Union transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the government is ending the current tolling system on highways, and satellite based toll collection will be introduced soon. This will first be implemented on select sections of national highways for testing. But how exactly will this system work, when will it be implemented and how's it different from the FASTags that are already being used? Watch!

This is much needed. I travel 10 km, crossing a toll, whereas my friend travels 50 km through the same toll. Why should I pay the same amount as my friend? This system would hopefully minimize the discrepancy.

This is an absolutely splendid initiative. The Indian government should collect tolls with GPS information and monitor cars for speeding. Speeding cars should be charged more based on how long they are speeding and how much they are over the speed limit. This will make the Indian highways a lot safer to drive. If this system is launched, it will be the first one in the world. India can sell this system to other countries. Just like UPI, the Highway Toll System (HPS) will be successful.

GPS is never fraud my guy 😂 All our phones have GPS and don't confuse that with location toggle on screen, that is only for your convenience & google. The GPS is always ON and connects directly to satellite even though you don't have network on mobile, as long as the phone is switching on your GPS is on. It doesn't require mobile data to work.

I use lineageos on my smart phone and Debian/Linux on my laptop. None of my private data is being collected.... I don't mindlessly click agree to any apps or services. That argument of "stop using smart devices" is absolutely idiotic. Also with those smart devices which do collect data, usage of the device is optional, not forced onto you by some corrupt government!

@@PSP-lr7ms haha experts make rule but we have to suffer them. In theory fastag is very reliable and fast but in reality many times it causes delay too. And we have to suffer delays. If we are at fault we have to pay double but if problem is from other side they don't compensate. GPS system l won't stop you and -ve balance will pile up quickly laying additional burden on already overtaxed citizens. This is big issue for commuters in UK as well where they use GPS toll

If our fastag has low balance we have to pay double no matter what without fail but if there is issue at toll and we have to wait longer we are rarely compensated. FastTag is already fast enough. Don’t know how justifiable will it be to use satellites for toll collection. More automation at the toll gates and higher penalties for offenders are a better idea. Unfortunately, they don’t sound as cool.

Great initiative sir. Few questions, many people don't have proper number plate or at times not having number plate, or having wrong plate, they will save on toll? If you don't keep money in the bank account linked to the GPS, then what will happen? And some vehicles if excluded from toll now, how they will be excluded in new system.

This is already implemented in UK. Here you don't have to link your bank account also, you get 1 day to go to website and pay the toll, After each day the toll gets multiple of number of days X1 X2 X3 .... Linking of bank account is also possible for regular users

With increasing toll taxes and increasing excise duty on fuel india is going to become a country with high input cost on farming, transportation and manufacturing. Increasing Toll tax and Excise duty on fuel is going became a major factor in the inflation. Increase of toll tax and excise duty is going to increase in transportation cost of good per ton per km. Increase excise duty on fuel is also going to increase in the input cost of farm machinery used for farming. Fuel cost per acre of land is going to increase.

I support this move 100% and I wanted to become slave of Govt to serve my duty as a good slave citizen, I will be tracked easily for their political benefits, but my theft car complaint will drag on for years such that no insurance will be paid for atleast couple of years, thanks to 10+% of inflation eroding my slave wages. I will not have any savings, will be living on loans such that I will buy more goods that has crazy GST, buy iphone, buy car, buy more petrol fill more treasury to my GOVT. Be a good citizen!

Don't understand one side it says GPS and other side it says your number plate pic is taken by camera, when camera is there, then GPS doesn't come into picture at all. In GPS system and receiver will be installed in the car whose coordinates can be used to get the distance travelled.

So youre saying that, govt will track the vehicles in real time, at all times. Isnt this an intrusion of privacy? Before, number plates and identity details were not collected. The vehicle pays the toll as it passes thru. Secondly, any amount can get deducted from the account, n the payer does not really have any greivance mechamism. Atleast in toll booth, the user knows how much he is paying.

I have seen people covering numbers in number plates to avoid traffic violations. If they do same tactic here, the caners will read a wrong number and the money will be deducted from someone’s else account that will be linked. This is very difficult to implement in a country like ours

It is a Toll Tag-based system wherein either vehicle has to place the tag on their windshields which will have an online account to renew the money used for toll or your number plates will be read by scanners and a toll receipt would be sent to the registered address for the plate. Would be interesting to see how India will make it function, especially for plates/people who will ignore the toll receipts. Not sure if every number plate owner has the correct address updated to the RTO office to link the scanner with the RTO information. Kuddo's if it works will help to eliminate the non-toll payers.

This has nothing to do with GPS, its a camera based system for road Toll rather than fast tag (far efficient technique, but has its pitfalls). If you adopt satellite/GPS based system then each vehicle will need to have a inbuilt unit which is not possible and if at all there will be a unit installed on a vehicle it should be working condition.

I have noticed people who refuse to pay tolls, argue and show ID cards are allowed to pass through free once 10 to 15 cars pile up behind them. The toll operator manually override the system and allow them to pass. These people repeatedly do this and were well know that delaying other vehicles will call more issues to the toll operators.

Don’t think FASTag has reduced time by almost 90% as mentioned (12 mins to 47 secs). The process of stopping the car, manning the toll booth, ensuring collection from each vehicle by stop-start method are very much in existent similar to earlier days of cash collection. Only thing replaced is instead of cash and waiting for change etc, money is deducted electronically so probably time has reduced by half but no way by 90%. The biggest advantage of fastag is reduction in corruption as money gets deposited directly in BOT accounts so it can be easily be accounted for.

Gadkari ji what happened to stopping toll collection after recovering the amount for maintenance of highways? So with this new idea it is permanent toll collection. There is nothing innovative with using GPS. We still have old cars or trucks who don't have GPS. How will you handle them? Even in America they don't have GPS based toll collection. Faster RFID readers than what we have are used. Using Indian GAGAN is not precise in identifying loction. Improvement of quality of highways and educating truck drivers to follow lanes principle (most long trucks are on right lane) should be high priorities. We have 98% Fastag compliance in current model.

If you have electricity at home there will be a certain amount which is taken regardless of you using appliances. Same principle will be applied in this scheme even if you use your car or not there will be a fixed amount which will be deducted or else it will be a loss making scheme. @@internethacks206 Once deducted, who has got the patience to dispute on wrong debits and what are the means to claim, it's yet not clear. Already many roads have reached break-even, still the same amount is collected just for it's maintenance. If they give the contracts to L&T they build robust n no-maintenance roads for 10-15 yrs. Hope I've clarified the reason for my nightmare 😀
