So used to seeing him talk about science, it's weird to see him talk about history and drawing squares rather than writing down formulas and assumptions of system conditions. Can the pax Romana be expressed by a sinusoidal function with the "good emperors being a phase shift of the Julio-Claidian emperors, and Caligula and Nero being minimums of the function? What's the amplitude of total deaths and frequency of the wars Khan?

I often imagine what would the Roman Empire be like today if it somehow made it all the way up to the present.

in many ways, the current western civilization can be considered as heirs to the roman civilization. So the roman empire would be the western hegemony today.

well, techically it does since Russia Empire considered themselves as Rome and today the Russian still use the same seal that was adopted from byzantine.

@@yuanzhou3368 Interesting, I always considered the Roman Empire to be long gone.
@yuanzhou3368
@yuanzhou3368 4 года назад
@@brfisher1123 It all depends on how do you define "gone". Tsar, or the Russian Emperor, literally means Caesar. After Constantinople, Orthodox people did consider Moscow as their third Rome. Most interesting thing is, Russia never stopped attempting to reconquer Istanbul. plus after USSR, everything is now back to Russia. So I guess Russia is the Today version of Rome LOL

Caligula was Augustus great-grandson, Claudius was his grand-nephew(his sisters grandson) and Nero his great-great-grandson.

They would likely never have offered, but if they did, Jesus would never have accepted. He always preferred living with the poor in society and was really humble.

This is like watching a Classics Comics version of history, except not as well done. Leaving aside more serious histories (it wouldn't take much), check out John Williams's Augustus (won the US National Book Award) and Marguerite Yourcenar's Memoirs of Hadrian. Both are historical fiction, but a good deal more interesting than this romp through dates. I decided to watch this series to see what the Kahn Academy is about, and with the intention, if I liked what I saw, of giving it money. If this is what the Kahn Academy is about, there isn't a chance of me contributing a nickel. I'm really surprised that Mr. Kahn is doing this series, that he has no apparent understanding of how weak it is, and that there aren't people around him who had the guts to say to him that it just isn't good enough, and, for that matter, that it's garbage.

Wait so the governor of judaea, a Jewish province in the Roman Empire, was ordered by Tiberius to crucify Jesus? I thought Judaea defied orders and Roman's wanted to use Jesus and his followers for their use. sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, I'm just a little confused.
@SuperMrGilles
@SuperMrGilles 7 лет назад
At that time Jesus was depicted as an ordinary criminal. It was only after Jesus' death rumors spread that "the so-called" king of the Jews, what Romans called him, was crucified. Tiberius did certainly not have any clue at that time that that man would become the most famous person in history... If there were something wrong, Pilatus would have gone to the gouvernor and not to the emperor that's for sure
@guardianangel325
@guardianangel325 7 лет назад
Ah that makes a lot more sense. Wouldn't want to bother the emperor for a petty criminal eh
@SuperMrGilles
@SuperMrGilles 7 лет назад
Jup you get it :) and certainly not Tiberius, who enjoyed the good-life in his private villa on Capri more than to govern properly haha
@Austin_Schulz
@Austin_Schulz 6 лет назад
Tiberius did not crucify Jesus. Proconsuls (in this case, Pontius Pilatus) are wholly responsible for dealing with crime and punishment in their respective provinces.

Jesus did not die on a cross. Morality is subjective.
@TempestTossedWaters
@TempestTossedWaters 7 лет назад
+truth1901 Religion is superstition from a time where people didn't know much about anything. Objective reality can inform moral values by telling which actions are likely to result in harm, benefit, or both and to whom.
@Liam8488
@Liam8488 7 лет назад
The issue with consequential morality is that because a benefit or result has a differing outcome to different people, it can in no way be considered universalized. I would advance that the point of philosophical morality is to universalize ethics to apply the same standards across as many people as possible. For example the abolition of slavery was the result of universalizing rights across people. To illustrate the value of universalization we can then apply what we learned to new moral problems. Our enfranchisement of blacks might lead us to conclude that it is similarly wrong to own Chinese slaves etc.
@TempestTossedWaters
@TempestTossedWaters 7 лет назад
Universalised is a confusing concept. There's no universal move in chess. Doesn't mean that chess doesn't have generally sound principles or an objective way of looking at it or that you need to be aware of the the objective reality of the pieces on the board to know what are good moves.
@Liam8488
@Liam8488 7 лет назад
Hannu Marijarvi Not to say that your analogy is perfect but chess does have universal rules across players, otherwise the game wouldn't make sense. Likewise, it is only fair that universal standards be applied to humans, for example it is always wrong to murder someone, no matter who it benefits, it is always wrong to enslave someone, etc.

What's doing Jesus in a video about history? It's a mythological character, there are no proofs he really existed. It's like mentioning the birth of Spiderman in the '60s.
