Syd, I had lasik 25 years ago as an early adopter at 35 years old. Still don't need glasses. Zero regrets whatsoever and it's truly been a blessing! Ride on!
Lasix seems like certainly a better option than contacts. But why either? Why not just have prescription glasses? You can get anti-fog and lens that darken in brighter sun. Those are the best.
Syd, get the lasik!!! I got it more than 15 years ago and my eyes are going strong! I did it because i was so tired of having crap get in my eyes and having to take out my contacts on nearly every single ride. ZERO regrets.
-8.50 contacts until I had lasik done. My vision started to worsen after 15 years but I can still do everything without contacts or glasses except for driving at night.
I had Lasik done way back in 1997. I could not see the Big E on the chart, and went to seeing almost 20/20, but not quite. I was almost 40 then and I do use glasses for distant vision now, but at least these glasses have thin lenses and not coke bottle bottoms. Recuperation was fast. I had it done on Friday, and was playing pool for money on Sunday. Can't recommend it enough, I've had almost no issues, other than OCCASIONAL minor dry eyes and I seldom even need eye drops.
Syd, I am short sighted I don't know if there is an equivalent in the US but there is a company called eyedream who creates lenses you can sleep in over night and it corrects your vission, lasts about 36-40 hrs. No need to worry about dry eyes, contacts falling out or going in water during the day! Hope that maybe of some use. Love the videos both and looking forward to watching the content from this bucket list event.
I’ll add to all the other LASIK, comments. Got it done when I was around 35 years old, I’m almost 50 and still don’t need glasses for distance. One of the best things I’ve ever done. Glasses were a pain and I had contacts for quite a few years but my eyes slowly started to reject them and the irritation was bad enough that I couldn’t wear them anymore. As long as your eyes are compatible with the procedure, you’ll never look back.👍🏼
Got laser eye surgery in the beginning of 2020 and it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. Before surgery I could see maybe 4-6 inches clearly, afterward I've been consistent 20/20 vision. Worth a lot to me as I do a lot of "adventuring" solo and losing glasses or contacts was a constant worry because I was almost functionally blind without them. If you want a full review of my experience ask away. My experience was a bit different as I had to get PRK instead of Lasik but in the end the results have been worth it.
Love lasik and would do it again even WITH the issue I’ve had. Slight astigmatism, and when I would wear contacts certain color LED lights (mostly blues) would be blurry. Never happened with glasses. Now that’s permanent 😂. Still, my only regret is not doing it sooner.
I had Lasik when I was 29 (now 40). Didn't need glasses growing up, my eyesight just slowly worsened in my 20's requiring a mild prescription. I opted for Lasik as I was racing BMX at the time and with two young kids, I grew tired of the hassles of glasses (both racing and my kids grabby fingers). Probably 5 years following the procedure my eyesight started to regress somewhat, though I didn't require glasses. However, the past year or so my eyesight has gotten to the point I really need to get them checked as I likely need glasses again. This is likely the result of me just being 10 years older now and the fact that I stare at a monitor all day for work. I don't intend to try to get a second procedure, but if I were to go back in time I wouldn't hesitate to make the same decision to have Lasik. An alternative to consider to contacts would be prescription lenses for your goggles and bike glasses. I'll likely go this route for my mountain biking if I stop procrastinating on getting my eyes checked.
I just got LASIK this year! It is awesome! Absolutely worth it. But....definitely talk to a few different LASIK surgeons and get input from your typical eye doc - just to be sure.
Syd! Lasik is a decision you will not regret! Dec of 2017 for me and I have not had 1 problem! You will gain a million times of confidence if you just do the consult
11:44 Oh that’s funny where an enduro racer is afraid of looking down a mountain. Hahaha… Just kidding, but funny still. Great content and vid as always! Thanks!
I got Lasik 15 years ago to correct an astigmatism. My eyesight is still perfect. Go for it Syd. It'll be the best money you've ever spent. Not having to rely on glasses and contacts, priceless..
lasik it great, for about 10 years, then it starts to slip. Also, really wrecks your night vision from the beginning, so if that matters, don't do it. wreck: all lights star burst and natural darkness vision is impacted
I don't know if I speak for anyone else but, when I know there's a crash coming, I think it's going to happen at any point. I can't enjoy the video when I cringe around every corner expecting an ass over tea kettle. It kinda sucks the enjoyment out of things. -My two cents.
best thing me and my wife ever did was get lasik. (besides the obligatory having our kids and all that. lol) Seriously I would recommend it easily to anyone, especially if you find yourself having to put on contacts in a tent on the beach often!
LASIK surgery all the way. I actually got it because I started racing mountain bikes and had a contact fall out mid race, that was the last straw for me!
Syd - Get the LASIK! I got my eyes done way back in 2004 at Stanford Medical The “surgery” takes literally 5 minutes and is painless. The recovery takes a couple weeks and you can’t rub your eyes (patches at night). I had 20/20 vision until ~2018. With my age (I’m 59 now), I have succumbed to wearing reading/computer glasses but otherwise I live glass/contact free!
Great to watch. I was watching Scotty Laughland's channel too. Great racing. Glad Macky is ok after the prang. Did you replace your helmet after that crash?
Been waiting for this series to start. Caught a few glimpses of you both on Scotty Laughlands Vlog during the week. Looked like a very tough type 2 fun week for all who participated. I hope Macky got that bump on the head checked out properly after he finished? That was a hard fall on some nasty boulders.
Super cool to watch, thinking about doing it in ´24-´25....i would love to see some indepth on your equipment, especialy suspension, tires and brakes, and thourghts on your choices...Regards from Denmark...
Awesome start to Madeira you two!!! Looks brutal though! Syd, I'm 50 now but got Lasik in 2005. Got both eyes done at once and have enjoyed 19/20 vision until recently due to age (haha). I grew up with teriiible nearsightedness. I wore glasses and used contacts since grade school. Easy procedure back then...maybe 20 minutes, my husband even got to watch from outside the room. Sent home to sleep for 24hr(with a med) and then the next day was active again. At the time I was a surfer and had to refrain from getting in the water for a month but that was it. easy easy easy. Best 5k I ever spent. & I would bet the tech today is 1000x better then '05. Great job in Madeira and look forward to seeing the next several days to come.
Kinda funny seeing the non-prickly prickly pears all over Maderia. Did you guys get a kick out of those? Since prickly pear might as well be the state plant of New Mexico😁
Syd- I got LASIK 16 years ago when I was 32 years old. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I went from contacts with a 5.25 or -5.25 prescription which is pretty blind to 20/15 vision with no issues and that is still going strong after all these years. I would highly recommend. I also man bike, run ultras, and play other sports and camp on occasion and not having to worry about contacts has been awesome. Great video as always, can’t wait for the next one!
Awesome video (as always) and fantastic riding from you both looking forward to the series. Highlight = Macky turning positively English saying "Cheers Mate" to fellow rider after a pass LOL
Did not have lasik but the “smile” procedure, the newer version without a flap, about half a year ago. I was very sceptical as well, but it’s really not a big deal at all! Incredibly fast and painless. Highly recommend! My eye surgeon even said, that the risks of this procedure are lower than the risks associated with using contact lenses…
Nothing to worry about with Lysic (sp). I had it about 15 years ago. I am sure a lot has changed but only issue is I need to use readers now which was expected. Still have 20 20 for distance. Very safe.
I've ridden in Madeira, it's amazing, a bit of a hidden gem. A guide can show you the best routes and food... Also a lovely place to visit for a holiday.
Olá, bom dia! Glad Macky is okay. Full face is the go-to in Madeira, especially if you're blind run racing. Syd killed it! Glad you two got a chance to experience Madeira
OMG You two are crazy brave wholly cow! The views were incredible and the chicken guy was too funny lol. I know I would have fell apart when your bikes got lost but your experience in adventure riding got them back. Great stuff can't wait for the next one. :) :)
Of all the enduro videos of you two I have watched this one made by butt pucker. That terrain was scary AF! You two are phenomenal and have my utmost respect and admiration.
Lasik is very routine now, Syd. Just find a good doc who does many. The machine does most of it now. Had it done in 2000. Just recently had one eye touched up due to age
