There is a great time slip historical fiction novel about Matilda de Braose by Barbara Erskine. Not sure if it is still in print, but the Lady of Hay is a great read.

What a great historical fiction book! It made me investigate the historical content. How sad and horrific her and her son's death. They did not die in vain. It changed our judicial system.

John's pursuit of them seems spiteful and extremely personal especially when demanding that Matilda also be turned over as a hostage. She appears to have been a remarkable woman. I read Lady of Hay many many years ago, and it has always haunted me a bit. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I am always amazed that families who once proclaimed themselves Royal were always only concerned with increasing their wealth at the expense of everyone else. As for the bribery and oppression, it doesn't seem that far removed from today: "if you give me a lot of money, I will make sure you pay less tax 🤐" 💔 for those that suffered

Increasing wealth at the expense of everyone else sounds like American corporations today. They also pay off the right politicians so laws are more favorable to corporations than workers

I’m really loving this series on pre Magna Carta England. I tend to focus so much on the war of the roses and Tudor and Elizabethan history - but often miss earlier history because it feels “dry.” You have such a wonderful way of evoking the past even when we sometimes lack diaries or other primary sources to the same extent in later eras.

The "favor of the King" has always seemed a mercurial thing to me. I do understand the rewards could be great. However, it was a precarious dance. Any perceived treachery or disloyalty could send that house of cards tumbling down. The gamble was too great to my mind. I would have most likely been a peasant, so I'd never get the opportunity to gain favor with a monarch. 😂😉 🏰 👑🗡🛡

Another interesting video! But my brain is stock on an unrelated question... "Marchand" (or sometimes "Marchant") is a pretty common family name in French Canada. I was wondering if anglophones with that name have french ancestry or if "merchant" was first brought by the french as "marchand" then change over time to it's modern spelling. I don't know if I am clear... but if someone knows, I am curious !

My view of history (His Story) is that so much of what gets passed to succeeding generations is based on who was the victor at the time. Living in such combative times when power & control were gruesomely on display during wars and during court, it would have been very easy and believable to conflate a king’s errors, character flaws. Which is not to let John off the hook because because I believe he likely did enough to sully his own name. 1300 years later, what definitive evidence do we have?

I have heard of the death of Lady de Braose caused by the neglect and spite of King John. One of the ways I am sure that John was as dastardly as he was portrayed is that there was never another King John just as no one names their son Adolf to this day. We don’t want to repeat evil.🏰

That gruesome detail about the death of Margaret de Braose and her son with the attempted cannibalism reminds me of the gruesome Count Ugolino story in Dante's "Inferno". As Dante lived about a century later the story might even have influenced him.
@kaloarepo288
@kaloarepo288 Месяц назад
Dante is likely to have been acquainted with some of the details of king John's infamous reign as he also mentions in the "Inferno" the punishment on 2 of Henry de Montfort's sons for having murdered in a church in Viterbo, Italy of John's grandson Henry d'Almayn -his father .John's son. was titular Holy Roman Emperor -hence the title Henry of Germany (Almayn)

Didn't the fact that King John was excommunicated impact the implementation of Magna Carta? England became a ward of the church, which rejected the charter. Is it true that when a king is excommunicated, no church sanctioned activities, like weddings and last rites, can occur throughout the kingdom?

I'm not sure that William knew thatvJohn had killed Geoffrey's son, and that John knew he knew. John subsequently started picking on William (and family). That's not how you treat someone who has blackmail-quality dirt on you. You treat them quite well, lest they blow the whistle. William didn't start spilling the beans on John until much later, after John had been taking things away, and William eventually scarpered to France. The behaviour of the two is not consistent with John's guilt in the murder of his rival .
