone and have a life long back injury so need support. I had a £300 pocket sprung with memory foam top from eBay. Otty have just tried to get me to buy theirs saying they have 12cm springs. Emma said there is a 4 week adjust period, some people are use to firmer or softer but they’ve created this with the optimum pressure level that is best for support and comfort but people may not have experienced that and it may take longer for the body to adjust to what it “ needs “ rather than what it is use to..
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 лет назад
hi, not sure what your question is?? there is no such thing as optimum pressure level, every single one of us will need something slightly different. how did otty come to ask you to buy their mattress?what is your sleeping positions?
@kellymillington-drake8788
@kellymillington-drake8788 5 лет назад
Otty said for me to cancel my order with Emma and buy theirs as I am being ripped off buying theirs, even with £200 off. I only read the pressure study on the Emma website that was conducted and therefore supposedly followed to create the ‘ perfect mattress for all’ I’m intrigued by Otty due to the springs, as that’s currently what I have now but a cheap eBay version, but it wasn’t advertised on my search so I wonder if it’s far more comfortable than the Emma, due to the memory foam layer over the cool gel layer. Do you have a preference between the two?

Alan Ross Reviews I sleep on my back and side. Never my front as I’m in a world of pain if I accidentally do that. I’m 5ft and 8.5stone if that makes a difference. I prefer a firmer mattress as soft I’ve found really hurts my back, I guess with lack of support. I don’t really get on with the memory foam that sinks too much. Tried a £100 tempur cloud pillow and returned it the next day! Woke up sweating and it’s like sleeping on compacted sand. Dunlopillo latex is what works for me ( if low enough ) but where my mattress has sunk so badly I think it’s making my pillows too high.
@kellymillington-drake8788
@kellymillington-drake8788 5 лет назад
Alan Ross Reviews ott also said their mattress is firmer than Emma! What amazes me is they say I’m being ripped off for £500 mattress of memory foam yet theirs is constructed in China and you can pick up a spring/memory foam mattress with 13.5 gage springs on eBay for less than £100 so I’d say they’re the rip off company keeping costs way lower in China than Germany or UK.. didn’t like the push cut throat nature of Otty staff

I think this is why my videos are very long yes, dont disagree, and why all the big channels for mattresses are very short. I also do not on the most part get free mattresses ( ihad 4 for free) and sign a contract agreeing to a positive review (i have never agreed to anything in return for a mattress and never will) beforehand like several other big channels.
