Love NHT speakers. My first 5.1 system was with five NHT Superzerzero and a NHT SW3P 12” sub (still use the sub). I then upgraded the FLC to 1.1/1.1C. Used the NHT from 1996 to 2020 when I changed my FLC to Klipsch RP-8000F/RP-600C. I was looking at Marantz and Emotiva to replace a Yamaha as I was having 4 Atmos speakers installed in the ceiling. I ended up getting a Sony STR-AZ5000ES and have been very pleased with. Love my 5.1.4 setup. The Sony 360SSM audio processor does an incredible job of creating a 360° soundstage. Andrew Robinson review of the Sony STR-AZ7000ES steered me towards the Sony receivers. I bought the STR-AZ5000ES because I didn’t need 13.1 channels (currently using 9.1) and felt the 5000 lower price, to me, felt like a better buy. Thanks for the review. Keep us posted on your findings in the coming weeks.
I've listened to many receivers over the years and even though I'm on now on high-performance AVR with matching high-performance power amps. My first receiver was the budget Sony SDR dn1080 it was a punchy little bastard. In fact when it came to two channels stereo playback I actually preferred the sound of the cheap £400 Sony over the £2,000 Denon 6500. Mind you with the Denon being a mid priced AVR when it came to multi-channel playback, it absolutely knocked the Sony up the park. When it comes to stereo music Sony will always have a place in my heart ❤ Just like myself, I hope you have many years of enjoyable listening.
Always nice to see the couch off the back wal! Believer it or not as well as multi-channel listening. When it comes to enjoying stereo music playback having the couch off the back wall is half the battle. An avid music listener.
Ive had the MR1L for about 10 days now. I’ve experienced some of those bugs/glitches as well. But the sound quality is superior compared to my older Denon 4300 so I am willing to overlook these issues (some of which the Denon also had). For reference im running a 7.2.4 system and do mostly movie watching and gaming (about 50/50 split). I run my Series X and PS5 straight into my LG OLED so lack of 2.1 wasnt an issue for me.
Hey Bryan, happy to read that you’re also enjoying the sound quality of the MR1L! The bugs/glitches are a little annoying but it isn’t a lot of issues and hopefully Emotiva releases a firmware update in the near future that takes care of everything. Gaming must be awesome with the OLED tv and surround sound. I might try it one day. I have the Sony Bravia 4K OLED which is now even more stunning with Emotiva’s sound. Thanks for watching and your comment ✌🏼
Hello, As an owner of emotiva products, I can only say they are a great reputable company and the products are solid and defect proof. As was looking at your setup in the video and you for sure did the right thing in replacing the your Harmon for that emotiva receiver. If you want that mr1 to kick more ass, replace your 2 front channel speakers with a more revealing speakers. You may need to spend a bit more for a pair of solid fronts but it will match sound wise perfectly. Try and audition a pair of Klipsch RP-600m speakers for your fronts and you will hear the big difference. Power amps: If you can swing the money buy one of the power amps from emotiva preferably the XPA Gen 3 models, they are high in price but I can guarantee it will match greatly with the Klipsch fronts and the MR1. The sound will be clear, precise, and more revealing with detail and most of all POWER 😊.
You need to treat your room it sounds echoey. Also as some with the similar AV pre tonewinner at-300 don't use auto EQ it's not very good. Measure manually with rew and enter in manually. Also this avr probably lacks analogue bypass so don't use analogue inputs if possible as it'll convert to digital
Hi there, nice to see more people doing more reviews of these units, been looking at one myself for some time. While you were talking about the volume adjustment I had a realization what that was relating to, Emotiva has elected to use discrete ladder resister volume control from my understanding. This means that rather than a digital alteration the change is kept in the analogue realm which is said to give the exceptional performance. That being said you will hear the value changing as this is an alteration of the sequence of resisters that make up that volume level. In summary I don't believe this considered a bug or a glitch per say its just an attribute of this kind of technology. Thought it was worth mentioning
Hello, this is great information about the volume control. I never knew this and appreciate you explaining how it works. I’m happy you enjoyed my review and for commenting ✌🏼✌🏼
Hey, thanks for your time and opinion. I'm very interested in the MR1l, the only thing really holding me back is lack of networking/internet capabilities. Other than that it's absolutely perfect, short of me listening to it. The HDMI capabilities are pretty limited! also (no HDMI 2.1), which in this day and age is a serious oversight. One thing I noticed, your room is very "live", meaning u have a LOT of reflections going on. U really can benefit from some good room treatment, I can't tell if your couch is fabric or leather, I'm guessing leather, because the way the reflections are, a fabric couch would help a lot and some heavy curtains would go wonders as well, if u don't wanna go all out in room treatment. Just an idea that will really benefit your listening experience!
Yes, the MR1L doesn’t have as many features as other AVR’s in this price range but it does have more power and comes from a company that consistently gets positive reviews for its amplifiers sound quality. The build quality in my opinion is definitely better than competitors at this price range. This was most important for me. It isn’t perfect either but some other AVR’s have their issues to consider too. I still have to set up the Emo-Q to see how well that works but it’s supposed to do what I need. Thank you for your advice regarding room treatment. I understand but don’t find my room to be very live or too acoustically problematic but this is something one can adjust to taste if they feel they need it. I have utilized a lot of acoustic foam panels to absorb sound at first reflection points in other spaces but I don’t feel I need it here. I appreciate you watching and commenting ✌🏼✌🏼
From my understanding, this, alongside the MR1 and MC1 will be getting the 8k/4k 120hz HDMI board upgrade options later this year or next. I think they also plan on adding IMAX Enhanced and DTS-X Pro codecs as well.
I Just order the MR1L. Still not sure if I did the right choice. Was looking at Merantz cinema 60. Do you think I made the right choice? I can’t find any reviews on the MR1L at all.
Hey Sonic, I hope you’ve received your MR1L. When it comes to power and sound quality I feel you made the right choice. Also, if this AVR has all of the features you think you need, you may have made the right choice for yourself. I’d love to know what you think once you have yours hooked up and get enough time to become well acquainted with it.
Thank you for your opinion and suggestion. Most RU-vid videos people watch are from creators who have better recording equipment and wear a microphone on themselves so their voice comes in loud and clear. I do not intend to invest in this for my very infrequent videos. I’m very familiar with room acoustics and how you mostly listen to the room your speakers are in. I don’t find my room to be very live/ reflective but I can see how this video makes it seem that way. It’s actually an very interesting microphone type and ability phenomenon that I enjoy discussing below. Let’s take into consideration what is really happening… I am speaking loudly in a larger room so the iPhone I’m recording on (which was almost 8ft away) could pick up my voice ok. This is not what this microphone was designed for and it distorts the reality of the acoustics of the space. You can recreate this effect in your own home by recording yourself far away from your phone microphone and it’ll make it seem as if you’re in a way more sound reflective “live” space than it actually is. Hope this helps explain how a microphone when not used effectively can distort reality. You can really geek out about this when learning about music recording ✌🏼 Dave Rat has a RU-vid channel with awesome videos about the realities of microphones when recording live sound
good review. Probably its a good item for $1500 but it lacks a ton of modern features, existing in, say, denon 3800. Namely Auro3D and Dirac Live. As reputable youtubers have said 85%+ of all Atmos tracks are trash and only Auro3D can give it a chance. Also Dirac Live while expensive is light years ahead of Emotiva flavored room correction soft. Also as other mentioned your room sounds echoye, it desperatly needs sound treatments. Thanks.
