Please explain about monomer pooling which only ocuurs at the start of introducing pre-emulsion monomer into the reactor. It is surprising that it only occures when the reactor has been cleaned with NaOH solution and washed with water.

For that much oil, i would use a water in oil (w/o) emulsifier though.

Why oil and water seperate after some hours

Thank you for your question! Well, because they are not compatible so if nothing can keep them together (i.e surfactant), they would separate. Mind you that even after the addition of surfactants or the emulsifying agents, they might separate and more details are mentioned in the instability of emulsions video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9GBSDwXc50M.html

What was the answer please?

Hey Brandon, Thank you so much for asking. Well, for w/o emulsions the surfactants would orient such that their hydrophilic heads are within the water droplets (the internal phase) and their hydrophobic tails are towards the external phase, the oil. Imagine having too many tails surrounding the droplets of the water throughout the oil. At a point there will mechanical hindrance because of the presence of the bulky tails.. Check the first figure here to see the orientation of surfactants in both emulsion types and relate to the point stated above: statics.scnu.edu.cn/pics/aoe/2014/0508/20140508114934248.pdf Hope this helps, if you need further clarification, kindly let us know and don’t forget to stay Fab 😃
