I am not ready to say goodbye to these characters 😢 I am so invested in their development, happy just spending time with them. The narrator is excellent, so calming to listen to. Her ability to distinguish characters voices is impressive. Thanks again!
I know I should choose a main character as my favourite but honestly Sarah the maid was my favourite character in this book. She is advisor, carer, protector and mediator for Millie. I loved the fox imagery especially since Millie becomes Lady Fox and foxes are smarter than cats which is the imagery around Lady Olivia. I am eager to see the redemption of Lord Neil. He shows honour in this story. Particularly when he says he did not want to let Millie down so he involves his father. My favourite scene is Isaac and Millie calling each others bluff at the ruins over their kissing prowess. Thank you for dealing empathetically with PTSD and its impact on Isaac. It really is not a simple healing over time.
I am just beginning this novel but already feeling sad that it is the last in the Inglewood series for me as I accidentally began with “Lord Neal”. I loved them all. Thank you again for sharing these with us, I pray the number of views climb to adequately compensate your efforts. 🙏🏻💛🎉
You're so kind! I'm glad you've enjoyed the series. I've enjoyed your comments! I'm writing a Return to Inglewood series - not sure if you knew - but hoping to have the first one up on audio soon! It's already an ebook and paperback on Amazon.
Hurray! I didn't realize that there would be more to the series! I am also not ready to leave these people- I am usually not so invested with characters as I am these in the Silver Birch Society!
With all the injustices going on our world today, your stories bring such a reprieve. I'm in my 70s and thoroughly enjoy the escape they bring. From the beginning of time people have suffered while throughout this same time people who have the ability to overcome pain and suffering have prevailed for many. Thank you for the gentle reminders that love allows many to maintain a modicum of happiness. Riches do not bring happiness. If we have love amongst our family, friends and mankind in general then all is not lost. ❤
I've been binging this series all week, but today! The castle/church scene was TORMENT! My kids got worried for a second because I was gasping and groaning in disgust, yelling, "OH NO! ISAAC! WE NEED YOU!" I listen on headphones. Hahahahaaa. Oh gosh. Anyway, it was a good one. Thanks for sharing ❤️
Oh my goodness, your poor kids! Hahahahaha! I've done similar things while reading/listening to books. Once while on a road trip I gasped so dramatically my husband put on the breaks, thinking we were about to hit something. Lesson learned for both of us! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I have been enjoying all of the books I’ve listened to so far--I hope you get a call from Hallmark or one of those channels that would make your work into movies--all if the scenes and characters are so vivid, and the dialogue is so real. It is really like having a really good movie/TV series in your head--like Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility type show. Nice work 😊❤️ PS Can't forget NETFLIX or even BBC
So far, this book is my favorite from the series. I actually cried at the part where he broke down at Jacobs. Your insight of people and the depth of your characters is so beautiful. I loved how funny they are as well. I have great hopes for lord Neil in the next book. My son died and your books have given me a wonderful escape with happy endings.
My characters mean a lot to me. I do my best to give them depth of feeling and purpose. Thank you for the compliment. I'm so sorry you lost your son. From one mother to another, I hope you have many lovely memories to bring you peace. ❤️
This is the second time I’ve listened to this delightful novel. Recovering from eye surgery I’ve had the opportunity to revisit this. I’m always impressed by the depth of your characterisation Sally… The narrator made full use of this rich story and performed it so well. Thank you xx
This series is the best I have ever seen so far and I will definitely buy the paper version. You are so talented and surpass yourself with every story you write 👏👏👏 Thank you so much!
My Professor back in college told me to write about what I know and I did..you did a great job and the work behind your books..the research.!!! You are really good..thank you for all your hard work and beautiful writing..
Wow, thank you! That's such a kind compliment. Yes, there is SO MUCH RESEARCH. But that's actually something I love. My original plan was to be a research librarian at a university. So I love it.
SPIEL ALERT In the middle of my fourth book of the Inglewood series, I’m forced to comment on the artistry of the author. Somehow, Sally Britton has managed to impress me in every, single book of the series with her character development more than even my long-favoured writers after less than a week captivated by her books. I confess that with each book, I have waited with bated breath for the glaring errors I often find as a deeply persnickety reader who loves regency series. Yet, I have nothing but high praise for these works of sheer genius. The way that Sally designs each plot gives us the opportunity to become genuinely invested in the characters, something I find lacking in many regency novels. Even more amazing for me, is her ability to CREDIBLY bond her characters to each other while revealing genuine human behaviours and flaws. Real, gritty, multidimensional, authentic people! (continued below)
(continued from above) Additionally, the effortless way in which the personalities of the characters we have met before and their relationships with each other are woven into each tale has me TOTALLY hooked. I am one of those readers who doesn’t read blurbs or look at titles ahead of reading when they may reveal what comes next in a series; I like being surprised. I can tell though, that Lord Neil comes next in this series because, like she has done with all three books before this one, Sally incorporates elements of a particular character making us want to know more about him or her, a seemingly facile way to draw us into another book that could only be rooted in real writing talent and empathy. So many writers forget idiosyncratic behaviours they introduce in a previous novel when they bring back a character, leaving many a series feeling disjointed and not like we are reading of real people. Sally Britton does not disappoint AT ALL in this regard. (continued below)
(continued from above) I am three-quarters of the way through and have that “I wish the book would never end” feeling I get with only the best of works, which always leads me to pause as I have now, to almost extend my time with the characters. Ms Britton, I am fully aware that you are an empath because your understanding of human nature and your compassionate approach come through in every aspect. Thank you for inspiring me to continue to write characters that are well thought out. Thank you for sharing your work here. As a fledgling writer seeking to hone my own craft and find the courage to take the leap into publishing, I could not have stumbled upon a more compelling reminder that writers matter. For anyone trying to decide if the series is worth a listen, you’re wasting your time dithering! Start from the very beginning and become enthralled and delighted as I have. #onelove 🇯🇲❤
THIS was so beautiful to read, so kind, so well thought out, and it just MADE MY DAY. My week. My month. Thank you for seeing all the things I tried to accomplish with this series. It's so good to know that it's evident, it's there, for the people who look. And hopefully FELT by the people who aren't paying close attention. As for glaring errors - I'm certain they are there. Every writer has them. I have British readers who point things out to me on occasion. It's just so important that we learn to be gentle with ourselves when we make mistakes. That we note them, then move on. And wow. Seriously. Thank you so much for your comments.
@@AuthorSallyBritton I'm so glad you were not annoyed by my inordinately long blabbing! 😁I just couldn't resist. Thank you again. Someone else said here - and I agree - "I'm not ready to let these characters go!" Thank you again for sharing these lovely stories.
This has been a hard book because of the evil characters, who lived only to destroy others. But Isaac and Millie with their friends are good and kind. Thank you for the happy interludes. The baby Isaac and his Uncle Isaac made me laugh. The hammock was hilarious! Your happy endings are always satisfying. Isaac is my son's name and a very good one. This book was worth the difficult parts. Thank you for this book and thank your narrator for great voices.
I just finished listening to this wonderfully powerful story for the second time. (Yes it is 2:51 am) it is even better the second time! Your narrator is amazing! Thank you both for the laughs and the tears.
Simply beautiful ❤ another intriguing passionate story so glad to see its not finished yet😊 thank you Sally and Narrator you fill my book cup with beautiful clean stories.
I just finished listening to this and I'm so in love with this couple. They're so sweet together, and the whole story is so well written. Thank you Sally! I think the villain worse than Olivia however, is Millie's mum. I can't tolerate a woman so selfish and willing to see her own child break to satisfy silly and shallow notions of grandeur. Great story as always. I miss them already!
I think it's a very real problem, but I also wonder if women such as that are trying to control their own happiness to an extent they weren't able to when they were younger.
I know I say this about all your books but I just loved love this one. I love the mental health issues that you address and the struggles that these people go through. And in all the books, the struggles women of that age went through and the rules they had to abide by ☹️. How hard it was to be a woman! I was going to comment that these series really should be on TV and then I saw the comment before mine saying the same thing. I completely agree!
Maybe if we all write to Netflix? :-) I love the way my books come alive with narration. I'm grateful you enjoy them, too. The PTSD soldiers have faced, throughout history, without help or compassion, is horrible. Giving it a nod in a Regency romance might seem odd, but it felt right.
An excellent and brilliant author! The story is so intriguing; and the historical era, time, and characters; are very fascinating. I am so loving the vocabulary, British accents; and the enunciated use of words!❤️👍
Thank you so much again! I really enjoyed the Story and (Spoiler!!) that she confided in him. In a lot of stories, the heroines keep everything to themselves until the end and I often think : if they only talked!! Thank you for building these wonderful characters! And now I am really curious about how you can make Lord Neil the main character and likable!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I love to take common plot devices - like not communicating - and turn them on their head. And Neil is such a lovely, charming man to write. ;-) My best friend swore she wouldn't like him after his part as the villain in the first book. Now he's one of her favorites. ;-)
Another great story! So good Sally. I listened and completed a crochet shawl. One whom might of been worn by one of your stories ladies. Lol…. So much enjoyment in this story! Well on to Lord Onry Neil. Book 5 next! ❤️📖📖❤️ Thank you again for your storytelling adventures!
Oh wow! That's really awesome. I love shawls, and own several. I always feel like a lady from the past when I drape them over my shoulders. But with far less elegance than those ladies probably wore them. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I laughed! I cried! I love it!! By far my favorite you've written ❤ but I say that after every audiobook of yours I listen to.... but really this is my favorite ❤❤😊
Thank you for another great story!!! Looking forward to the next one!!! I think Neil has learned many lessons. He's ready to find the love of his life. 😊
Thanks so much for sharing. I really enjoyed this. I wasn't sure I would like Millie too much at first, so I was glad that it was more that she felt she had to do it rather than actually wanting to, if that makes sense. As someone else commented (SPOILER!) I also liked that she eventually confided in him. I listened to Myle's story first, so this was fun to hear the story behind Sir Isaac. Looking forward to Lord Neil. 🙂
Loved reading this on order with the rest of the series. I had a greater understanding of Lord Neil. At first I thoroughly hated him, then I began to see better in him as he helped Millie out. So glad for the two main characters! Woohoo!
I loved this story very much Sally! It was heartwarming to follow the characters and how they helped one another to overcome their challenges. Thank you for sharing it. God bless you 🙏
This was my favorite in the series! Something about Sir Isaac intrigued me from the first. I was bidding my time to get to his story 😊. SLIGHT SPOLERS AHEAD. Having a hero that didn't react in anger or push the heroine away when a lie/secret is revealed was so refreshing! He cared for her enough to think selflessly and want to help and protect her from Lady Olivia's schemes. I've read many romances and that does not happen....You have a way of creating drama and tension that isn't the normal miscommunication or other common tropes. I love it!
@@AuthorSallyBritton Makes sense why I love your stories so much! I've seen how miscommunication and refusal to listen has ruined real relationships around me. I like my entertainment relatively free of it ❤️
I loved this book. I have fallen in love with all your books . It was heart breaking when Millie tells Issic that she accomplished her task. And Issac went to Jacob. I cried tears for them Thank you so much
Just Brilliant ! Thankyou so much Sally & Marianne s amazing charactures! I see them all listening to you ! Havent cried for a while but was wiping my eyes at Emmaline & Millies reunion- truley touching❤️❤️ You both put some sensability in my life lm grateful 👏👏👏🌹❤️🌹❤️
Sorry for being a pedant but Bourbon would not be the drink of choice in an Englishman's home as Bourbon is an American invention and would not be seen in the houses of upperclass Peers of the realm at that time. A more likely drink would have been brandy or claret. I am enjoying these books and your narrator is very good.
This is such a hard to book to listen to. I was in tears a few times. I've read a lot of Regency where a scandal is referred to and that a family or only the woman that the scandal originated with was ruined in society. It's alluded to in Pride and Prejudice and is the most heroic effort of Darcy's that convinces Elizabeth's heart that he is a good man when she hears he has saved her sister. I read P&P variations and occasionally I'll read one where Lydia's elopement never resulted in marriage and the reaction of the town against the Bennets. More than one Regency depicts the double standard of continuing to accept and fawn over the male counterpart of a scandal because 'he's good ton,' after he has ruined one or more families. And even worse, that since the man is of nobility he can get away with things we would cheerfully send P&P's Wickham to New South Wales for. This story explored how devastating the scorn of society was against another ton family because of a broken engagement. The vindictiveness of the 'mean girls' Millie got herself mixed up with was shocking. That badness of course made the triumph at the end even better. I loved Isaac's slow melting. You knew what was going to happen, of course but not how it was going to happen and it was just so lovely to watch the two of them come together. I didn't know how you were going to pull it off in the end. I loved that!!
I'm glad I surprised you! Isaac is a delight. And I loved this story. I loved the idea of the heroine seeing herself as the villain and having to choose a new path.
You truly are a gifted writer. The way you bring each character to life, their growth, their issues, their joy, and everything about them is so real and ever so relatable. It doesn't feel like a fairytale, but it feels as if you are telling the story those whom you love and who lived for real. I cannot begin to express how much I enjoy your work. Thank you so much for the wonderful stories. I've been bining your work for a while now. ❤ love from Sri Lanka
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your kind words, and subscribing! I truly appreciate that. I hope I can continue to write and share more stories for you to love.
BTW Don't ask me why my "I just finished" comment went on the "Engaging" book. It is a mystery to me, too. 🤭 Regardless, I wanted to mention that your choice of narrator/performer in Marion Hussy (Pardon me if I didn't get her name right.) was EXCELLENT! Her voices for the characters brought them to life. Thanks to her as well. I would listen to a selection of your books just knowing that she did the work on those books with you.
Just finished listening to Engaging Sir Isaac. Absolutely loved this story. Thank you Sally Britton for such a wonderful and engaging book. I appreciate no bad language or sex scenes. Refreshing and I enjoyed it immensely. I’ll recommend it to all my friends.
Thank you angel for sharing your work here. I am totally enthralled with the silver birch society and all their adventures. thank you for sharing your gift of imagination. 🙏
I dont know..... I find all this double agent spy stuff makes me nervous! I figure its the best way to have a battle back at the home front, Sally Britton? I have read through the comments how this is some people's favorite book. I dont think I can handle the excitement! ( And I didn't read these novels in order, giving Isaac his due.) I am already enjoying the unfolding of Lord Neil's character.
Sally, I am loving your books, thank you for such delightful work. Awesome research, and the narrator is also great! I love listening while I'm quilting.
You are so welcome! I've always thought it's easier to enjoy the things that I like, like crafting, or to get things done, like chores, with a good audiobook!
This is another wonderful novel. Thank you ! I really enjoyed the character of Sarah. A novel from the perspectives of the servants could be very interesting...
My mother has asked if I'll ever write a novel from the servants' perspective. There are writers who do that quite well, but I'm not interested in that yet. Because I'd rather not write a story about someone who has to do the laundry and the dusting while I'm also worried about doing my own laundry and dusting! LOL. :-)
I listened to this book for a second time. It was better the second time and there were details I noticed that I had missed the first time around. I also really liked the character of Sarah. She played such a pivotal role in the story, and her insights really helped Millie as she was making her choices for the future. I don’t know if you’re done with this series, but if it’s possible, if you do write additional stories, could you give us a little more of Sarah. Just a suggestion. Thank you for all your great stories.
Excited. I can hardly wait. I have already marked my calendar for the debut of Caroline‘s story. Thank you for your great stories and how they entertain and inform.
I have just finished the Inglewood series and am bereft at the loss of literary friends. 😊 You mentioned the "Return" series. Do you have plans of bringing it to youtube? I am going to be joyfully listening to the Clairvoir Castle books next. Thank you for sharing these treasures!
YES. Though the audio hasn't been started for it, so there will be a long delay between the ebook release and the audio, but it will definitely be posted on RU-vid!
I've been a lifelong student of various aspects of history. Everything from war to etiquette to fashion and medicinals. These are fabulous tales that (thank you very much) aren't "bodice busters". I love historical novels, but detest romance novels. Your work is historically accurate in things that matter and I've, for the first time in my life, truly enjoyed this type of work. It's engaging, socially proper, the dialogues (both spoken and inner) do not deviate from actual historically correct thought and action. To answer a question, yes, I fully believe that lord Neil is much more than anyone believes. I believe that he is both intelligent and wiley enough to have trained even his family to believe he's the epitome of the third son. (I can't say he's truly devious, simply clever and patient) However, he's not truly engaged in third son behavior. He plays the rake, but does not gamble, doesn't overly imbibe (if at all, I'm on my first listen and have been binging). He cares for his family but despises their actions. He's in fashion, but isn't being hounded by creditors. I even believe that his forwardness with a married woman had underlying intent. Either he's bolstering his questionable reputation, or more likely, testing the waters to see exactly what sort of people his neighbors truly were, as opposed to the den of vipers his own family is. Or I could be completely mistaken, lol. Either way, thank you!
I enjoyed reading this so much! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. And you're exactly right about several of my ideas while writing. He existed in something of an echo chamber with his family and the friends that came along with them. When your only examples of normalcy are so terribly wrong, deviating from the path they've taught you is difficult. When Neil can suddenly act without fear of retribution, think through things himself rather than fall into old habits, he has the opportunity to discover another path.
No donation necessary. 🥰 If you ever want to buy a book, audio, ebook, or paperback, that is always helpful. But zero pressure to do so. Listening helps. Telling your friends to give my books a try helps. 🥰 Leaving a review here or on a site like GoodReads or BookBub helps!
@@AuthorSallyBritton Hi Sally: LOL...No offense intended. I got irritated with Milicent, because she kept giving in to Olivia. I can't and don't suffer bullies; and have always stood up to them with a victorious outcome on my end. So I kind of got carried away, wanting Milicent to call Olivia's bluff. I will go back and amend my comment. You can't stay mad at her at the end. Thank you again for an excellent story!👏👍😊
Glad to hear it. Half way through and I am unhappy with Millie. Her reasons for deceiving a good man are shallow, even if she reaches her goal there is no guarantee Olivia will keep up her end of the bargain and a quarter of the way in I was shouting at the book "Oh for heavens sake! If your conversation with Isaac is so frank, just ask him already why he and Olivia are on the outs!" Meanwhile there are reems of her internal speculation, worry and flip flopping about. She lacks bravery and intelligence and we spend half the book unable to cheer her on because her goals include deceiving our hero and social climbing ambitions to marry above him. I'm waiting for her to be redeemable. Heading into the bonfire scene. We'll see.. She's the first heroine I don't like. The rest in the other stories are lovely. :) I assume a turn about for Millie is forthcoming. It would be nice if more adult books wrote heroines like YA i.e. The Hunger Games. We don't get stuck in her head whilst she goes in circles. We learn her by her actions and words. Men call Millie out again and again both Olivia's brother and Isaac. It's impossible to see this woman as anything but unworthy and shallow. Edit: half an hour left and I kind of hate her. She's still crying in fear and cruelly tormenting Isaac. And after declaring victory through sacrifice, she doesn't even verify her win with Olivia to ensure the pay off. 🤦 This is a big mess. There isn't enough time left in the story for her to suffer enough in penance to redeem herself.
@@abell509 How very sad. I suppose, as the author, I know a great deal more about Millie than even what readers see. I also find most readers dislike it when it's the heroine undergoing the majority of the growth and change in a book.
This series, that's totally true! I love the sea. And Inglewood, the main estate in the story, is based on a castle that is on the shores of the Black Sea.
The research indeed is commendable. The characters and the story lines are wonderful in all your books. I'm really fond of your books, you did a marvelous job capturing attention and keeping attention throughout the entire book, however if I may, from all the history I've been exposed to, during that time women died from pregnancies and/or lost their babies quite a bit. It was a real and valid danger back then. The way sometimes you have your characters act with quotes I'm pregnant I'm not an invalid is very not believable to me. I hope you don't take my opinion in a bad way, I mean no offense, I really do like your books.
Reading journals written at the time, women weren't always worried. Nor did they die as often as films and books would have us think, though there certainly was a higher mortality rate than now. Just as today, we have women who never experience morning sickness and those who do (I did with 3 of my 4 pregnancies), the experience was very unique to the individual. I do have characters who are more delicate than others, but some are more robust and confident.
