they just acquired ziva dynamics who's face trainer rig is basically like metahuman but can generate those wrinkle maps for animations. no doubt they are the reason the facial animation looks so good. but the real thing on display here is their new dynamic lighting system... finally we have something that can compete with lumen. and as someone who recently had to deliver to unity for a client recently i can say their previous versions at least have been incredibly lacking compared to unreal engine when it comes to quality global illumination options, this is a very very welcome improvement.

IMHO we should be well past the point of green screen by now with the tech we have. Sorry to burst your expectations but Unity probably isn't capable of more than the videos of the games I made on my channel. All these videos they produce will never be what goes in the hands of us developers. They introduce new systems and as soon as users complain they find that they did not do proper testing and cannot solve the issues users complain about so they post a "will not fix" and then leave the tech in the dust and then they introduce a new system which repeats the cycle and only makes users more upset. Who knows maybe this time is different but fool us once, twice, three times....
@PMAndrews
@PMAndrews 2 года назад
@@CollapseDev I mean no offence but Unity is capable of way more than the videos shown on your channel. There's no new system on display here, this demo is just demonstrating what the currently existing hdrp pipeline can do combined with other techniques such as photogrammetry and motion capture, all of which are tools which are readily available to developers in one form or another.
@CollapseDev
@CollapseDev 2 года назад
@@PMAndrews You didn't even read the description did you - it's demonstrating several new features. I'm warning people not to fall for it. Very few in the Unity community use HDRP for serious games because it's no where near production ready mainly in performance areas. The Unity demo team so far only make cutscenes with them because that's all that's practical even for the best GPU. All my latest videos use URP btw at hundreds of fps to spare. I've never been more content.

Ohhh the clothing looks incredible! The lighting on the skin is fantastic! The eyes feel natural--I didn't notice them. I think the main gap that stood out to me was the facial animation, it felt a bit jelly-ish and motivated by forces on the surface rather than muscles underneath.
@Hozq3D
@Hozq3D 2 года назад
Yeah its one of the downsides of traditional 3D real time rigging where that's literally how it works, by moving points on the mesh around. I don't think there's any real time solutions for actual muscle based movement where the skin slides across and gets pulled by muscles that are underneath.

@@Paco3dArt I can't. I'm not a billion-dollar tech company with 5000 employees trying to push the boundaries of real-time rendering. But it's important still to remind ourselves of what's not working just yet. Of course there are the movements of the eyes, and the lips moreso in this case. But even at 0:25 I could feel that something isn't quite right. Maybe it's the fact that everything looks too clean? The lack of imperfections, dust particles and haze? Maybe the camera not adjusting to the light difference or lack of blur and aperture bokeh? I can't put my finger on it, and that's quite impressive in itself. Looks pretty great. I wasn’t aware unity could be used for realistic graphics, I thought it was more for mobile applications. Definitely impressed. One small bit of constructive criticism, I’m still not feeling the physics. I feel this way about current engines as well. Sometimes movements feel realistic, but most of the time it just feels a tad slow and a tad too smooth. Like if there was a settings dial for “underwater movement” for character movements, that dial would be set between 5-7. I don’t know how to describe it, and maybe that’s part of the problem. There is something about actual physical human movements that feel sharper, quicker. I don’t know if in real life there are micro shakes or micro movements, little twitches, something. Real life movements still feel quicker, sharper and heavier. Movement in video games feels like the characters are underwater. Movements are slower, they seem to “float“ they seem much smoother. As I understand it, technology isn’t (or at least wasn’t) fast enough to process that level of detail and movement?

this has nothing to do with tech and the engine being used, how a character moves is most of the times completely done by animators, and well, their skill and time will determine how good the movements will look though i agree with you on the physics being often on the side of priority for game engines when they really shouldn't, we have already reached a graphical fidelity level that is beyond satisfactory and yet the level of interactability your character can have on their world is often limited and very much behind the level that our graphics have reached... and that's going to continue being the case for as long as we try to reach for something that "looks real" instead of "feels real"

The thing about metahuman, is that it's modular and available to any user. Super highly customizable. But this is custom. And from any amazing character artist, custom can look amazing. Not that it's not good. But comparing it to metahumans doesn't cut it. If they come out with modular characters of this caliber for unity, then i'll agree. Till then.

@jack1313
@jack1313 2 года назад
@@TedThomasTT Well, the problem with MetaHumans is that it uses a database of scans to create it's characters. Which seems similar to a Disney paper "Interactive Sculpting of Digital Faces Using an Anatomical Modeling Paradigm". So every move you make, it base's it off a database of human 3d scans. So with more scans in the database it's a cool way to make background characters/peds because they have to be more plausible, but not the greatest for flexibility and customizability because of its's limits.

The real test would be to take the same character model and compare the results in Unreal and Unity since it's a custom model and is probably using a much higher texture resolution than MetaHuman, also note that this model only has the hands and face and the rest of the body is hidden by clothing.

❤The Power of the Inner Citadel The Unity Engine demo, the teaser for the film "Enemies" that will never be made, intrigued me so much that I momentarily forgot the threatening reality of missile attacks. This short video probably contains less narrative depth than I imagined, but certainly more than many modern Hollywood blockbusters. The creators of the demo visually touched upon several facets of a familiar, yet fictional and real, story. It depicts the "halls of the mind" where the heroine, engaged in a long and dangerous game with herself and the surrounding reality, dwells. With a seemingly indifferent demeanor, she makes a decisive move, addressing her subconscious, which perceives the entire informational field of the universe: “I have in my mind everything that anyone has ever known.” The creative surroundings of the halls change. They were constructed over years of the heroine’s work on her earthly ego, so fleeting for this universe and so meaningless from the height of the orbital citadel into which the creative interior transforms. “You have in your heart everything that anyone has ever felt,” - thus the invincible consciousness synchronizes with the genetic memory of the body. The flesh is prone to instinctive reactions, but these reactions can be anticipated and controlled. She strengthens her spell as the mistress of the halls with Dostoevsky's words, giving them her own meaning: “Power… is given only to those who dare to lower themselves and pick it up.” She already knows how to handle the external system. The move, the result of a path of painful failures, has been made. The goal, understandable only to the heroine herself, is about to be achieved, and no one will be privy to this plan. Even if the inner citadel is impregnable, why provoke potential enemies? I must confess, I deliberately avoided Dostoevsky back in school. But I fully absorbed Gonchar’s "The Cathedral."

Unity can make the most impressive tech demos in the world, it'll always feel like the only actual games that use it are inde lowpoly ones and those for adults...
@CollapseDev
@CollapseDev 2 года назад
The sad reality that Unity has had a track record of is that what we see them use and what is finally released to consumers really is indeed a shadow of what was promised. It started with Enlighten which failed, then the progressive GPU lightmapper which also failed mainly due to memory issues and light leakage, then came HDRP which also failed because it used even more resources then the Unreal Engine did even in an empty scene! Then comes this new system which will probably follow the same trend. The reason you see indie lowpoly and adult games is because that's what Unity is efficiently capable of and mobile games. Every other aspect brings extreme headaches. You can see the game I am developing on my channel and it uses the URP not HDRP so my game will not be capable of crazy graphics but it does achieve a good middle ground with graphics and performance.
@vigosaurus4665
@vigosaurus4665 2 года назад
@@CollapseDev That's not completely true. The real reason why low poly games are made more in unity is because the amount of indie devs that are using and inspired by low poly games plus how easy it is to create a low poly game compared to making realistic graphic games. Since a lot of people who use unity are making low poly games these days, therefore the low poly stuff or even stylized graphics gains more attention which encourages more developers to push over that category. Back in the old days, people aims to make FPS/TPS games (not low poly graphics) with unity and brackeys tutorials were really the golden spot for everyone, and after a couple of years that fps/tps without low poly graphics trends shifts into low poly and more towards survival/rpg type of low poly game afaik.

You can never do it. Gameplay graphics are always going to be behind cinamatic graphics... and that has been true since the 1980s. Being able to exactly control the camera angle allows you to ramp up the graphics. Unity goes back and forth on it though.. Book of the dead was cinamatic, Adam was gameplay, and now this is cinematic again... but as unity and computers get stronger, you now could basically make a game with Book of the dead graphics. You also need to remember that Unity is more than just for games.
