1) gan-fan - 干饭 [direct translation: do rice]
basically a meme that symbolizes “to go eat” or “to feast,” but can also be used in a context of perseverance. it originated from a video creator who filmed himself eating rice in his yard. every time, before he eats, he would say “gan fan le, gan fan le” and the chicken in his yard would come running to get a piece of meat or vegetable in his bowl. in an attempt to punish the chicken for stealing food, he swung his foot around, but ended up crashing to the ground. the phrase “干饭” went viral and people started referencing the meme everywhere.
2) hao-zi-wei-zhi - 耗子尾汁 [direct translation: rat tail sauce] *messing with the tones of an idiom: 好自为之 [do as you will]
马包国 [ma bao guo], a public figure in Taiji [a martial art], posted a video in January of 2020, in which he didn’t look so good, with a bruised eye, and said the two young people who messed with him didn’t have morals. at the end, he told them to “do as you will,” and because of his accent, it sounded like “rat tail sauce.” it quickly became a meme and common reaction image.
3) the study of fan-er-sai - 凡尔赛文学
chenle got so many comments with this meme in one of his lives, and I ended up translating an entire Baidu entry because he read the whole thing. it’s still activating my fight or flight response whenever I hear it. it’s basically just the act of bragging while pretending to be modest.
4) zhen-bu-chuo - 针不戳 [direct translation: needle doesn’t poke] *play on 真不错 [not bad] with roughly the same phonetics
the original statement where this meme originated is “zhen-bu-chuo living in the mountains is zhen-bu-chuo.” the streamer who said it wasn’t very clear in their Mandarin pronunciation. this pun/meme became viral soon after the stream.
