Back in the dark ages (early 1960's) my cub scout den mother lived right in front of the driveway to our new (at the time) waste treatment plant and arranged for us to take a field trip to see how things worked. The manager was very nice to us and showed us how everything flowed into, was processed and discharged to the local reservoir. By todays standards it was very primitive and we had a MAJOR PROBLEM with phosphates causing major algae problems. The plant has since been upgraded and expanded several times, but I am unsure if they still use the "combined" storm water and sewage lines (they did in 1960 when it was built) and heavy rains would cause the manhole covers to pop up and dance around much to the delight of us kids riding the school bus. It would be great if you could get permission form one of your local treatment plants to film a tour. There are a lot of videos of treatment plants from small to YUGE and they are all fascinating to watch.

Chance is that they still use combined sewage and storm, they can't upgrade the whole city and every houses quickly. So what they tend to do is to split it when they redo the infrastructure. This is required because, well, they have to replace the pipes and install a second set. Now, all the houses still combine, but they bring the new pipes to each houses. Now when they have to redo their house plumbing they now have to split. So chance is that it will take like a hundred years before all is upgraded. But better start very slowly than not start at all.

One of my hats I wore before I retired was waste water operator. Waste water treatment depends on bacteria, living organisms. You stress them just right to make them do what you want. This is a complicated balance and highly technical. Most operators are proud of their plants and will give tours. But stay with your guide, waster water treatment facilities are dangerous places.

Modern treatment plants are amazing. After the bar screening, sand and grit are removed. Then a mix of aerobic and anaerobic processes, settling and filtering are used. The nitrates, phosphate and dissolved salts are removed by microbes which settle out.

When I was working, our company worked in many Water Reclamation plants in California . What we did was install aeration blowers and code generation engines and piping . The things we saw at these plants would blow your mind . A plant in San Clemente California had the best looking tomatoes and cantaloupe growing right next to the inlet piping from the city . It doesn't matter where seeds go, they will grow. Hahaha at most plants, we would see crows sitting on the sweepers picking out condoms and other items in laying them across the sweepers. Why they do that I don't know.😂😂😂 the other thing, you are so right when you say smells like money. Have a safe New Year my friend

I enjoyed this behind the scenes video. This reveals how unfriendly those wipes really are to our septic/sewage systems. The toilet or hose bidets seem much more friendly than wipes and toilet paper. I wonder if the overall environmental and cost burden of the impact on TP, production through disposal is compared to the extra water consumption of bidets. I suspect if we had a butt-wipe free world and “wiped” with water instead, it would have a better environmental impact. It takes a lot of water simply to remove or disintegrate those wipes anyway. As for bidets, I like the sprayer type hose that hangs from the side of a toilet, compared to the bidet seats that spray you. I first saw the toilet + sprayer combos in Thailand because they couldn’t flush toilet paper in many (most?) parts of the country. If your hands and poo on them, would you wipe them with paper, or use water to get them clean. Even without soap, which would make your hands cleaner? If people can have cleaner butts, fewer hemorrhoids, less paper production, less paper waste and a minimized environmental impact of waste water which is more efficient to treat??? I don’t know the answer, I only have hunches. I enjoy this channel because Dom shares the reality of the lifecycle of our wastewater. I’m learning how to make better personal choices when Dom shows us the crust layer. This channel has great content!
