How to work with difficult clients! In this video I will add a Storytime and some advice on how to deal with difficult clients in therapy.
This is something that scares many out of the field of social work...today I am sharing my top tips for engaging tough clients. I will also share the story of a time I was triggered in session!!!
Working in juvenile probation and amongst resistant families has certainly taught me a lot-- I hope you gain some great insight from this video!
1. Start Where the Client is
2. Do Not Take things Personally
3. Do not go too fast-- in challenging cleints
4. Empathize & Build Rapport
5. State and ReState Goals in Therapy
6. Use Analogies to your advantage

Seriously, this was such a great video and a great example of how to respond to a difficult client. As a new social worker, I’m relieved to hear that your experiences haven’t been as bad as you feared. I’ve had similar fears, but fortunately, haven’t encountered them. It can be so hard to remind yourself not to take things personally, but your example illustrates why it’s so important and why we need to remind ourselves to practice empathy.

Thank you for the info! Yes, it's great to know how to "leave work at work and not bring it home" and "to know how to stay calm and not emotionally reacting to any negative emotions one encounters in social work.

While I was getting my BSW, my professors stressed the importance of being safe. Keeping a clear path to the exit in case you felt you were in danger.

I think an important thing is making sure though that your client is closest to the exit. If fight or flight kicks in you want them to be able to leave rather than you being between them and where they can leave.

This word about not judging her is hogwash. Of course the goal was in mind but folks that talk about not judging, or wagging the finger at least internally is such a joke. Your judgement comes with making assertions and yours was that there was negligence bc she missed Appt.
