I love that Ben aflec as the best friend isn’t jealous and trying to hold him back because the best friend is insecure. Instead he’s one for the major reasons that the main protagonist is able to grow and move on.
This might be the closest to a perfect movie. The fact that Matt and Ben wrote this screenplay so young blows me away. RIP Robin Williams. Amazing performance
His last line in the movie "Son of a bitch, he stole my line.." wasn't even scripted. He just did what he did best and sent out a zinger and they loved it and kept it as the ending.
@@j00jy So much of Robin William's dialogue in just about every movie he's in was Ad Libbed. Pretty sure that directors just knew to let him go and they'd get gold on film. Such a brilliant comedian/comedy actor and an amazing dramatic actor. RIP.
@@j00jy That line wasn't scripted the first time he said it, technically. He improvised the line in office scene talking about the baseball game, and Damon's natural reaction is epic.
Notice that Robin Williams called him son during the "it's not your fault" scene. He said "listen to me son. It's not your fault". He was portraying his father, calling him son, and taking the blame for his actions. Fantastic psychological work.
...I disagree that he was "taking the blame" for anyone else's actions. I think he was using "son" as shorthand for "this is the parenting you deserve" to help Will heal and *really* get him to understand that being abused was *not* because he was a bad kid.
They asked Matt Damon after the Oscars that year, if he was more proud of the best writer award, or the best actor award. His response was, "Are you kidding me? I'm just happy I got to come to this ceremony. It's been my lifelong dream to just attend this."
The scene where Robin Williams tells the story of his wife farting was completely unscripted as-lib by Williams. That's why Matt Damon's laughter looked so real...because it was. If you watch closely, you can see the camera shake some because the cameraman was laughing, too, because nobody was expecting Robin Williams to tell that story.
Kevin Smith is the one who helped get this script in front of the movie producers. In exchange, Matt Damon and Ben Afleck appeared in Smith’s film “Dogma” (as well as smaller appearances in some of his other films). I recommend watching Dogma - it’s a lot to think about.
It is always tough to watch this movie for me...I grew up in some of the same areas that the film takes place, so it literally hits really close to home for me. It makes me think about the past, and I miss a few of the places the film shows that do not exist anymore...and most of all, it makes me miss Robin Williams.
When you recognize the places that you see on screen, especially if they dont exist any more than I bet nostalgia hits really hard yeah 😬 Robin Williams was just perfect for this role 👌🏻👌🏻
@@ptthatswhatshesaid The toughest one is the place where Will and Skylar have their first kiss...the bit where she gets some of his pickle (LOL)...I sat in those same seats many times. That spot was called The Tasty and it closed in 1997...it had only 14 seats and measured about 20 square meters. And yeah...what can you say about Robin in this film...just perfection.
Lucy's ability to be one step ahead of the movie at almost all times was a great testiment to her emotional intelligence. I've watched many, many movie reactors and she really seems to be a natural. It was my first time on your channel and, of course, I'm now subscribed.
when they first met ... he was looking for weaknesses in robins character. when he asked "what do you bench" he said "285" ... thats a lot - he couldnt make fun of that. so he quickly changed to the painting. he was fishing...
The scene with Minnie Driver and Matt Damon when he discloses that he is an orphan is some off the finest acting that I have ever seen. Just amazing...the Robin Williams monologue scene in the park is a close second.
Lovely. It's a special one, isn't it? And to think Ben & Matt were basically kids when they wrote this, simply amazing. Thank you for sharing this one with us. 🙂 Oh, and btw, when they went to the Oscar ceremony they both brought their mothers with them which was very sweet. And then they actually won! How cool was that.
7min00sec : Stellan Skarsgård = Baron Harkonen (Dune 1,2). This is one of the rare films with truly authentic emotions about difficult and deep themes. And no pets or children were used for this. 😁
Good Will Hunting is just another fictional tale taking inspiration real-life events. Although the film isn't entirely based on a specific real-life person or story, it draws inspiration from true events that occurred in the lives of Damon and those around him
One bit if trivia: Ben & Matt were good friends and headed out to be actors, but no one would hire them. So they wrote their own movie & found someone to produce & distribute it, and cast themselves in their roles not caring which one the producers thought should play Will. And they became famous! 😊
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Another great movie to watch with Matt Damon is The Rainmaker!! It’s got courtroom action and the movie is made kind of like Good Will Hunting!!
Can u believe these 2 dorks, Matt and Ben, started writing this in their early twenties, having no idea what or how to write! And someone they knew was blown away, and got a rough bit to robin! And how they got Robin and Stellen to do this, I'll never know! Robin won an Oscar for this! After Robin died, Matt goes back to the bench every year on Robin's bday, sometimes with his kids. The park bench is a memorial now! The younger guy is Casey Affleck! The red head is now in Yellowstone, Cole Hauser! A fantastic actor, but a bit of a loose cannon. His father was even a better actor, but certifiable! Wings Hauser!! Originally, they didn't know how to write the end. Robin comes up with the final line, director and Matt look at each other like, Movie done! He add-libbed the wife farting lines. Matt is cracking up for real. Even the camera man was rolling....look at the camera frame on that scene, it's shaking! Robin has done several top feel good movies. This, patch Adams, good morning Vietnam, awakenings, Dead Poets, and really one could say the bird cage, Doubtfire and Jumanji....which is really a movie about Spielberg's relationship with his dad. In this movie, Ben is actually quite smart, with his brother, with the employee guys, he talks them into the dust! He could do sales, marketing, etc., he also doesn't know his potential.
When this film was released, Robin Williams was the only reason I went to see it. I grew up watching Robin Williams on the TV Show "Mork & Mindy". Robin had a way of acting that reached into your chest and squeezed your heart for every tear you had in you. Other fantastic films of his that you need to see if you haven't already are "Dead Poet's Society", "What Dreams May Come", "Patch Adams", and "Awakenings" to mention just a few films. This film was fantastic. Robin Williams won his only Oscar with this film as "Best Actor In Supporting Role". This film wouldn't have risen to the level of greatness that it did had Robin not been a part of it. I hope you react to more of his films. They're amazing.
Fantastic actor. I remember us watching the movie Awakenings. We didn't record any reaction video for that one, but we were both bawling our eyes out with that one 🥲
Thank you for not informing her she would need tissues. I did not have any warning when i semi-randomly selected this movie out of 12 while stuck in Atlanta.
My first name is Bill which is another alias for William as is Will. I was stuck in hotel in Atlanta for a week for work and decided to walk to a nearby movie. Several were showing. Looked at the name for this picked it somewhat based on my name. Have loved it from that first watching.
When a movie has 3 to 4 1 on 1 monologues / back and forth moments that just stick with your forever, you know it's a powerful film. That bench from the bench scene in the movie became a makeshift memorial for a few weeks after Williams' death. Matt Damon in The Martian is one heck of a movie and he almost carries it by himself.. It's so good.
Absolutely brilliant movie with excellent acting from the late Robin Williams (RIP) Worth noting that scene talking about his wife farting was an impromptu scene, hence the genuine laughter.
Hi guys! I just discovered your channel and I was amazed how much Lucy looks like Mar Serracanta. She's a pretty good amateur football player from Spain, you should look her up, I swear they are twins 😂 😂 😂 great reaction!!!
The Thing about Robin Williams Character Shawn and Matt's Character Will is Will and Shawn were from the same world "Southie" and that is why Will was able to be normal/himself and truthful with Shawn because Shawn's not a Judgmental outsider like all the other shrinks....that is why by the end of the film Will has found someone on his level who is not just a friend but an unofficial adopted caring Father figure he can call and hangout/visit with down the road in the future
The writing, editing and acting come together near perfectly, with Gus Van Sant choosing his scenes carefully to coalesce seamlessly with the emotional flaws so evident in the title character. Something as simple as Will standing in the rain, hair wet and looking dishevelled, while at a loss for words in calling Skylar, who has placed him in unfamiliar territory. Trauma has taught him that vulnerability is a weakness, yet one biting joke later about his buddy's mother's "800 number" and a good dose of humility is avoided. Will can safely amble back over his castle wall, unscathed.
Good reaction & completely agree that Ben Affleck is a bad actor, really noticeable in The Sum of all Fears when acting with truly good actors, he seemed so far out of their league.
I love this movie but if you want to check out a movie Ben Affleck was great in check out The Accountant. His lack of overthinking things seems to have worked in his favor there. I was upset that movie didn't get a sequel.
Oh we saw that one! I agree, it ended in a way that was really great to do a sequel! To me it kinda seemed the movie followed the formula of a superhero story
Nice reaction. FYI, if you continue to read the description before the movies you're going to read some spoilers. Going in completely blind will result in a better reaction imo.
The saddest thing about Will's relationship in this movie is Damon's real world relationship with Driver. Guy broke her poor heart with a pretty shitty sounding move.
after many years of watching this film i always wished they did another scene with Shawn and Will's Friends meet in a bar and they are all Talking about wondering what Will is doing now then we see a clip of Will and Skyler together getting ready to do it then it cut's back to the Bar and Shawn says to Casey Afflack's Character and says So Will mentioned that you have a weird ritual when doing personal pleasure with yourself I would like to see you sometime this week to talk about that and then every one of them laughs.
I've read debates about how much they wrote whether they came up with the idea and the dialog was refined by someone else. The way things work in Hollywood famous people get all the credit. I could be wrong but I have trouble believing a pair of young inexperienced actors could write something like this. They've never repeated writing anything like this again... It also wouldn't have been as impactful without Robin Willams. But fan boys don't come at me.
Without any proof of anyone else, I suppose they wrote it. The opposite is possible of course. But if it's just a question of not believing 2 young guys wrote this, then I don't automaticaly think it wasn't them
@@ptthatswhatshesaid I did quick reddit search "The reputed screenwriter William Goldman apparently had quite an input on the dialogue and structure of Good Will Hunting..." Reminds me when celebrities "write" a book about their life. It's common practice to sit down with a ghost writer and no one cares who that person is. I find it suspicious the first screen play they wrote won an Oscar and then never wrote anything again. They also are not screen writers or writers by profession.
By the way, the best line for me was when they hugged neard the end and Matt Daemon asked if that violated the client - therapist rules (guessing at the wording), and Robin Williams said, 'Only if you grab my ass'.
Everyone hates the use of violence when it comes to a disagreement, but they are ok with it if the one threatening with violence is on your side. I’m speaking on the part where Matt Damon challenged the guy at the bar to a fist fight because they had a couple of insults.
It's a lovely idea that someone telling you "it's not your fault" and you having a good cry is the cure-all. But it's not. It doesn't make an ounce of difference. You still carry all the crap with you.
great movie and appreciate the reaction. I think she has a how shall i say without sounding rude, a very european woman disposition. Thats ia great trate on some things but thats all i will. say. I hope you get a super tahnks so people can donte and contribute to your pursuit The things she coplained about im nut sure if they reall consider how green they both were and how low budget this was.
Thanks a lot ☺️ I love how someone having a very european woman disposition can be a rude thing! 😂😂😂 I would say it is an acurate assesment. Not sure if its the most correct comparison, but I've heard that it is kinda similar to new yorker disposition 😅
45:40/Lucy, baby girl.... your a romantic person at heart 💜❤️!! I knew that there was something that I love about you!! A long with the fact that you're very beautiful!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥
I know this is a reaction video but this lady NEVER shuts up AND due to that, talks over the film's dialogue often. Damn. Take a breath lady and relax. Listen a while. You don't have CONSTANTLY TALK.
Oh man, you would get really mad if you saw any of our other videos... This must be the one where she is mostly quiet and don't talk as much! 😬😬😅 Especially because it is mostly very beautiful dialogue
You think you can make a longer intro before you start the movie I didn't even go ahead and finish watching your reaction I just became too annoyed with your intro
Will Hunting is an INTP-T, Chuckie is an ESTP-T, Prof Lambeau is an ENTJ, and Sean is an INFP. These are just a few of the 16 personalities. Look deep into the 16 MBTI personalities. In a way, he kinda of is hunting for knowledge.
Sean and Gerry's bar bet scene was a highpoint for me. It brilliantly showed the character and agendas of both men. Gerry wanted a quick fix for Will. He wanted Will to be a math genius and nothing else. Sean wanted to help Will the young man. He wanted Will to find inner peace, love and a good life.
Thanks for reacting to this, one of my all-time favorite movies. So well-written and acted, a true cinematic gem. I'm glad you guys got a lot out of it too, excellent reaction and discussion! Although, I must say, I disagree with Lucy about the soundtrack - I loved it. Elliot Smith was a very unique and talented musician (RIP).
@@ptthatswhatshesaid True, but Will had enough faith in the auto repair skills of his friends to make the trip. He's very intelligent, and his faith is based a lifetime of observation, so I think it's likely that he was right. Or maybe he broke down somewhere in Indiana and never made it, lol.
