Four pilots from the Auckland Gliding Club had the opportunity to do some advanced cross country training with Sebastian Kawa. Mine was on the fourth day before Sebastian headed the the the Club class Nationals to be held in Taupo. We flew across the Hauraki planes and then just for practice flew back across and then back again before heading down the ridge to the Tauranga Road and out towards Arapuni. On the way home we left Mercer at at 2600' and cruised over Bombay village at 1300' easily getting back to Drury at about 900'
This Video shows the launch and then flying the energy line from Waitakaruru to Thames three times. The audio isn't the best from the back seat but goo enough to get the idea of what was going on.
Thanks again to Sebastian for a great day flying.
If you want to have a go at Gliding contact the Auckland Gliding Cub at glidingauckland... or google your local club.

Great videos!! They would be fantastic if you added some clear narrative from the cockpit. What are you thinking, what are you planning, what if that does not work, etc, etc. Keep up the good work.

I'm not quite at the Bruno Vassel level of video expertise but in future I'll try and add some commentary.

Maybe it's the angle of the camera but it appears the forward pilot employs a great deal of cross control when circling in the thermals.

Great to hear Sebastian's thoughts. You can see how he is always thinking about maximizing speed! I have to be honest though, the video was extremely hard to watch because of how uncoordinated you fly. Were your feet even on the pedals? He criticizes you for it at 3:50 in the video but nothing improves after that. You are going to spin and die someday turning base to final, or flying near mountains, if you don't improve. Keep the yaw string straight!

You are correct, that was only the third time I had flown the Duo, I normally fly a DG300, the foot pressure required is a lot more than I was used to. However I thought it more useful to show the video from the title point of view than not to show it due to how unco I was. Managed my 300km out and return on the weekend so the flight with Sebastian was well worth it.

@@antonlawrence638 thanks for the video, it was a useful insight into how the master thinks. Don't take rickdc3's comment on your rudder use to heart. Under ruddering a turn is much safer than over ruddering a turn (which is the classic spin entry technique). Spinning in on the final turn is usually caused by flying too slowly and then over ruddering to try to get the nose round to complete the turn. I thought your flying was fine, I would be happy to fly with you any time.

@@antonlawrence638 Sebastian teach you his way to do, he is one of the best glider pilot. And as a "biginner" trying to do like him gonna lead you to fail. He can take risk by flying low and fast and be able to finish the task but you, you won't (99.99% of the people too). He know everything and have a big knowlodge of flying. Try to find you way of working, not copy world champion. Won't work

What is your Partner Sebastian thinking to pull up the gear in the winch Launch ? Thats absolutly a and idea, because the Launch is such a critical Part of the flight. Why does he do that though? We learn to Never EVER do that Greetings from Germany
@soaruk3697
@soaruk3697 5 лет назад
Because he's a 13 times world champion and knows what he is doing, whereas you?
@Edensohn94
@Edensohn94 5 лет назад
So you think you should do this in a winch Launch and laugh just because he is a world Champion ?
@tinchote
@tinchote 5 лет назад
It is never a good idea to retract the gear before pattern altitude (which is the altitude at which you would extend it for landing!). I cannot imagine a single circumstance in which it is a good idea.

@@Edensohn94 As I said he is a 13 times world champion -the most successful competition pilot in the history of the sport with thousands of hours in the cockpit and knows what he is doing, whereas yourself? The fact that you do not even seem to even know who Sebastian Kawa is, belies to me your lack of experience and knowledge of this sport. Maybe you should ask him I am sure he would be willing to tell you his reasoning - www.sebastiankawa.pl/

@@soaruk3697 Why would you assume that because someone is a champion, is a safe pilot? I'm not saying Kawa is an unsafe pilot, because I know very little about his flying from a safety point of view (although, if you think the "camels on final" manoeuvre is "safe", I would like to know your definition of "safe"). I have heard many horror stories about safety in world championships. And, to name a few: Holighaus and Blatter crashed into mountains, Reichman crashed with another glider
