Empty Tank at 41,000 Feet, So Pilots Did This

Imagine, you’re driving on a long stretch of highway when you run out of gas. This is not a good situation, but it's not critical. Now imagine the same scenario, only you’re a pilot flying a commercial jet full of people! That’s exactly what happened to a Canadian plane at a height of 41,000 feet...

Music by Epidemic Sound www.epidemicsound.com/
SUMMARY:
- The plane seemed to be having problems with the computer that manages fuel loading. Since it wasn’t working properly, the ground maintenance crew just calculated the necessary amount of fuel on their own.
- Both the ground crew in Montreal and the flight crew had forgotten the fact that at the time, Canada was switching from the imperial system of measurement to metric. That's why all of Air Canada’s new planes were calibrated in metric units.
- The plane was at a height of 41,000 feet when the first warning light flared up. The crew figured that the fuel pump in the left wing had failed, so they switched it off. However, a few minutes later, the second light came on.
- The pilots desperately searched through the manuals to figure out how to deal with such an emergency. Unfortunately, there were no instructions on what to do if both engines are out.
- But the most serious problem was the loss of hydraulic pressure. A pilot’s ability to control the aircraft decreases along with a drop in hydraulic pressure.
- Maurice Quintal thought of the nearby Royal Canadian Air Force Base just 12 miles away in the town of Gimli. Even better, it was no longer in use!
- But the pilots still weren't aware of the most terrifying thing about this situation. That abandoned military base wasn’t just sitting there empty and derelict - it’d been converted into a motorsports park and racetrack!
- The people on the runaway didn't expect to see a gigantic plane approaching them at high speed. But hey saw it coming and got out of the way in time.
- The whole incident was dubbed The Gimli Glider. And after receiving some heat from the airline for that initial fuel miscalculation, both pilots ended up receiving the Diploma for Outstanding Airmanship in 1985.

However Canadians were so happy no one died that they insisted on awards and a parade. That pilot came within one gust of wind of decapitating mothers and babies. Hundreds of them.

I am the mechanic in Winnipeg that took the radio call for help. After a quick review of fuel pressure indications . I asked where he was. "Over Red Lake he said" I told them the engines would be shutting down shortly , you will be gliding. It's unlikely you could make it to Winnipeg but there was an abandoned runway in Gimly mb. The adjacent runway was being used for drag racing . The aircraft made a perfect landing and as luck would have it, the nose collapsed on the center runway guardrail guiding it to a safe friction stop . We flew in the next day in a Cherokee 140. It was a an amazing feat . Winnipeg tower and the RCMP were notified of this emergency. No one knew what should be done. Possibly didn't believe it was happening. Emergency measures were implimented the next year across the country. ..the reason gear collapsed was the emergency prop generator was not delivering enough hydraulic pressure ( hydraulic locked between up an down lock.). Had they selected selector off it would have spring loaded down and locked. A blessing in disguise , they wouldn't have had enough brake to stop it. The guard rail did that. People running, give it a rest already

The nose gear never locked when the landing gears were deployed, which was advantageous to everyone, that's why the 767 was able to stop a short distance away from the crowds up ahead. I've been watching lots of airplane crash videos here on RU-vid. Although I know these are the exceptions and don't happen much, I don't like how scary the cockpit conversations sounded. Some of the captains that even had 15,000 hours flying experience and many years they've flown, they still took guesses if they couldn't see where the runway was causing an explosion or fatal crash. I'm sure that by far most pilots will be just fine but I wonder if I would want to hear their discussions or not. 😳

For those wondering, the ram air turbine (RAT) is actually a small wind turbine that deploys automatically when both engines fail and it is located inside the fuselage on most aircraft. it is not a part of the engines (which the video's animations might have led you to believe). It works by using aerodynamic forces to generate electricity needed to power the hydraulic pumps and also power critical flight instrumentation like the airspeed and altitude indicators. In the video it is mentioned that it produces less power the lower the airspeed, this is simply because there are less aerodynamic forces spinning the turbine which results in less electrical energy produced.

1. The engineers do not calculate how much fuel needed for the flight, the pilots do. 2. The pilots are put through a double engine failure on a simulator before they are allowed to fly the real thing. So they will know what to do. 3. An aircraft dose not need any of its engines to function once it is airborne because it can glide, also having a APU ( auxiliary power unit) onboard supplying all necessary power to any electronic systems. 4. What your calling a forward slip is actually Called crabbing.

I was onboard a twin engine Eastern AirlinesTurbo Prop in June 1967 going from Louisville to Washington D.C. in a lightning and rain storm. I was sitting next to the window just aft of the starboard wing when a bolt of lightening struck the wing about 3 - 4 ft inboard of the engine. After a moment the pilot came up on the intercom and assured us that it wears a one in a million odds of happening and not to worry! He had barely stopped talking when a second bolt of lightening hit the wing about 2 feet from the first strike. We never heard another word from the Pilot.

There is a back power supply called a "auxiliary power unit" (APU) on jets nowadays. Its a small wind turbine that comes out at the tail of a plane. It generates enough power to keep vital instruments and lights on. The 1st thing Sully did when he lost power after the bird strike was to turn on APU
@samjackson3078
@samjackson3078 5 лет назад
Martin hey, the APU is actually for power on the ground. Sully did use it, however it’s a small turbine jet engine burning fuel and is in the tail. The RAT, ram air turbine is a mini propellor that comes out the fuselage and works just like a wind turbine to provide electricity. I think you’ve kind of combined the two
