Man, it really was miraculous that the bridge of the Victory Dodonna was on just happened to be completely intact despite the entire ship blowing up around it. Or that he wasn't actually on it at the time instead being on the privy in the dedicated portaloo escape pod.
1:14:50 Need a reason why Dodonna is not in command? Say that Tarkin's political brownnosing finally lead him to be appointed to the head of the main fleet while Dodonna was put behind a desk 🙂 EDIT: If you go with an idea that Palpatine pushed for the offensive, then it could be said that the reason casulties were so high is because Palpatine was "cleaning house": most of the crew who took part in the battle had more loyalty to the principels of the Republic instead of its leader.
I do like the idea of a narrative around Dodonna being thrown behind a desk. Doesn't even have to be political, walking his fleet into a slaughter like that costing a bunch of Republic lives and resources he could be thrown in a desk just to put him out of the way for punishment.
Clearly the Senate would be howling mad over the huge material loss over Sullust. They lost a Praetor along with the fleet flagship! Someone has to take the political blame... and Dodonna is the scapegoat. This puts Tarkin -- a political favorite -- in command of the remnants of Dodonna's fleet. Also you should probably be saving ~2000 credits before the end of the week so you have some emergency funds for planet defenses.
So one thing to understand about how a unit of fighters is represented is that the health bar is more or less showing the average health of the entire unit. So when you see a unit of bombers randomly fluctuate between red, yellow and green it's because individual units that were lowering the average health are being destroyed. This is makes CIS fighter squadrons particularly hard to track progress on because they have several dozens of units per squad with small HP pools.
I am pretty sure the Performance issues EaW and specifically FotR is due to engine limitation. I remember reading somewhere about the engine not really working well is modern processors as it wasn't origninally designed with them in mind, specifically multithreading. Thats why it chugs when "thinking as it doesn't really take advantage of the hardware its on.
So, not to "rake you over the coals", but in the chaos you sent Dodonna into the fray, which is why he wasn't in back. Might not have made a difference, though. Just observing, not criticizing. I think you made the most of it, though. I guess the clones removed Dodonna from the bridge, maybe forcibly, so he could get to a pod? Also, Asokha is annoying in general, and I would probly "accidentally" get her killed, for reasons.
To fulfill the coal-raking, I think you probably could have made a deep strike with your fighter wings to knock out the shipyard at Sullust if nothing else. There's no way you get out of that fight without taking a battering, but it's worked before as you mentioned.
Hey, if Trench can survive a direct hit to the bridge by torpedoes, Dodonna can survive his ship going down, too. It also makes sense that, after the flagship went down, command fell apart, leading to higher casualties, which an ambitious officer (Say, Tarkin) could blame on Dodonna to get him relieved of command. It's funny, though, considering that, in Dodonna's first episode, the log talked about how "the attrition rate of Victory-class ships plummeted under his leadership", and his final battle is that meat-grinder. :P
Your frustrations with the game acting up and not running properly is the reason I'm watching this, instead of playing it myself. I thank you for your sacrifice.
I really wish you could change an admiral's flagship. Maybe handled like the recon ship is where it there's a slot that you assign a ship to. That way your early admirals don't get screwed by not being able to have the staying power to still be in a late game fleet without being a total liability. I like the risk that the admiral can die, but not that you have to babysit them constantly.
I would like to think that the republic think that Dadona died at sullest, just for him to come back like a Phoenix years later during the galactic civil war. How that would work I have know idea but hey it’s crazier things have happened in the Star Wars universe, right😅
I had thought this campaign almost over, considering the volume of leader units destroyed and the outer rim you’ve conquered. But after that tour of the north of the map I’m no longer sure. Cheers Dave, love this series.
I was excited to see the (Phyrric) Victory Horde in action, and I was not disappointed by the results. 😁 Farewell you glorious bastards, tonight you dine in -Hell- Sullust!
Given the delay on those missiles it might be prudent for victory ships to target different ships, that way they don't all fire on the same exact hardpoints. 2 victories attacking 1 ship at a time might actually destroy a fleet faster that way, and reduce incoming dame since you'd be taking out more hardpoints per minute. Granted maybe 8 victories would blow up one ship faster, but like 5 of them are just firing redundancies. Plus, it's not to micro intensive; just attack the ships separately and let the victories auto-attack whatever hardpoint.
One trick you can do to force superships with tons of guns or large groups of ships to spread their damage out across hard points without assigning tons of individual orders, is just wildly click all over the target so they're constantly switching hardpoints. Still a bit annoying to do, so I only resort to it if I'm concerned about the outcome.
Probably already been mentioned but bearing in mind your frustrations with the cinematic cam, there is the alternative of pressing the C key when an individual land or space unit is selected. Gives you cinematic cam centred round that unit and can control the zoom and rotation with the mouse during it
Death at Druckenwell, Slaughter at Sullust, Massacre at Mustafar, F-up at Fondor? Don't intend to backseatgame, but I really wonder what the best way to deal with those huge blobs of fighters is? I've recently reinstalled EaW myself. Playthroughs that give you the urge to pick up the game again yourself to try your hand are the very best!
I always thought an asymmetrical strategy game based on the clone wars where the republic was controlled in small squads like xcom, and the seperatists were controlled in full units like total war would be epic. really just making the two sides feel very different would be a blast in general. it always seemed off to me that b1’s are often used as an equivocal of a basic clone trooper, when I think the real interesting thing about the clone wars as a conflict is the asymmetry. the republic has a decent amount of fairly versitile units in the clone troopers, while the CIS have hoards of pretty poor quality units in b1s, and a number of very specialized, but not all that versatile units in the other droid units. it just seems like a great dynamic to exploit for asymmetric gameplay.
Area in the Galactic Northeast is known at the time as "The Foundry of the Confederacy" and where the Outer Rim Sieges really took off close to the end of the war. Might be a good place to hit last along with maybe Ciutric if you are going down the path I think you are ;)
i took sullest with waves of acclamators. I would drop them in, push the fighters to attack the shipyards and retreat. With a few waves, the fighter spam gets less severe.
I doubt that the deaths of important characters are carried over into other mods. So, would Dodonna reappear, alive and well, in Awakening of the Rebellion? Or are the admirals that have died so far forever dead, regardless?
You're not wrong about the bombers, a bomber is sth heavy, lumbering and designated to a specific duty of dropping a payload, that's why they must have escort interceptors and has a lot of defence guns. But of course this is fiction and star wars so rules in this universe... Is exactly the same lol look at the asskicking they receive in ep 7. So both gaming-wise, logically, historically and even canonically they should get their asses kicked easily.
When/if you get to Thrawn's Revenge are you looking at adding the mod maker's addon to reenable shield piercing torpedoes? I remember you said that bothered you. There's one for Fall of the Republic as well but I don't know if you can add it after starting.
A costly victory means the senate is howling for more ships! More Blood! More Clones! As Palpatine sits in his office with a smile. Spoilers below * * * * I like the idea someone else had of Dodonna isn't dead, but he's been relagated to desk duty as Palpatine puts his faves into positions of power to support his upcoming powergrab and he knows Dodonna isn't loyal to him.
