Sometimes, a particle that the cell needs to bring in is too big to pass through the membrane. In such cases, the cell can do ENDOCYTOSIS. During endocytosis, the cell membrane encloses the particle that the cell wants, trapping it. The membrane then pinches off to form a vesicle with the particle inside. The vesicle can then move into the cell.
White blood cells use endocytosis to eat and destroy bacteria and viruses.
This amoeba is also doing endocytosis in order to munch its lunch!
Awesome! …. Unless you’re the paramecium….

“Amoeba eats paramecia ( Amoeba's lunch )” video clip by Morris Kemp (used with permission and edited for length and speed). Here’s the link to his original video on RU-vid: • Amoeba eats paramecia...
He also has some others that I’d recommend checking out, including one of an amoeba eating 2 paramecia!
White Blood Cell Endocytosis Video by Andrei Savitsky (edited for length and speed): en.wikipedia.o...
Description of video as described on its Wikipedia page: "Bacterial phagocytosis by neutrophil. Video accelerated 8 times. Bacteria have been added to a drop of human blood. The video demonstrates how a segmented neutrophil finds a pathogen and absorbs it. In this way, neutrophils protect a person when bacteria enter the body through a wound."
