Since starting Social Bite almost 3 years ago, they have had to learn the hard way that simply giving a homeless person an income, or providing food is not enough to fix the deep rooted problem of homelessness. Alice will be focusing on the lessons they have had to learn quickly in order to achieve Social Bite's dream of eradicating homelessness wherever they have a presence.
Alice is the co-founder of Social Bite - a Scottish based sandwich shop chain that operates as a social business, employing formerly homeless people as a quarter of their staff and donating 100% of its profits to charity.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Employing them is not enough. You also have to house them too. I've met employers that claim they tried to hire homeless guys off the street. When asked if they put them up anywhere, they said "no, I'm not a charity!" Well why would you expect someone to work a job all day only for them to go and sleep on cold, hard concrete? How can you expect them to do anything if they can't sleep and still have no access to basic hygiene? Housing has to come first.

Thank you! Just as a wee FYI, we actually housed over 800 people using the Housing First model pioneered nation wide in Finland. It provides a permanent home for people with wrap-around, individualised support and uses a psychological approach called strength-based recovery. We also built a "Social Bite Village" which houses up to 20 residents at a time to offer an alternative to the temporary housing model. Social Bite are now raising money to build a second village too.

Do the money addicted gentrifiers have a time frame for when rents will be ten to twenty grand a month? And will that be enough to satisfy their addiction to money?

Most if the homeless were productive, tax paying members of society. I don't understand why people assume otherwise.
