We visit the empty shopping center at San Mateo & Zuni. The majority of storefronts have been empty for years. At least two buildings have been vacant for 20 years or more. Decades of bad behavior plus the now-closed Walmart across the street killed business entirely. Now the area will further be a haven for smoke shops, tattoo parlors, payday loan stores and illicit activity. It is already a pickup/dropoff point for the city's infamous westside homeless shelter. A location most homeless choose to avoid. Decades of disinvestment, politics and apathy have turned this area into a spot where no one wants to open essential businesses like supermarkets, laundromats and drugstores. Residents now have to take 2-3 buses to buy groceries at supermarkets 6 miles away. We will return for Part 3.
