This week, the frequent Folger director Richard Clifford and celebrated actor Sir Derek Jacobi introduce an evening of Henry Purcell's "The Fairy Queen," the first of a number of extraordinary performances of early music combined with Shakespeare’s word produced by Folger Consort. Here, in 2007, the wonderful acting trio, featuring the extraordinary Lynn Redgrave, Jacobi, and Clifford, bring the hilarity of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to the elegance of Purcell’s music.
Purcell’s 1692 semi-opera is performed by baroque orchestra, chorus, and stellar soloists, including tenor Mark Bleeke, heard here. Following packed performances in the Folger’s Elizabethan Theatre, the artists did a final sold-out performance in the 1800-seat concert hall at Strathmore. Later memorable collaborations saw Jacobi and Clifford and other actors on stage with Folger Consort-touring to California, to New York, and to Shakespeare’s Globe in London-with words of other Shakespeare plays and music of other early composers.
