Actually my experience is not completely related to racism, it's more about them being anti-mask and hatred towards people wearing masks. In general, locals here are very friendly and approachable. They don't really care about what kind of people you are.

Because masks is quite useless nowadays, especially against omicron. And wearing the whole hazmat suit to board plane is simply absurd, it’s overreacting, hysterical and paranoid

Hello, I'm a HKer having grown up in Canada. I believe the level of racism really depends on the specific neighborhoods. I personally feel it's virtually impossible not to have any experience of discrimination. Keep in mind a lot of whites do feel superior. It's in their blood! Also, racism doesn't have to come in the form of verbal attacks. I have seen a lot of angry/weird looks myself mostly from some elderly... Anyhow, just carry on with life and don't let it bother you! BUT NEVER BACK DOWN WHEN BEING BULLIED!!

Never feel you're inferior to them. On the contrary, you're superior to them. If you belong to an ethnic group, chances are you're bilingual. If you're an immigrant like me, you would have been exposed to life and culture outside of your adopted country. The local whites mostly have not seen the outside world and are uni-lingual. Most hard working immigrants own their own home while a lot of the local whites are renting because they are not as financially astute as most immigrants and are unable to save up for the down payment.

Being born and raised in UK during the 80s and 90s I personally experienced extreme racism throughout my childhood and teenage years. I was often physically attacked on a daily basis and hospitalized due to the colour of my skin in school , even certain teachers would too therefore my childhood was dark. I understand that back then when there were no internet the world was more closed off therefore foreigners like me and my family would be very protective of our own people, in the 60s my uncle would face serious racial problems as he would get pelted with rocks on the streets for no reason. But as time goes by and the world opens up with online media access and social media people are more wary of how to treat one and other. In 2019 I went back to UK to visit my family after leaving and living in Hong Kong since 2005 I realized a lot has changed and people were much more welcoming and friendly towards me, it made me really happy and something popped into my mind saying "I'M FINALLY HOME"

Somehow I felt a different kind of racism which happens quite often: people keep saying "Ni hao" and "Xie xie" to me even though they have no idea which country I come from and what language I speak except my appearance as an East Asian. I used to feel offended and sad but started to greet them in Spanish afterwards. Sometimes people don't mean to hurt you. You just need a bit of humour.

As a Chinese American, I have encountered more discrimination in Europe than I ever have in the US. I was visiting London for the first time 10 years ago. The first night of my visit, I was assaulted while withdrawing money from an ATM in Piccadilly Circus. 3-4 young Brit men attacked me from behind, pummeling me in unison. I assumed it was a robbery, but realized it was a race based attack when they start yelling out “ Konichi wa” surmising my identity as Japanese. I yelled out “Get the f*ck off of me, I’m not Japanese.” Shocked by my response in American English, they backed off sheepishly. And said “ Sorry, mate. Are you alright”! ?! Racism can happen anywhere. Mostly subtle but unfortunately blatant and violent in some cases.

The thing is everywhere has racism. Hong Kong has racism from Hong Kong Chinese to Hong Kong Indians. While we should keep the conversation going, too much highlighting may have the opposite effect. It is similar to school bullying. They don't need a reason, they just do it because they wanted to do it. I just hope people don't take it too personal as trashes will always be trashes, we can do little about it, but we should treasure those who appreciate us as who we are.

Institutional discrimination, racism and aggression is common in UK and its getting worse. The covid pandemic just made it more visible and gave these individuals the platform to air their racist views. To say that people are "so friendly to Hong Kongers and therefore there's no racism in the UK" shows these people have not yet, but hopefully they will in the end, tried to have an in-depth understanding of their new home!
