@@JackReacts904 Music from 70s/80s/90s was much more daring and musical than music nowadays. I could be biased as I was born in '81 but music nowadays just doesn't give me the feels like music from these days. I just find everyone so vanilla and meh.
@@JackReacts904 Welcome to the 90s. Envogue, Xscape, TLC, and SWV dominated R&B and Hip Hop in the early 90s. Please react to Free Your Mind by Envogue?
All due respect, bro...It was right on time back then...it just goes to show you that we are still fighting the same battles we had back then. This song is timeless. Whatever time period you play this song in, it will be right on time.
Fun Fact: They're singing Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "Who's Lovin' You" in the beginning :). That song's been covered by many groups and solo singers, including The Temptations, The Supremes, The Jackson 5 (their version is touted as the most famous, with an 11-year-old MJ on the lead vocals), and Lauryn Hill at age 13 (she sang it for the notoriously picky Apollo crowd, and they booed her at first but she continued and eventually got a standing ovation
Destiny’s Child were very heavily influenced by En Vogue, as evidenced by that triplet synchopated phrasing, the heavy R&B hip hop beats. This was the tail end of New Jack Swing, groups like them and BBD were pushing the sound forward.
@@noelanivelez5299 the op said EnVogue predate the other main girl groups that were popular in the 90's and the foundation of 90's female r&b sound. The Supremes were a soul music girl group from the 60's & 70's. They set the tone for girl groups BUT, as far as r&b girl groups go, EnVogue set the the standard for the 90's female girl groups in particular.
There will never be a female vocal group like En Vogue again. One of the only groups that could all sing lead. Also we all had a crush on En vogue. All very very beautiful indeed😍
I love this song! You have to do En Vogue "My Loving You're Never Gonna Get It" and "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and "Free Your Mind". All ICONIC
The intro to the accapella part of the debut song "Hold On" is sung by Terry Ellis. The uptempo of this song was sung by Cindy Herron with back up vocals of Maxine Jones, Dawn Robinson and Terry Ellis. En Vogue are the gold standard of the perfect four point harmonies.
he was in janet's love will never do without you video the same year lol and he was on the pilot episode of 90210 in the same year as well...djimon was everywhere in 1990
These were the days when you had to be exceptional to be really successful in music. Either you were an incredible vocalist, or writer or dancer/performer or all of the above. This is what I don't like about auto tune. They can create a career around the least talented people and it gives everybody the same soulless, generic sound.
You are absolutely right. Every one in this group can sing lead. “Giving Him Something He Can Feel”, “Never Gonna Get It”, and “Whatta Man” are some of their staples. When you can, please check out (no need to make a video if you don’t want lol) their rendition of The National Anthem. They’re wearing black suits. Derek Jeter was SHOOK!
This song was a huge club hit at the time. Other female groups who had amazing vocals in the 1990s were: Brownstone - Grapevyne, If you love me, 5 miles to empty.Jade - Don't walk away.
Jack. You're very perceptive. It WAS 2 songs melded into 1. The beginning is a cover of the Jackson 5 hit "WHO'S LOVING YOU" (actually others have done it, but their version is the first that came to mind. Look it up, you'll enjoy seeing "little MJ" killing it with the ad libs.
@@JackReacts904 Who's living you is a song by The Miracles, written by Smokey Robinson who was like family to Michael Jackson. The Jackson 5 covered it in 1969 and Smokey Robinson had said ever since that the J5 version is better than his and that Michael's vocals were amazing as he sang with the soul of a 45 year old, but he was only 10/11 ❤️
En Vogue Vocals is breathtaking! I just recently watch them perform a live version of this while in quarantine. They still got it! Jack if you have any free time you should watch it.
One out of three #2 singles they had. It's a crime they never went #1 with a song. The sample is from James Brown's "The Payback". Fun Fact: they used this sample again on their other hit "My Lovin".
The year was 1989 when this Gem dropped. I remember seeing the video first and was HOOKED and like overnight they were STARS and so were those little black dresses because dress sales went up 200% please believe me. Radio exploded when this joint dropped and the rest was history they are famous for bringing back the girl group because at that time no one was checking for girl groups and that is WHY til this day EnVogue is so highly regarded and respected for bringing the LOVE for girl groups. ENVOGUE is LEGENDARY, ICONIC, TRENDSETTERS & FASHIONISTAS. Their vocal game is UNMATCHED!!!
I was just watching some En Vogue videos before I came across yours. They are the first black/brown American girl group of the early 90s era/generation. I remember exactly when En Vogue came out. Picture it: Summer of 1990. I still remember the name of the street I lived on, nine Lewis St. I was either in elementary or junior high. *"Hold On"* was and still is their number one hit/single. They're not called the *Funky Divas* for nothing. *Their live performance* of *"Hold On"* is off the hook. I still have their first behind the scenes on VHS. I could go on about those women.
Beyonce always said Destiny´s Child was most inspired by En Vogue. They even shared the same vocal coach. Beyonce´s creative director from her early solo career, Frank Gatson Jr., choreographed a lot of En Vogues performances and videos. React to En Vogue Free Your Mjnd next.
Actually LL sampled them. "Hold On" came out before the "Booming System", although both came outing 1990 (it messed me up happily when picking up on it and made me aware of concept of the sample)..
Young man you have no idea. This was En Vogue's first hit. I live in the area where the group got their start. Like the song says morning, noon and night that song was on rotation on the radio here. And of course as you now know they all can sing.
This brings back memories from when I was high school in the early 90's, En Vogue was very big at that time, .All four of them were beautiful and classy women
En vogue were ground breaking in 1990 fusing RnB with hip hop beat, then came TLC with their fun RnB style, then SWV with their angelic youthful harmonies. They were the first pioneers of RnB girl groups. The top3 of all time in the 90s.
@@JackReacts904 classic film that shows you Pacs transition into stardom but a psychotic character that seemed to stay on him a lil bit (as far as film roles some even say music wise) despite the characters he played in poetic justice and gridlock
When I was younger.....Wooooooo these ladies brought the class and the kick ass!!!! My friends and I did this song in our talent show in high school. We tried to pay homage but nahhhh they had too much talent for us! We thought we did the damn thang though.
As you already noted, all members could sing lead and carry the group. It seems Cindy (singing lead on this track) and Terry (the acapella) shined in lead roles on the group's debut album. On the second album, Dawn and Maxine sang lead mostly. I have a feeling you will really enjoy "My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It). Maxine and Dawn popped off on that one!
There is so much En Vogue to explore, Jack. Top 5: Waiting on You, Free Your Mind, Giving Him Something He Can Feel, Just Can't Stay Away, and Runaway Love
Tonight has been ladies night! The beginning sounds like if birds could sing that how they would sound. Just melodic, no excessive runs. Perfect. RIP LITTLE RICHARD RIP ANDRE HARRELL
I know you like a good message, fire vocals, and rocking music. So gotta hit that En Vogue's "Free Your Mind". You should try Salt n Pepa "Whatta Man", they're featured on the chorus on that song. I think you'd really like that song period because it's good...
I told you they were the TRUTH!!!! You likely will not find a clip of them anywhere NOT with perfect harmony!!! You should listen to "Don't Go" and their cover of Aretha's "Giving Him Something He can Feel."
Specifically, I recommend the following: Sweet Love by Anita Baker Ain't nobody, through the fire, and tell me something good by Chaka Khan Hang on to your love, sweet operator, no ordinary love, your love is king, somebody already broke my heart, and your love is king by Sade
@Jack Reacts you HAVE TO react to them singing the national anthem or them singing their song called “Don’t Go” ( not to be confused with Don’t Let Go) 💓 their the best girl group ever !!!!
This was such a monster hit back in the day, Jack! You just don't know, lol. When this song dropped we all knew these girls were gonna be super-duper stars! This was En Vogue's very first single. And yes, Cindy Herron is so, so, so, so fine. I don't know if you ever watched the movie "Juice" starring Tupac Shakur and Omar Epps, but Cindy had a key role in that movie (as the main character Q's [Epps] love interest). If you haven't seen that movie, I highly suggest you do. Great performance by Tupac Shakur as the villain of the story.
Pharrell Williams sampled this song on Jay -Z's song Blue Magic in which Pharrell is also featured on the song. React to this one day. Fun fact: En Vogue sung the original theme song to the classic TV show Hangin WIth Mr. Cooper.
My Lovin Your Never Gonna Get It, Give It Up, Turn It Loose, Runaway Love, Don't Go. The original En Vogue line up is special. But their song Rocket is great also with their 3 lady lineup. You need to react to all the songs I mentioned.
I love that you singled out the triplet flow (Cindy is fire with that stuff!) right after recognising how fine she is 😂 Straight facts lol. Also their looks were so iconic some of their dresses are in the Smithsonian!
I could watch this video over and over, swingin them hips side to side. Lawd!!!! And yes, the groove of the song, and thier spectacular voice were on point!!
Their debut was amazing. Check out Ryan Duartes "You" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-74qm5I8H2IA.html Its from the early 2000's. Amazing song that was a hit that nobody remembers! You would love it bro 🔥🔥
5:33 I think every man and and teenage boy at the time was "feeling some type of way" which had nothing to do with the song while watching En Vogue. Great song and great reaction!
