This virtual book talk by Stephen Gross, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies at New York University, took place on Thursday, November 9, 2023. Prof. Gross talked about his new book - Energy and Power: Germany in the Age of Oil, Atoms, and Climate Change - a comprehensive history of German energy and climate policy after World War I. He described the book's origins, beginning with his dissertation research around German energy policy in 2008-2009 and realizing how politicized it was, something Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the recent climate drought have made even more clear. He described writing the book and trying to tell a coherent story by way of explaining political inaction around climate change, despite growing scientific knowledge, as an attempt to hit a moving target as Germany's energy policy continues to shift. The talk is a fascinating account of “how energy became such a charged affair entangled with so many other aspects of policy making including integration.”
This event took place as part the Center for the Study of Europe’s ”Europe in the World” lecture series, an initiative of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Security and Defense, Kaija Schilde. The aim of the series, supported by the European Union**, is to prompt critical reflection by a larger public on human and regional security informed by cross-national experiences and a variety of disciplinary lenses as well as to introduce or emphasize EU perspectives into ongoing debates around security integration and global challenges.
