Emmet Cohen w/ Miguel Zenón & Matt Penman | Caravan 

Jazz is an expression of personal achievement. It is intellectual and spiritual athleticism combined with grace of perception. What a jazz musician finds is a form so deep and inclusive that it sucks into itself all the world’s music and sublimates these musics into an idiom that blends blues and improvisation. A practitioner of jazz is much like a yogi or monk who undertakes a life of contemplation. When musicians arrive together to make music they bring their valise of masteries, their real and fake books, their tools and tuners. Nowadays we have no guides except jazz musicians. The world may not know this. But WE do.

A beautifully delicate opening when everyone comes in and the groove just simmers along until it boils over!

Man, does that look and sound like the most fun in the world! "Caravan" is an infinitely malleable tune to work out on, too, never ends.

Man, this drummer is so outrageously cool. You're not hearing the big chops you get used to hearing from top flight jazz people, conservatory grads, you're hearing beautiful feel, PURE FEEL....wow.

Hearing Matt Penman's awesome intro on bass reminds me that music is not a competition -- since of course I noticed Russell wasn't there. So much music. Thanks for bringing it to us, all of you. Great, gushing ensemble. Man what a piano solo. Lucky neighbors. Love this "Caravan". You can hear it approach in Kyle's drum solo and drive away at the end.

Miguel Zenon has been in San Francisco jazz Collective... a multi grammy winner and played on over 70 albums as an in demand session player he flys under the radar but his one of the greats of this generation ...as evidenced by any time u get a chance to hear him with great players !

Saw Miguel's quartet in Seattle right before the pandemic started, and it remains one of the more memorably incredible live gigs I've seen in the last decade.

These guys are in the zone with this tune. Sax player is phenomenal. I love how he goes full Coltrane/Coleman, this tune is perfect for that. Amazing piano solo, and the way all the players are connected is awesome. I would pay a ton of cash to rehearse with these guys for 1 year.

Me llama la atención el sonido y la afinación de Zenón jejeje muy way pero muy personal, muy diferente. Y la correa del saxo siempre la pone muy larga, recuerdo una rico acolchada que la ponía al máximo de largo jejeje. Por cierto el batería lleva un look muy parecido al bananero jjj.

How incredible is this clip of one of my favourite Duke numbers, such superb musicians combining their talents .. As I was watching this for the tenth time I had a couple of thoughts, like, what would the Duke feel about this interpretation in a manner that couldn't possibly have been dreamed of back in 1936? I'm sure of one thing, he would have just loved Emmett's solo. The other thing I've been wondering Is Miguel's sax 1/1,000,000 of a s/tone out... It only becomes noticeable after the solos when the ear has accepted the key. Sorry to say I am inflicted with this problem but happy to say that 99.9999% of folks think I'm crazy when I mention this... as I'm sure you all are. Not withstanding, I'm gonna sit right down and listen again for the eleventh time to this wonderful music and hope I'm not offending anyone!

El mundo de los comentarios de RU-vid en conciertos de jazz necesita saber mi opinión de m#€rda: El sonido de Zenón seguramente sea el más bello en un alto junto con Kenny Garrett, Cannonball y Perico Sambeat. También amo a saxos altos más brillantes como Sanborn, Marienthal o Albright, pero si no estás tocando algo más electrónico que requiera ese estilo agresivo, este tipo de tono es para mí la búsqueda que debe tener todo saxo alto actual que quiera tocar en una onda post-bop. Me alegra mucho escucharlo con Cohen, hacen unos conciertos magníficos y muy reales, realmente los disfruto más que algunas grabaciones de jazz en estudio con mucha más calidad de sonido. Por último, ojalá pronto lleven a David Sánchez a una de estas sesiones, intuyo que acabará pasando.
