How can a show produce an ENTIRE SEASON of S tier episodes!??

Fun fact: Canute commanding the waves was a real historical event, and the whole point was to show his powerlessness in the face of God, despite his power as “King in the North”.

"Watch me stop the waves." The biggest flex was that when Canute said that, everyone looked to see if the waves actually did stop.

Seeing Thorfinn become the man his father always wanted him to be is honestly one of the best character arcs I've seen in any anime

My man Thorfinn gained the respect of all these Vikings by getting his ass absolutely beat. Now THAT’s badass.

Saying “I have no enemies” and gaining the respect of 100 vikings after getting your ass beat 100 times gotta be one of the coldest moments of all time. Thorfinn is HIM

Thorfinns dad told him "you have no enemies" back when Thorfinn wanted a sword. Thorfinn barely remembers his father. He only remembers his father's death. But when he said "you arent my enemy" he remembered. He's still trying to honor his father and i think that was the moment he felt like he finally honored him

He outlasted his opponent without even throwing a punch. Thorfinn a true warrior for real. I really hope that Thorfinn wins best main character at the anime awards, he absolutely deserves it

*Fun Fact:* That speech where Canute commanded the waves to stop is actually a very famous story of the real Cnut. In the real speech Cnut, stated that it was to show that there are forces not even a king can command.

Just for the people who were wondering, "hnefatafl" is something similar to Norse chess. You have an asymmetric game where one player has their king and their army in the middle of the board, and the other player has their army surrounding the other player's pieces. If the player in the middle can extricate themselves, they win; otherwise, the other player wins. This perfectly mimics the end of this episode, as Thorfinn is the "king" in the middle, while Canute is surrounding him with his "pieces", the Viking warriors. This is interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, Thorfinn is being placed on the same level as Canute, insofar as they are both kings within the game. Considering how a significant part of Canute's ideology is that he is the only one who is able to bring peace and a paradise to the world because of his power as a king, this shows how much Thorfinn is equal to Canute in terms of ideas. It also reinforces the "discrimination" philosophy from Season 1; God discriminated in favor of Canute to make him a king when Thorfinn could easily have taken Canute's place with his strong ideals of nonviolence, which as Einar points out, would be better than Canute telling his Vikings to kill peasants to achieve peace. Additionally, it's very cool that Thorfinn literally tells Wulf and the the other king's guards that Canute and Ketil could just talk things out/play hnefatafl instead of forcing others to fight, which is probably what is going to happen in the next episode. It'll be fun to see how Thorfinn responds to the requirement of killing by Canute, although I think he'll realize that he's fighting to save others and so not do any lethal damage, like he did against Snake. Talking won't work, as it didn't with Snake, so Thorfinn realizes he'll have to fight just to make sure he doesn't die. I don't know if I explained that well but that's my best interpretation.

I have to say Thirffinn has become one of my all time favorite MCs after this season. His character development has been outstanding💯💯 🙏

I loved watching canute try and calm the waves and explain what he was trying to do. that part was handled beautifully and ofc "i have no enemies" Season 2 has surpassed my expecations like crazy i saw so many people saying it would be mid

Vinland Saga is a very special series. I'm thankful for it.

Canute in this episode, reminded me way too much of Griffith from Berserk. Grandiose attitude, wants to defy a "higher power", and build a utopia but will sacrifice their own "souls" to get what they want.

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted all of chapters 96 and 97. A fun bit of historical trivia, when Canute “commanded” the waves to halt in today’s episode, that was Yukimura essentially adapting the actual real life story of “King Canute and the tide”, which is an apocryphal anecdote illustrating the piety or humility of the historical King Canute the Great, recorded in the 12th century by Henry of Huntingdon. Ironically, said story of Canute has often been misinterpreted and flipped to make it seem like King Canute was an egotist who believed he had supernatural powers, despite the original story being about the literal opposite. Besides the standard shortening of dialogue, there wasn’t any significant difference between this episode and the manga. Though I suppose Thorfinn’s face looked even more visible messed up in the manga (since Yukimura’s manga artwork is often more highly rendered in detail than what the anime can feasibly achieve).

This season segmented Vinland Saga as one of my favorite anime of all time. This writing is incredible.

Bassically the "I have no enemies" is the most important phrase in this entire story, from the moment his dad told him and we had it again when he escaped from "Hel"

Thorfinn is THAT MAN 🔥 nuff said 💪🏾 This man is DOING and BEING what his father, Thors wanted him to do! BECAME A TRUE WARRIOR Literal chills the whole episode 😩 While Canute is doing exactly what his father said he would do… the crown is the ruler 😮‍💨. Two sons… Thorfinn & Canute… displaying what their fathers spoke. This anime is perfection 🔥

I really have to thank Vinland Saga and its author, because it was the show that had the biggest impact on my thoughts and perspective about life. This is seriously the peak fiction in the anime world. The storytelling in this show makes a conversation between guys become the highest climax in a whole SEASON, a debate of divergent a ideas between a slave and a king that grabs your eyes on screen to presence this moment. It's beautiful.

Imagine if next episode Thorfinn went "you know Canute maybe ur right, violence do be hitting" and just breaks everyone's necks

Canutes speech about the tide is actually an interpretation of a real Christian anectdote (well probably christian in origin). In the story King Canute demonsrstes that the human secular power he wields is insignificant compared to the power of God, who can controll the movement of the waves while he cannot. In the anecdote Canute says this in a devout way, as if to yield authority to god. But Yukimura has reworked to purpouse of the anecdote in that Canute uses the same reasoning to put himself in opposition to god (in a way). I’m always so impressed about Yukimuras dedication to research and understanding.

By far the best show of the season. Thorfins progression is unbelievable

A King doesn't have the luxury of finding cushy methods to prevent bloodshed. Can reduce his extent but not avoid.

We can see that when thorfinn was taking the 100th punch a picture of him young and his father was seen, we actually saw this scene in season 1 it was when thorfinn tried to get revenge and he stole a knife from his father, his father saw him and then he asked why he wanted to take the knife and at this moment thorfinn said that he wanted to take revenge from the other kid and his father replied that thorfinn has no enemies and that no one has enemy, so it is a pretty cool parallel. Sorry if my English isn’t perfect, I’m from France and I love watch you guys react and I saw that Shera quit remember the scene so I wanted to give some precision.

Be honest, watching or reading this the first time, could you ever see from season one Canute becoming an antagonist in the story? I can't give enough praise to the writing and for the anime, the VAs. It's already a masterpiece in my eyes.

Einar deserved to be there, he showed thorfinn how to create life, this whole season they did everything together, and canute is spouting his ideals, but this whole season, we’ve seen him commit terrible acts. Killing his brother because he MAY have become an obstacle. Canute is hiding behind ideals and einar is there to confront canute with the lives he can take away without a second thought.

by the way in episode 1 or 2 i forget thorfinn tries to grab the dagger out of his dads chest and his dad takes it away and tells thorfinn that he doesnt need a weapon for killing because he has no enemies.

Incase you missed it, after Thorfinn takes the hard blow and yells at Drott he stops going with the punches and just takes them fully. It's an interesting detail that shows Thorfinn's character well. And what's more is that this scene shows how strong Thorfinn actually is, because he took 68 full force punches from a guy called the bear killer to the face and stayed standing. Sure Drott was tired by the end of it but that just shows how hard he was hitting Thorfinn. Drott is a trained warrior who's probaby fought hundreds of battles and wars, the fact that he's tired from punching an immobile target shows how hard he went on Thorfinn.

This entire episode of Vinland Saga was just incredible. It's quite possibly the best episode I've seen of any anime in this entire spring season. Almost everything in this episode was great in my opinion. - The Vikings even Drott (who later apologised) having respect for Thorfinn as a true warrior. - Thorfinn finally saying the words his father Thors (and even us viewers) wanted him to say and believe in all this time. - Olmar admiring Thorfinn's determination and strength to fight for Ketil's farm without any violence. - Einar showing us the pain of an average person getting caught in the violence caused by ideals of people like Canute. - Canute revealing his true ideals on how he will make his version of "Paradise" on earth.

Always love when shows raise the question of whether or not the ends justify the means. Canute has an otherwise noble goal to unify the Vikings and create a paradise for them, but if the cost of the paradise is the suffering of innocents is it worth achieving? Does the goal justify the method by which you attain it? Love moral dilemmas.

Last video someone commented that they didn’t understand how people thought getting punched was badass. Imagine letting someone hit you until they can’t move anymore, yet you’re still standing. That’s badass, and that’s what Thorfinn did. You’re so not on my level how about you get 100 free punches.

The moral debate between the two is so interesting. Canute kind of reminds me of Eren, but with a more complex philosophy behind his actions. The assertion that the suffering of many (erens genocide and canutes pillaging) is justified by the liberation of a few (paradis island and the vikings/sinners) is a quality they share. However i do find it easier to see canutes persoective than erens lol. Also, i dont think thorfinn and canute share the same goal. On the surafce it seems similar as you could see vinland, a place without war or slavery, as a paradise. However they differ on two major points - 1, Canutes paradise is heaven on earth, Thorfinss is simply the absence of man made suffering, and 2, Canutes paradise will be made whilst Throfinns will be FOUND. I think its to purposefully emphasise the difference in their characterizations and represent their character change. Canute went from a passive, genlte being to an active forceful one. Thorfinns growth was in the opposite direction. Therefore, i think the show wants us to disagree with Canutes approach. If an acceptance of the pain of reality and the power to take that without retaliation (Thorfinn being beaten by Drott is the physical representation of this) is what was required for Thorfinn to finally be called "a true warrior", Canute cannot he further from it. He is retaliation PERSONIFIED - aka his rebellion against God, the ultimate retaliation against existence itself. Canute is not a warrior - he is a King. Sweyn reminds him of this daily. The crown on his head corrupted him from the minute he first wore it in season 1 (the first time he kills someone). Despite not being obsessed with material possesions like other kings Canute is still obsessed with the materialsation of a paradise on earth. So much so that he disgregards the hell he leaves on his wake. This episode was excellent. Some of the best I've ever seen, period. Ive still got a lot of amazing anime, manga, manhwa etc to experience though!

The “I have no enemies” is a reference to Thors who tried to explain to Thorfin as a child why he didn’t need to go off and fight. It’s the culmination of Thors wish as now Thorfin is the man Thors wanted him to be yet at the same time due to his past he’s is also one of the deadliest fighters out there so rather than be Thors ideal Thorfin is now more like Thors

The end of this episode shows the absolute dichotomy of Canute and Thorfinn's ideologies. Thorfinn believes that violence must be the last option after trying everything else. Canute believes that violence is an unavoidable necessity in order to bring about change. Now Canute is forcing a test of Thorfinn's beliefs. Is it really necessary to kill Canute, or is there another answer to this dilemma?

Takemitchy - Tries his hardest toget hands and help and gets beat up in the process. Thorfinn - Does his hardest to not beat the everloving sh*t outta you by trying the talk no jutsu.

You can tell Thorfinn was listening to Snake read the Bible to Sverkel, he's putting that whole turn the other cheek theory into practice.

Next episode in my opinion will be legendary because " Then i, I will....." IM HYPED
