I don't understand, I grew up hearing these songs but I always attributed them to King Sunny Ade, it's like am just hearing the name Emperor Pick Peters for the first time
I just followed my Aunties to this parties with life music of Obey sunny and Peter. And our family likes them. Then I had no idea of what they were saying in their music! Now am good at understanding them and am now playing them and enjoying them My memories with my aunties who were The Who knows who Back then. Creating memories with my own family they like what kind of song is that? I say shut up! and dance with me. I know one day they too will appreciate as I have come to. God bless those who makes people happy. In this wicked world.
This beef was spectacular!! Between King Sunny Ade and The Emperor. Pure creative genius on both sides of the fight. Check out the proverbs, the insults, the comebacks, the invocations, the incantations all delivered with musical dexterity on top of first class guitar works and acoustics. And the talking drums!! O my God, who can ever forget the talking drums! Delivering a background backing of proverbs and insults and provocations in their own unique way. Truly, the Yoruba culture is great!!!
It was a triangle. Sunny Ade sang 'E kilo f'omo ode' and Dele Abiodun supported King Sunny while Pick Peters incurred the wrath of Sunny fans and never recovered. Dele Abiodun outlasted Pick Peters but Sunny continued many decades later. Chief Bolarinwa Abioro wanted to promote Peters as a replacement for Sunny in African Songs/TYC label after Sunny breached the contract and established Sunny Alade Records. Gani Fawehinmi got Sunny out of the legal tussle with a fine that was less than N1k as against N950k claimed by Chief Bolarinwa Abioro. The last time I visited Hotel Frontiere at Idiroko, where Peter had his gig, it was derelict. How time flies
So they now say because they are now older and more mature. Those who witnessed it say otherwise. Listen to Ekilo f’omo ode, then Omo ode de, then Abanije, then this song. The beef is clear. Good that it has now been resolved.
They were never friends. Dele Abiodun sided with Sunny Ade against Alhaji Bolarinwa Abioro of African Songs. Abioro signed Pick Peters as the next juju musician in his label when Sunny Ade breached his contract and released E kilo f’omo Ode under Sunny Alade Records. Pick Peter never got to the zenith. His star faded and he went into oblivion. The last time I was in Hotel Frontier at Idiroko, it had become a monument. This was where Pick Peters launched his album. Long after Pick P has faded, Sunny Ade reigned for at least three more decades.
that was in thing in his days. it was more a market gimmick employed by musicians of that period. they were always smiling to the bank. Remebersuuny/obey; barrister.kebe n kwara; salawa abeni and others too.
I disagree the hypothetical view that Emperor Pick Peters ran out of musical ammunition because he base his composition on abusive and unhealthy rivalry. I want you to go to his musical archive and pick one of his maiden records, you will agree with me that Emperor Peters is a composer and a gifted guitarist. That Baba called Abioro who nearly killed King sunny Ade vision killed Emperor Peters vision according to his statement in one of the Televised interviews.
