I mean the haka is both a war dance and a ceremonial dance. I remember seeing a translated version of this same video and the actual words the men and women are saying at something to the affect of “don’t carry your burdens alone anymore, share them with us since you are joining our family” Plus the haka runs off of pure energy that humans have held onto since the beginning of our species that we should tap into a little more honestly. If traditions like this can affect us this much, why not conduct them more often and document it for others to see?

The name of the haka is Tika Tonu (translation, "What's right is always right.)" It is not a war or battle haka as so often mentioned in the comments. It usually used to mark a right of passage e.g. boyhood to adulthood, graduation or in this case a wedding. This haka is performed by the groom's side of the family welcoming the bride into their midst and expressing their unconditional support for the couple.

Ive watched several Haka videos now, the absolute intensity of their expressions are incredible. After they finish, there must he a recovery period to adjust back to "normal". All their eyes express a "rage" that is scary. Especially the female participants

If I'm not mistaken, the Tika Tonu Haka is seen as a gift, from the family to the groom and the bride. And, basically, since it talks about being ready to face your adult life, when you join the Haka it does not only mean you're showing you're ready to face your life from now on, but youre returning the Haka as well, basically making a gift to your family. It's complicated, I know, but once I saw a video about this particular form of Haka and all this things was explained this way...I just hope I did not say anything wrong or stupid

I'd really like to see the Australian sports teams do the aboriginal war dances before games and for normal Aussies to do it at everyday celebrations like weddings, funerals and birthdays like Kiwis do with the Haka. It would help Australians understand the aboriginal culture and it could intimidate other teams and it would make the start of Australia New Zealand games absolutely mind blowing. Something feral and raw, pure emotion of spirit, ancient and foreign, but familiar. I have never bore witness to something more true, I need not know what it means to hear its reminder of who I am. Here is some more maori stuff for you. Maoris are just the best. News from the Rotorua Daily Post: "Child, 2, dies after Rotorua driveway accident, family member steals from doctor trying to save child's life." As hospital staff tried to save the life of a 2-year-old boy run over in a Rotorua driveway, a family member swiped a doctor's two phones and a bank card and went on a spending spree. The child died a short time later but Melissa Herewini (A MAORI) had already taken the bank card to four stores in Rotorua and bought alcohol, food, petrol, phone credit and cigarettes. New Zealand Hearald news headline 29 May, 2024 “Raglan man Simon Terence Hamiora Kereopa drags partner outside naked, pours boiling water over her“ Kereopa ( A MAORI) dragged her outside through the kitchen door by her arms, down the kitchen steps and onto the ground. He then grabbed the kettle, which was just inside the door, and poured the boiling water over the victim - who was naked at the time - directly onto her skin. As he did so, Kereopa told her “you deserve it, and that’s what you get”. He then told her he would reboil the jug and pour it on her face. She ran to seek help from her sister but she was asleep, before running into her daughter’s room and hugging her. Kereopa then went into the room and said, “once you let go, I’m burning your face”. Judge Stephen Clark noted Kereopa’s 17 family violence convictions, eight of which were against the current victim. The man responsible, Simon Terence Hamiora Kereopa, was today jailed for the incident, his ninth conviction against the victim during their 20-year-plus relationship. News 24 headline: "Shock over Maori infant brutality" They have been scalded, burned with cigarettes, raped, had bones broken and been beaten unconscious, sometimes to death. Horrific cases of Maori youngsters - some under two years of age - being tortured, abused and KILLED BY MEMBERS OF THEIR OWN FAMILIES Among the grisly headlines that have dominated the nation's media over recent weeks are stories of a 28-month-old Maori girl in a coma after suffering severe head injuries, a broken arm, cuts, bruises and cigarette burns over most of her body. The toddler's 52-year-old grandmother was being held in prison on assault charges. Police in the central North Island town of Carterton are investigating the death a week ago of 23-month-old Maori girl Hinewaoriki Karaitiana-Matiaha who was sexually abused, scalded with hot liquid and beaten before being taken to hospital by relatives. The child, who was put in the care of her grandmother by the Child, Youth and Family Service after consultations with the toddler's family just short of her second birthday, was dead on arrival at Masterton Hospital late on Sunday, July 23. And last week, a coroner in the east coast town of Tauranga found that two-month-old Marcus Te Hira Grey died from a brain haemorrhage following a severe beating by his father. These cases follow the recent release of a report into the gruesome killing last April of four-year-old James Whakaruru, beaten to death by his stepfather for failing to call him Dad. The stepfather had been jailed once for assaulting the boy, but the youngster endured a lifetime of horrific beatings, despite being under the eye of various child welfare agencies, and his hellish existence went unnoticed. The proportion of extreme cases of brutality towards children among the Maori population - which makes up about 15 percent of New Zealand's 3.8 million citizens - is far higher than for any other ethnic group.

+Whitney Dahlin It is a cry for life, and also a battlecry. You can get a subtitles version anywhere in youtube. In the wedding, basicly the big group challenge the Marrying couple, and the couple then answers back. Why? Because that's how they show the strenght they have in life to battle everything life throw at them now that they will tie the knot (sort of speak). It's like saying "you won't beat us, together we are stronger".

I'm sorry but some of these comments are a bit annoying, I'm from New Zealand and part Maori, I was raised in Maori culture to an extent not as much as I would've liked but the disrespectful comments that denounce our culture is pretty insulting, I know it's more lack of understanding but the Haka is tradition and I've grown up both watching the Haka and performing the Haka at celebrations, weddings etc You may not understand it but a little respect for another culture would be appreciated.

Where is your country? You had better not be a WOKE American. If you are and you think Colonials took the land and you have to apologize you are sadly mistaken. Every country or group of people took others land and did terrible things since the dawn of modern mankind. It's called survival and survival of the fittest. If you are a WOKE American, you have to hate this Wedding because the beautiful Maori bride is marrying a Mormon and basically they are current best Colonial colonizers of the modern age and they unite their vanquished with their Cult Christianity. Not taking anything away from the Maori this is a beautiful custom and should be preserved but countries that were "colonized" survive, grow, and prosper because the IDEAS of the COLONIZERS were successful IDEA that have SUCCESS and MERIT. This sad LIBERALISM in America and around the World is a cancer!! Young people want to have Socialism now, SOCIALISM. Go talk to any CUBAN that escaped SOCIALISM and ask them how that went or talk to Latin American Socialism. There is a reason they are escaping that for America!! Don't even apologize!!

OG Lurker it is called Haka, a traditional dance of the Māori - indigenous people of New Zealand. Haka are most commonly known from their use as a war dance, performed before battle to show how fierce and strong they are, to intimidate the enemy. Haka also are used at funerals, or to give respectful welcome to foreign dignitaries, etc. Then it is a sign of great respect. This is a coming of age variation, welcoming the son into the family, for example. There's been some viral videos of haka including this wedding above featuring the Māori bride (and groom? Many Māori pass as white) - who is clearly very emotional at the performance by their friends/wedding party and she ends up joining in, as does he. There's also many videos of New Zealand rugby/soccer/football teams the All Blacks and Black Ferns performing Haka before a game, including at the Olympics. NZ teams have been performing Haka before games for well over 100 years! If you'd like to see more, searching Haka here on RU-vid will give you many options. And here's a link in case you want to read a bit. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka?wprov=sfla1
