Great design by D in the video as they dropped the DE

Genuinely terrific video! Absolutely great explanation methodology - couldn't have higher praise for this. Instant subscription as this is really invaluable as OL play really is the basis for nearly everything within a game - as without it not much else matters. Is confounding to me that while there's no shortage of talking head opinion/fake argument videos, this type of expert explanation of fundamental but often misunderstood core aspects of the game are very hard to find. Geoff, much thanks for taking the time to craft a terrific & genuinely 'best of type video', look forward to more of your excellent work. From Coffs Harbour, Australia.

This is great! I love the mix of board and film. I've been following NFL for around 8 years but I only really started looking in to tactics etc... recently and this is so helpful. So simply explained. Subscribed!

Love the content Geoff. Thanks. Keep up the great work. Also like the new "digital whiteboard" better, that was great change.

Great video Jeff. Was helpful to see it drawn out, then see actual game film. Hoping you make more of these videos explaining offensive line play. Two suggestions, simplify your terminology (Explain things like what a jelly set is) and could use a better ending. Thanks!

Is there a reason they wouldn't slide to the blind side? I'm a novice but I feel it would make more sense to leave the unblocked defender in the QB's line of vision.

What was that term you used a couple times? Jelly set? I never played, so I'm playing catch up with terminology.

Sam Top Jelly set was a new term for me as well. This doesn’t use all the same wording, but if you’re interested in O line play, this is something to check out: smartfootball.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/LARRY-ZERLIEN-PASS-PRO.pdf It’s an (older) pdf that breaks down how to pass protect, but more on an individual level, so combined with Geoff’s team-scheme work here, creates a good picture I think.

You can tell an Olineman chose this clip, because the line is mostly doing its job (the LG messes up but it doesn't affect the play too much) but the QB isn't paying attention and gets decked. Not the line's fault!

Thanks for this Geoff. I look forward to more of these in the future! This might be a stupid question but how does this type of protection deal with pressure from more than 6 defenders? Do they still just identify the 6 biggest risks?
@geoffschwartz1569
@geoffschwartz1569 4 года назад
defenses can't bring 7 rushers with 5 blockers. You'd leave a WR uncovered

What's the QB's play here? Is he supposed to read the RE or is his job to continue through his progression?

On your jelly set, your decision tree looks like it boils down to: 1. Playside gap, or any player that enters it at any time 2. Man on, then slide to anybody entering playside gap, trust that the man next to you sees the need to slide 3. Man to the outside if 1 or 2 dont happen Looks really similar to the ISO run blocking rules.
@geoffschwartz1569
@geoffschwartz1569 4 года назад
I've never used man on, man outside, etc... rules before. My brain doesn't like to process things that way. That's why I like rules more than man on, man outside. That's sort of guessing if someone is in the right spot.

For the slide side, did you guys ever make a "pair" call to account to blitz? Say the S blitzes most likely the M would have to push out to cover that slot receiver. Just a way to reduce throwing hot all the time.
@DBroncs

Against this defensive alignment, would the offense "identifying the Mike" suggest where the protection was sliding? I.e. the backer on the offense's right side would be the Mike?
@geoffschwartz1569
@geoffschwartz1569 4 года назад
in pass pro, you typically ID the backer you're working to, which can be the Will or the Mike. In the run game, you ID the M first and then everything else can be set up after that

What are the rules for the direction off the slide? Do teams always slide right in empty? Or do some teams slide based on which side the shade is on?

So was the QB going to get killed no matter what or should he have been paying attention to the DE?
@MrTevens
@MrTevens 4 года назад
Yeah I'm a little confused as well, was he supposed to check to a different play call pre snap? Or was he supposed to be looking left instead of right at the snap so he could know if he had to throw hot or step up in the pocket?
@richardkusistoii9727
@richardkusistoii9727 4 года назад
I would have liked to see the QB check the side to the field. That way the RT=LE, RG=3 tech and those 2 would be in a sift for the W. Once the DE drops out the RT would bump the RG down to the blitzing LB. As for left side LT would set the RE, LG would set the ID or M. The C would set the shade. With the Shade slanting to the RG he would take him and the LG eyes on the LB would cause him to Bump the C to the Blitzing M. But it is easy to say all for this post snap

if they teach the Lt to stay with his end, would the interior be taught to shift left since the RE backs out?
