This engaging ESL icebreaker is one of my favorites to do on the first day of a new language class. If you're teaching a language, this is great for B1 and above.
Everyone loves a murder mystery. What better way to start your class than to have your students become detectives and solve a crime. Check out the video to learn all of the methodology and steps needed to pull the icebreaker off, along with some methodological/psychological insights on why the activity works so well.
Use this on the first day of any kind of classroom! I've had great results!
This icebreaker requires some music, wallets filled with interesting business cards, a detective outfit, and a dead body (not a real one :) )
Thanks for watching

Students could take turns, one per class, to replicate this activity about themselves; the preparation and moderation would transform it into an incredible learning experience for proficient level students.

I work in a small, rural community where there was a murder this year! I really want to tweak this game into something that won’t be so “real”. A robbery, or other crime…?

Maybe be careful with gun shots and screams… asylum seekers have possibly experienced some violent situations….

Yep, always be wary of your class and plan accordingly.
