I wanna say something that I believe actually aided in him being this confused: The song, or more specifically the melody of the song, (as sung by Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, as played in the instrumental during the show) originally starts in Si/Ti/B (I know cause I've played the song with my violin). The note they gave him as first note was actually Fa/F SHARP. They gave him the song in a DIFFERENT tonality from which it is usually played (aka the one he had usually listened to) so not only had he to play the melody on a calculator, which isn't designed originally to be an instrument, but additionally TRANSPORT the melody. And of course if he was used to it starting in the B sound (even if he knew it consciously or not), having the F# as his starting point may have confused him a lot more than what he might actually have been otherwise

And the song is like modal or something, while that calculator really only has all the notes that would be on the white keys on a piano... Like, I'm pretty sure that it's doable up until the chorus like they said, but you'd have to be careful where you started or you wouldn't have access to the right notes. RIP. Baobao you did well!!
