May I ask you something, Morgan? After a year, how does your board fared against wood movement? A nephew of mine have a cracked chess board and I was looking for a way other woodworkers were building theirs, to find out a way to avoid cracks in the sideboards.

So far it's held up very well with no cracking. The most important thing is to account for alot of expansion on all sides, that's the annoying part about endgrain is it expands and contracts alot more than a flat piece of wood.

Beautiful piece - the stippling really added some great character! Would like to make one myself in the future. Q: is expansion of the end grain board within the frame of any concern?

I've had the board sitting in my house for a few months now and it has contracted slightly leaving a small gap. Since I built it near the end of the summer it should've been at it's maximum expansion when I fit up the frame. Honestly I'm not sure what's going to happen next summer when the board expands but whatever happens will be a good learning opportunity.
